LAVs and dropships are supposed to be troop transports but on the fairly small maps we have now loading up, driving over, and unloading take nearly as long as simply hoofing it. I suspect we're eventually going to see very large maps, and on those maps effective use of LAVs as scouts, skirmishers, and early cap point...taker...guys...whatever will be important. We'll also see dropships used for their intended role of ferrying troops to battle, rather than as mobile spawn points with guns.
On the other hand, the LAV's purpose is not troop transport, rather it is a mobile fast moving light weapons platform. It just does that job very poorly. Larger maps may well make it better though. If the gunner was enclosed, I think it would be able to perform its role much better. |

Makes sense, but honestly, has CCP said just how big maps are going to be? I'm honestly not sure they're going to be massive enough to justify DS's actually operating as "Dropships." LAVs are efficient transports right now, but honestly, I don't think anyone's going to want to spend the SP or cash just being a taxi. A battle taxi, sure, but right now it's just too hard for gunners to get kills, and thus drivers assists.
CCP has stated that the maps will be 5km x 5km

I disagree, it's hard enough to drive the LAV as it is without making me try to shoot people as well. A driver controlled gun only works on the HAV because driving it is relatively slow and easy and would be boring to drive without being able to shoot. |
