I prefer the idea of orbital strikes being used to take out immobilized tanks (next build), installations, and other dug-in sorts of positions. Arbitrarily wiping out a bunch of infantry because your squad happened to get a certain number of WP doesn't sound like fun gameplay.
You make a great point. I +1'd OP, but you are right -- a balance needs to be struck. Perhaps not just automatically telegraphing it, but what about something like this:
Modules / Skills that allow for signal alarms and communication encryption. So, as a squad leader, you have an Electronics module that allows for encryption on communications, such as Orbital Strikes Requests, at different levels { Militia : Orbital Strike Request MACRO => no encryption Basic : Orbital Strike Request MACRO => basic encryption Enhanced : Orbital Strike Request MACRO => enhanced encryption Complex : Orbital Strike Request MACRO => complex encryption EvE Developed / Named / Not 'on the market' : Orbital Strike Request MACRO => R&D (EvE developed) encryption }
The levels of encryption would play a counter role in the infantry dropsuits & skills that allow you to detect Orbital Strike signals on various levels { 1: no encryption => 5 sec warning 2: basic encryption => 4 sec warning 3: enhanced encryption => 3 sec warning 4: complex encryption => 2 sec warning 5: R&D (EvE developed) encryption => 1 sec warning }
Any thoughts on something like this? |

Oh man, could you imagine how sweet it would be to look up and see actual sub-orbital combat taking place over head and then realize, it's really happening in EvE?!? |
