so I've decided to possibly take sniping and or assaulting for a primary gunning.
what are some thoughts on this from players who've tried one or the other..

Just kind of 'shopping' on were to spend my skill points. It all depends on your preferred play style. Do you like run-n-gun, taking the fight to the enemy? Or are you the patient type willing to spend time getting to the right place and waiting for your unsuspecting prey? Nice thing about Dust - you can specialize in assault, but still put some skill points into sniping. Then create a fitting with the assault suit and set it up with a sniper rifle (light weapon). Now you have two fittings for whatever the battlefield needs (or you feel) at the moment. |

Break out a militia sniper rifle and see if you like sniping. Also, you don't need to have a lot of skill points to do well at sniping. That's one of the nice things about it. It's very easy to get into, because you generally won't be getting hit yourself, so stuff like Mechanics/Shield Management become less important. Conversely, with assault you need to skill up both offense and defense and get grenades, a weapon like assault rifles, and other stuff going.
In short, sniping is easy and assault is hard. |

And by that he means sniping is more realistic and assault is just a bunch of running in and shooting each other which no one in their right mind would ever do in a real tactical situation.

Assault rifles are good but snipers dominate in my opinon. Not a lot of people use them right now but that'll probably change when the bugs are worked out. You can't beat one hit kills at all ranges in a game with so much shield and armor |

sniping sux.. unless you are a battle/counter sniper which I know of about 2 good ones.. all noobs are going sniper.. it just makes you part of their "camp", pun intended.. go assault.. it's more manly, you won't regret it.
also the tactical rifle if you can use it well makes you look like a pro and will impress those around you.. i dont recommend 3 round burst until they fix the F'ing frame rate freezes.. which there are many of right now with all the roleplayers chasing their million sp carrot..
assault bro, it's the all around thing that can get you more SP than some lame sniping from the mountains will and you'll feel like a chump crouching there when someone flanks you or drops a bunch of lasers from space on your head. i always target snipers with those. |

I am speccing as a sniper. Its the only decent thing to do with current KBM controls. Hit detection is a real pain and I don't think that the reticule lines up with the bullet very well, or theres a fraction of a degree of inaccuracy which really stinks when your target is a few pixels tall.
ARs are common but I don't like them. I haven't had much success with them but thats mainly because I need a mousepad the size of my living room to turn.
Now snipers have a bad name, mostly because they are killing a lot of AR infantry and they whine about it. Do you're team a favor and focus on killing other snipers first.
Edit:
Teabag up there is one of those sore people. But he does bring up a point. The SP you get from sniping is usually pretty poor unless you can break a 10-1. Sniping can get boring but you proved quite a bit of help despite what people say. I do wish that CCP would fix the hitbox for structures which makes protecting some null cannons at certain points impossible.
Double Edit:
Regarding what rugman said. Sniping isn't a garenteed one hit kill weapon. With an advanced sniper and Sniping/Weaponry to Lv5 w/ 2 weapons upgrades, It takes two body or more body shots for most non scouts. |

LOL..
I been killed by a sniper maybe 5 times in the last 100 hours of playing..
They suck because most of them get score of 2/9, they don't take objectives there's like 12 snipers every fkn game and a squad of 4 actually fighting for objectives. Yea they are all a buncha k/bm nerds.. go ahead keep sniping after we flank you for an easy kill we spawn a dropship at the end of the match and laugh as you go tumbling down the mountainside.
I'm not saying every sniper sux.. Idk if you do, never played in game with you.. but most do and a team of 12 snipers is a massive fail.. and every game for the last 2 weeks has been 4 ppl at the top of scoreboard with positve scores and the rest the "snipers" are at the bottom with 2/9... with the pilot at the very bottom at 0/0 of course. |

You definitely don't get as much of a reward for playing as a sniper. You will get half of the SP that other roles get. You don't die as often so the money is a bit better.
You will spend about the same amount in SP as you have other things you will want to upgrade like dropsuit command and sensors. |

Seriously, though, this game is great because you don't have to get stuck with one spec. With an assault suit you can spawn in with an AR to push and capture objectives, go counter-sniper to help clear a path, or (my favorite) drop in with an advanced swarm launcher to kill dropships and HAVs that are causing problems.
Choose the path that fits you the best. Simple stuff. |

I've found I can work with the best of both world when it comes to sniping and assault.
Currently I run a militia sniper and the toxin smg on a militia assault suit with all militia gear bar AV grenades and a nanohive. All of my points have gone to maxing out weapons, the smg op, sidearm stuffs, and just a teensy bit into sniper. So then I run with the smg out into objectives, and then when I see one or one is called out, I pull out the rifle and headshot whoever's sitting on the ridges in just a few seconds as they're all just sitting ducks. When that's done I whip out the smg and go back to work. Then I still have the AV genades for any AV needs.
The combo works great, and as soon as I max out sidearm range, I'll start working on mechanics and shields to get a bit more survivability. |

I use shotgun, smg, swarm, sniper, mass driver. All but smg use same support skills.
Only skill needed for sniper is sniper rifle lv1 to get charge sniper, rest can wait till you get assault skills up. The support skills for sniper are same as ar. Just have a fit with charge sniper and then skill for assault, pull out sniper fit as needed/wanted. |

If you want to be a sniping assault it's best to focus on tactical assault rifles, they have accuracy, they have range and they have damage. Keep the distance at semi-long (distance where normal assault rifle spread just screws up) and you'll be taking down normal assaults fairly well.
The weapon sucks on CQC tough, (assuming you are not reincarnation of Simo H+ñyh+ñ) so having an SMG with some skills to back it up helps a ton in when things get up close and personal. It's not completely bad in CQC tough, if you can hit with it it deals a fair bit of damage and the fire-rate depends on how fast you can tap the fire-button.
Tactical assault rifle is a snipers nightmare, it doesn't sway and it shoots where you are pointing it even while moving, making it easy to take down most snipers provided that you are within effective range (crosshair turns red). |

It seems that Dust will soon realize that versatility will beat specilization. Of course you have to specialize on certain paths, but in oppposition to EVE online where you are barely able to pull out 10 ships in one battle, it has to have Versatility in mind.. In Dust on the other hand you can even swap your fit with the appropiate station. So we will soon see: One Loadout Specialists(like tank-pilots), variable Loadout Switchers( like Logis switching between Uplink-Dropper and Repper- Fits) and the Swiss-Army-Knife Loadout that has longrange, shortrange and AV abilities (like the aforementioned Assaults or Scouts).
With enhanced faction and corp gameplay (and better working squads) there will also be Specialist Squads (like AV-Squads) which can be morphed to Assault Squads or Vehicle Squads (driver and gunners).
On rare occasions we will have sniper tag and bag teams which supply their own hives and uplinks or split up to cover a larger area in cooperative targeting. |

Personally i like to grab the scout-sniper dropsuit and bolt around the sides of the battles, get to the objectives behind enemy lines.. means an additional drop-point for us, and we can come in from 2 angles if so desired.
also, sneaking around the back and taking turret emplacements near the enemy MCC means you can turn around and start firing at it yourself too. might be less SP, but it can sometimes be the small things that help. |

Tebow id like to make a counter point here my friend,
Last time i went 2/9 i had just picked up my controller for the first time in a LONG while......
I do take objectives in the start of the match or when the opportunity presents its self, whats wrong with playing smart?
and flank me? ok, u take my flank, i realize, i RUN, GL hitting me, on the chance u do get me, congrats to you man! i mean a good sniper keeps his eyes open and calls out targets and other intel to the team, stay in ur scope=dead sniper
all in good fun man, ill be seeing u on the battle field! |

I have to roll my eyes whenever I get sniped. My fragile logi suit is a one shot kill to all but militia sniper rifles. It usually only happens if I'm doing something moronic like standing still. The snipers that land a hit while I'm moving erratically, mad props to ya.
That said, my dropship loves snipers. Never behind cover because they rely on range to keep them safe, so fragile that splash damage takes them out, and on some very happy days clustered up so they can all take advantage of the same sniper's nest. We once spotted a group of three of them laying all but on top of each other. One missile took out the whole group! |

i only snipe under certain circumstances. mainly on certain maps. it's best for ambush because it's all about attrition. easy way to deplete clone reserves with OHKs. it's a bit hard to hit moving targets because of the range. i'm pretty good at sniping on other games, but this takes some getting used to. the reticle is a bit sensitive to move making aiming a bit difficult. i do like the auto stabilizing though. since i have only level I sniper skill (i'm building assault rifle stuff up first) i know things will get easier later.
in the previous build i ran a class A assault suit with 3 complex damage modifiers, charge sniper rifle, and a drop uplink. i would like to get back to that fit. or even better, use one of those special sniper rifles from salvage. |
