Having just finished a match of skirmish, I hit square to return to Merc quarters. The game cut to black and locked up my machine completely. I had to remove the power cable to get it to shut down. Turning it back on gave me a warning about potentially corrupting my machine.
Sorry, but I'm not willing to risk my PS3 to test the game. When this is fixed, I'll be back. (Yeah, yeah. "Don't let the door hit you on the way out." etc. etc.) |

I've had freezes before, but only one that that didn't fix. And that was from the last build, but even then it didn't give me a corruption message.
I know betas are for finding bugs, but that one's too much. |

The freeze took place at the closing of the game, right when it should have transitioned to the loading screen for the Merc Quarters. My guess is that it might be saving your SP & ISK earnings and equipment losses at that time. Though whether that's to the machine or a server I'm not sure. |

My PS3 is the same model as you describe, Gestahl. Probably about a year old. Any other freezes can be handled that way, even others from Dust, but twice now it's been not enough.
Perhaps "damaging to the system" has the wrong connotations. I know it's very unlikely that software problem could result in a significant hardware problem, and it's not what I meant to suggest. Rather, system data corruption. Even if it's repairable, I don't want to risk having to do that. |

I wouldn't, but there was absolutely no other option. Holding the button down, even for extended periods, did NOT work. Normal freezes, yeah. These, no. And Slim models don't even have a power switch to resort to. EDIT: What Waruiko said.

So for the "data corruption" error, this isn't Dust which is causing the problem, but rather the PS3 being shut down uncleanly. And if you have a smaller hard drive / more full drive, there is a higher chance for corruption. And remember, just because it crashes, that doesn't mean that your PS3 will blow up and be the cause for world hunger. It just means that your hard drive may need a good fsck'ing, and worst case scenario, blown away and wiped. :)

Yes...Mhmm. Yeah. I know some of those words.
The look at the tech side of things is definitely useful, but as Dewie pointed out, Dust itself may not be capable of causing corruption, but it what causes unclean shutdowns. Bottom line, Dust hard freezes risk corrupting your hard drive. And while this may be repairable through some means, not everyone is capable of doing so, nor should they have to. That kind of bug should never have made it through even to the limited amount of public that's in the beta.
Again, I understand that betas are for finding bugs, and what I'm suggesting is that perhaps this game hasn't gotten enough to in pre-beta to account for its ambitious undertakings. If CCP needs more time to get things sorted before they give it to us, great. I'll wait. But I absolutely will not play a game that puts my machine at any sort of risk, hardware or software. I wouldn't accept it from any other title, and I won't here either. Not even in the beta.
Corban, I keep my PS3 vertical with a fan on it at all times. I lost a hard drive to overheating before, so I've taken especially close care not to let it happen again. Pretty confident it's not heat (though you should still definitely keep your machine as ventilated as possible, of course). |
