Hey everyone,
I jumped into the beta yesterday as a PS+ member. I was very very excited to try this game out. I've been waiting for a good while to try it. And now that I've played it for about 24 hours, I'm about ready to delete it from my HD and not look back. Why, you might ask? I have zero idea of what's going on. Whereas it appears everyone else around me knows exactly what they're doing.
I haven't been in a game yet where anyone runs in squads. I was of the impression that this game is designed to favor squad-based play. Instead, it seems like everyone takes assault and treats this game like every other FPS out there, running around and jumping. When I try to snipe, I'm killed with one shot from an assault player. When I play a medic, I can't get to any wounded players (and I don't know how to use the freaking injection, either LOL). Am I missing something?
Secondly, I came up with a great loadout for my heavy (what I specialized in) and yet it says "invalid" when I try to use the character. Why is that happening?
Any advice would be great. I know the Dust community has a reputation for being very friendly. This is not one of those cases where i know I'll improve by losing. It's not possible to improve when you're killed immediately after spawning. I'd really like some detailed explanation of how loadouts and skills work. Or what I should and shouldn't buy early on. If I should respec or something. There seems to be zero mentoring in this game in any capacity. I don't know what goes where or what I should spend money on or anything like that.
One more question -- does voice chat work? Or is that one of the bugs they're working out?
Again, I'd appreciate the help. |

Hello, when a class says invalid it means your out of items. You have to constantly buy new guns equipment unless there militia stuff, aka noob stuff. Why do you think you earn like 50,0000 isk a match to buy new equipment..! Also, try to read the tutorials in the neocom. I haven't tried voice chat even though I have mic I believe you have to press a button first. |

Ah! I had no idea I had to keep replacing my stuff! That makes sense now! I'll explore that more.
And yes, I've tried pushing the button for voice chat. I know a majority of PS3 players don't have or use mics, and that seems completely counter to the concept of a squad based game. How the heck do you formulate tactics without speaking to one another?
The neocom hasn't really helped me, nor has the sticky above. I mean I understand most of it, I just can't figure out how to put it to use. |

Voice comms are off by default. You will need to enable it in the options.
Also, if all of your fittings suddenly go invalid, you've encountered the bug mentioned above and will need to restart your client. |

https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=20621&find=unread This post will help you understand the basics of the game. You can skip down past the EVE lore if you wish and rather just read about gameplat and DUST mechanics. As for squads, the game is still trying to smooth out a lot of the team mechanics, so if you can you will want to make your own squad (press select while in mech quarters and then select the sergeant cheverons for the squad section) and play with people you know or like. I am sorry you did not have a good first impression, the game has a learnimg cliff, but maybe you will grown to like it more once you have a better idea of how the game world works. Hope to see you plandt side and God Speed. |

1. Find a squad chat it up in local and X up with a group 2. Voice is default to push to talk its recommend you turn this option off, you have free voice in squad and free voice on battlefield. 3. Sometimes there is a bug where all fits go invalid and requires reconnect to fix its being worked on after all its beta. Secondly as others have said you have to prestock your fittings and prepare for hte number of times you expect to die, you should stay away from expensive gear until you have a better idea how to fit put things together and decide wha tyou want to skill up.
Skills are pernament progression you carefully tailor this out to increase traits that will benifit your idea of a 'perfect' soldier. May he me a sniper or an unstoppable collosus. Use Tirangle on skills you find on the all skillbook page to see what each skill has to offer. Some offer bonuses, while others offer unlocks. Some skills are tiered in and require lesser skills to be trained befor eyou can use them such as shields require you know a bit about your engineering.
As for your first days check the market for milita gear buy alot of different kinds to put together random things see what works and what doesnt, try to theme too, a fit trying to do everythign at once will not work as well. Once you find a fit you think you can survive on and get better with look at the miltary grade gear and upgrade your skills to accomidate and buy those modules.

Howdy Crit,
This game has a learning curve for an FPS. It's not as bad as the learning cliff for EVE, but you'll figure it out. Hang in there, read up on the basics of game with the onlilne manual that's stickied, it's not very descriptive but it gives you an idea of whats what.
This game does favor squad based play, you are not wrong in that assumption. Most of the squad combat involves already formed corps. atm. Every once in awhile I see a foursome of randoms together. Other than that is it as you see it, a bunch of lone wolves running around.
This game has huge potential, don't give up on it just yet, keep pluggin away at skills and make sure to read them before you buy. Planning ahead is key to maximizing your early build. Make sure to use your skill booster in order to speed your leveling.

Check out the local chat to see if people want to squad if you don't have friends who are playing, I see people asking to squad up in there every now and then.
To work the nanite injector, you have to equip it using the R2 wheel (or tapping it until it cycles to it), then you have to locate where the person died and a prompt will pop up to press R1 to revive them. It's usually where the call-out icon is, not where the body is, though sometimes it's not. It's weird, it's where they died so if you didn't see them go down and their body slid down a hill or something, the icon is the best bet to look for. I'm hoping they fix that, because it's a lot of moving around the area spamming R1 right now. |

I suggest using a Search for your answers, there's also an untroduction thread in General Discussions near the top which will help. Also, I recommend using the Local chat (accessed by pressing Select in MQ) and talking to other players with mics to get into Squads. The game is unforgiving, but try using the basic Assault fit for a while until you get hang of things, then move on to creating your own custom dropsuits. Any other specific questions? |

They haven't done any tutorials that actually show players what is happening and the beta doesn't have much of a practice area. Hopefully full release will be much more user friendly. But for now it takes some reading.
Take a look at the guide that is stickied in this forum. And read all the stickied topics for new beta testers.
And just mess around with whatever. The game is much closer to a game than it was, but it is still not a complete enough game package. To do more than try out different things.
But basically to use anything you need to train the skills that allow you to use an item. Each item will list the requirements. Then you have to buy enough items to use every time you die.
Except militia gear. That you will not lose. My best advice would be to try out militia gear and see what combinations you like. If the suit can't support the amount of gear you are trying to load onto it, you can also get an invalid fitting.
But yeah, up until a few days ago I had never figured out how the star map even worked. People kept saying how you could zoom in and see planets but I never could. Then I somehow realized you had to select an area to zoom to, zoom in, select again, zoom in, and that would get you there. Learn something new every day...

Dig deep through these forums. The game is pretty unfriendly to new players, even if they understand the mechanics. It is definitely a "pay your dues" kind of game, where low level players don't stand much of a chance vs. high lvl.
Specialization is key in the long run, but when you're just starting out I'd recommend making a variety of militia fittings so you can try out the various weapons and equipment. Except for vehicles, Militia gear doesn't need to be restocked, so you can save up some ISK for skillbooks and better gear down the line.
I also recommend training up passive skills. "Weaponry" is a cheap and useful one to max out early on, as it increases the all around damage you do. Other skills are necessary for unlocking more advanced gear, but the passive stuff will improve your character for all loadouts.
Personally, I'm waiting until I have my Scout's survivability up to snuff before I even bother taking out non militia gear.

You might be getting invalid not just because of running out of weapons, but you went over your CPU. I tried to add double shield extenders and it went over my CPU which was like 186/180 so I had to unequip it and replace it with something else. You can see your CPU usage at the top right corner in the dropsuit setting section. (Where you equip stuff) |

You probably know most of this by now but for other folks that may read this thread...
Tips for fitting your first drop suit -- which might be more to your play style.
After a few games to build up some ISK, in the Merc Quarters, in the NeoCom go to the Market.
In the Market go to Militia gear. Except for the bug, if you only use militia gear the fitting will never be invalid.
With the exception of vehicles, all the Militia gear is free and requires no skills to use. BUT in order to use it in a new fitting you have to buy ONE of the item. Don't buy more -- you just need the one for it to show up in the drop suit fitting options.
After you've looked at all the stuff and decided how you want to spend your ISK (Be sure you buy one of the drop suit type(s) you want to use) buy one of each thing.
Now back out and go to Fitting. In fitting you should see the starter fittings and a "New Fitting" button. In that screen you should see one of each of the new suits you bought. Pick the one you want and start building the suit you like. Be sure you pick a suit you bought. If you pick one of the starter suits they come pre-loaded and you can't start fro scratch.
Note that every fitting has to have a weapon so when you first open the fitting you get a big "Invalid" message. It goes away when you fit a weapon.
To fit an item in a slot you highlight a slot with the joystick and then press X to select it. A list of available items pops up and you can select the one you want. For each thing you select you cut into your budget for power grid and CPU. In the low slots (on the right) you can use PG and CPU upgrades to buy you a bit of each at the price of a slot.
With your own fitting you can do something like a heavy sniper or a scout with an assault rifle. You can shield or armour tank. It might make you play a bit more fun. |

Goals: ambush Kill em bubba, kill em good ! Skirmish Capture their objects (A B C D and E) and drive them before you and hear the lamentation of their KD/R
Fitting: Don't go over CPU or Grid and buy stuff when you die. Skills: Buy a skill book with isk and inject, only ONCE mind you.
And that's it the rest is basic shooter stuff.
