From the first time i played Dust, i noticed that something was off. something didn't feel right. It took me a while to figure it out, but today i realized what was wrong. The game doesn't feel like a war zone. It is just too quiet, you cant hear anything unless its within a few meters. So my suggestion is to increase the audible range of all sound effects, as well as making them sound more distant. Battlefield 3 does an excellent job at this.

That video is an excellent example of what a war zone would sound like. You can hear the sound of bullets flying by as well as distant gun fire. I personally think that hearing a guy open up with his HMG on the other side of the map would add a lot to the atmosphere of the game as well as being realistic. |

Though I would like that as well, it has to be further down on the list of fixes/must haves. |

As an audio tech I love to hear realistic sounds in my games because it breathes life into them however I disagree with it for this game. We are in fully enclosed and more than likely padded armor thts probably 1-2 inches thick. Any sound our clones would be hearing would actually have to be micced from the outside of the suit then replayed on speakers inside thus causing a loss in fidelity. |

thus, i agree with OP. plus, it's just kinda boring, audio-wise. sure, it is beta - there could be about a hundred different sound triggers missing. but, as it is currently, it's just way too quiet. music helps somewhat, but yes. not there yet, in terms of sound experience. |

I agree with op, I think it's low priority compared to bug fixes and new gear/features, but would be nice to have. |

+1 on this.
Sound isn't that hard to implement. It doesn't need to be explosions right beside you and all. But the feeling of being in a warzone must be amplified. |

just means more bandwidth, otherwise the tech is not so hard, heck they could have all sounds at the same level no matter where you were.... the dynamic reduction shouldn't chew resources...too much..., just run an algorithm to roll off high end first, then drop db's as things get further way.... but adding reverb or echo can get cpu/ram intensive.
so mostly.. its about net bandwidth because currently sounds could be throttled to decrease packets.

The PS3 is pretty ancient now, so I would much rather have a playable game, then a 15 FPS game for the sake of hearing a snipers taking a pot shot from the opposite side of the map.
I would love to have that indepth sound... but I honestly don't think the PS3 is capable of this, whilst having ground breaking gameplay. |

I've got to agree with the OP - this might not be the only factor that might improve the atmosphere, but sound is an often overlooked element. The difference in sound you might hear on a Dust battlefield compared to a contemporary one is also a great differentiator and needs developing.
I really don't see why this or a similar audio/atmosphere improvement would be particularly taxing on the hardware either. |

+1 from me.
One of the reasons I initially fell in love with battlefield was because of the amazing audio. It helps immerse the player in the game, especially during a really intense firefight.
But we also have to be realistic, like others have posted, audio only needs to be polished after other major issues are fixed AND if they still have the resources to pull it off. |
