I've been trying to specialize in LAVs this build, but I've found myself not using them much. Very early in this round someone had some good luck with putting 3 guys in an LAV with the squad leader in the passenger seat looking at the map. The squad leader could then mark waypoints on the map, and then the LAV could work as a small mobile gun platform. Apparently the vehicle assist points combined with attack orders gave a pretty good amount of skill points. Unfortunately this only seems to work when nobody on the other team has AV weapons. The LAVs are so paper thin that people only use them as taxis, and bail out asap so that they don't die. I often find myself taking a swarm launcher in ambush maps so I can pop up on a hill and kill LAVs from halfway across the map. All I have to do is lock on and fire a single volley, then run off to find a new target. They're basically a near effortless source of points.
First I tried fitting out a baloch with militia armor modules, but despite having mechanics IV at the time it still died to a single swarm hit. Then I tried putting about 100k worth of non-militia armor modules on, along with the strongest damage control available. That one died to a single grenade. After that I tried a methana, with a 60mm plate (the second strongest one), the best DC and two of the 18% armor hardeners. With mechanics IV even this vehicle died to a single grenade.
I now have a methana fit with two of the 25% hardeners, the best DC and the same second best 60mm plate. In theory it will survive a grenade, and possibly a militia swarm launcher hit. That's a lot of skill points invested to be able to survive one or two hits from weapons every day old newbie can use. This will only get worse when AV weapons are tweaked back up. We don't want LAVs to drive up to a group of enemies and just sit there brawling it out, but I think the passenger vulnerability already addresses this. If they weren't such a death trap we might see them being used for something other than disposable transport and running people over. I haven't tried the logistics LAVs yet, but I think I'll be unlocking those when the million SP from last weekend gets awarded.
Edit: A user in another thread mentioned that his shield tanking saga can survive a few hits, so this might just be a balance issue with the smaller armor modules. |

It's hard to say for certain, but with my most recent methana build I should have around 3500 armor on it if I remember correctly. This is assuming that the damage control doesn't receive stacking penalties, like in eve. The non-militia module baloch had around 1800 armor, and the earlier methana with the 18% armor resist mods should have had somewhere around 3000 armor. I'll see if I can do some more extensive testing of this over the weekend, now that I have enough isk to not worry about losing a dozen methanas. |

There's that too, but at least the tracking speed on large railguns is pretty slow now. Hitting a moving LAV with a large railgun is kind of hard, between the tracking speed and the charge up time. Large blasters are more of a threat, but they're also shorter range. |

I was just thinking that an option would be for swarms to have a lock on time that varies based on the signature radius of the target, like in eve. The only time I fail to kill an LAV is when it manages to break line of sight while I'm locking on. The larger the vehicle and the use of shields would make swarms lock on faster. You could also have a mid slock eccm module that increases lock time. |
