Shields are a joke in every game that has implemented them, all the way back to counter-strike 1.6
If you want to be "tankish" then use heavy. What I think you want here is a way to absorb infinite damage and be a major annoyance to enemies, and to some extent teammates when you have no damage output potential.
It would be a serious mistake to put a shield in this game. Heavy armor and a logi friend are all you need. |

Jarre Jardox wrote:I think the idea of a giant shield has potential but not as a storm shield like swat teams use. Now some sort of equipment shield emitter that u can drop on the ground like an uplink or hive might be a cool idea. It wouldn't work while ur holding it but u drop it on the ground and a couple seconds later ba'zing u got a tactical sheild barrier (thts a nice name too and I could get used to calling them tsbs) and of course u would be able to shoot through them but enemies couldnt and maybe the HP of a heavy suit but strictly sheilds no armor. Thoughts? Wow this idea just keeps getting worse and worse..
Instead of dolphin diving, we have everyone throwing out their one-way barriers every time they see someone..
Inside of a tank is the only place you can shoot from without being directly shot back at. That's how it needs to stay honestly. |

Please tell me what you want this shield to accomplish that heavy armor does not.
You agree it needs to be able to be destroyed so that makes it potentially worse than heavy armor because heavy armor can be repaired.
It will use up a weapon slot if it is a shield you carry, and an equipment slot if it is deployable. Heavy wins again.
It will have to encumber you if it allows for use while mobile, because people already complain about scouts, I can only imagine the tears a shield would produce. They would have to be encumbered by it for balance so once again, no point over heavy.
Even the games where shields have been used, every "class" has the same amount of damage absorption. This game has the heavy already to fill that role, so with all of the balance factors and the existence of the heavy class, please tell me what you expect this shield to do, that is not imbalancing or cheap/annoying, that the heavy suit does not already accomplish. |
