Also why spend $100+ for a free to play FPS like Dust?! Better save those money for the PS4 than spend them now on the PS3 for just few titles.
SSD (as DF says) "In the here and now, SSDs remain an expensive luxury, but they clearly represent the way forward for console technology - if not now, then definitely for next-gen machines."
Also you are judging the improvements on a partial/incomplete code which means that the results you are getting NOW definitely will not be the same you get in the final game. Not to mention that Dust 514 qualitative inferior to many FPS on PS3, both in therms of performance & video quality, so a SSD can make it run/look better because there's far less to do than on a title such as Killzone 3.
I'm not telling people they should go out and buy one. I merely had one, experimented, and reported my findings here. Some guy has a 250GB SSD in his PS3, others might be happy with a 30 GB drive. Some people even bought PS3s and/or Vita just for DUST. Price/performance values are not universal. |

Very true. Sense of value and affordability is subjective. I would certainly consider a small SSD to make my Dust experience smoother. |

The PS3 is supposed to be a SATA1 device. That means that even a 7200RPM drive is faster. The only time I think the SSD will win is if the game uses a very large number of very small files. Seek times would be lower.
Yup, for games like Gran Turismo 5, which installs thousands of little files, it can cut load times in half. There are several benchmarks online that show this. |

If you don't need a lot of space, you can get 30 GB for under $40 and 120 GB for under $100 depending on budget and needs.
As far as crashing goes, it has no effect on network stuff. Hard freezes that require a power pull and invalid bug are still present. I haven't seen any of the other issues though. The main effect is a much smoother game though. It is at the point where just showing my friend the difference made him go out and buy one same day. |

I haven't seen anyone mention in here yet about the drawback of the low GB HDD, there is a reason why sony no longer offers a 20gb HDD other than the cost.
This is just a rough guess from what I remember reading, but +players might know more about this as it hit them hard when they got the 6 games for free offer.
You need double the space in GB for the game file you are downloading and attempting to install. So if you got a 20gb or 30gb, the system takes some to run the os, your game saves and data utility files take more, so if the Download is 10gb's or larger you sometimes can't install it, same goes for if you have an almost full HDD. |

I just recently put a 500GB Toshiba 5400rpm SATA 2.5" hard drive into my PS3. I would have gone for the 7200rpm, but for reasons which I can't explain when I play the PS3 for around 6-7 hours with the 5400rpm the heat-sink trips and immediately the safety feature turns the console off as it's too hot. This causes the PS3 to go through a 15minute system recovery scan every time that happens.
It's really down to how people think warranting a broken console is to the benefits of a faster drive.
I personally think it's due to the location of my room in the house, because it's like a sauna in here. Unfortunately for me Sony haven't made any fans for the slim, they're all third-party which I don't really trust.

You are correct. You cannot download a game that is 10GB if you have exactly 10GB free space on your hard drive. |

I'm planning to get a hybrid magnetic+SSD drive. They have performance almost as good as an SSD and are cheaper.
Most articles online about using an SSD or hybrid in a PS3 only cover disc-based games, and even then, some that have lots of files that get installed (Gran Turismo) or those than stream textures (Rage, Brink, probably DUST) have been shown to gain a benefit. I've seen videos of Rage where SSDs reduce texture pop-in quite a bit, and that's something I notice in DUST. They cut load-times in GT5 by 10-20+ seconds.
As I said earlier, for a game that's entirely hard-drive based, you'll probably see a significant boost, especially with lots of files, like DUST seems to have. |

Not really. Maybe you'd load into battle a second before others. It'd mostly be about less texture pop-in and just more responsive menus. |

As PS3 loads the low resolution textures first you will notice a significant speed increase for textures getting "sharper". Anyway only question I have with SSD drives is trimming how is this handled on PS3 ?
Edit: OK seems that according to wiki new drives can trim them selves also read this about performance issues when you consider SSD drive. Thb. honest just updating your current hard drive with a new model that has several gigabytes of access storage or SSD hybrid drive would benefit your PS3 as much as SSD because of the hardware limitations. |

got a 500GB HDD on my fat PS3. And i got like 50GB left on it you can imagine that i wont pay around 500 bucks just to get a new HDD for my PS3. Im confident that CCP will fix most of the problems first before releasing the game. |

Stuffed my 300GB SSD drive (that I don't have other uses for atm lol why did I buy it?) and it's amazing how much sharper everything in the game is now.
Pretty much perfect resolution / LOD through the whole game, and menu's etc are much more responsive. Highly recommended upgrade if you're not poor. |

Just installed my A-data SSD drive 2 days back. I didnt measure it, but load times feel about 20%faster. Textures loading and menu response has been improved as well. As long as no Trim issues surface this should be a good investment for Dust. Cheers. |
