TLDR at bottom:
at the moment there are several skills that have no use but to get the next upgrade of a particular gear they give no bonuses to using the gear and the gear has no bonuses depending on what level you are in the skill, i think this is a terrible idea.
For example say I like using LAV's there cheap quick and easy to use, the skills to pilot the basic LAV is just LAV lvl1 and vehicle command lvl 1 and from there on i can use basic LAV no problems (obviously need the module skills etc but ignore that for now), there is now no motive or reward for advancing the skills any higher it is totally pointless other then to get a logistic LAV which i do not want.
In EVE (i know these games aren't supposed to be the exact same but somethings i believe should be similar) as i was saying in EVE i can train the basic skill in say minmitar battleship and be able to fly the typhoon ( a great versatile battleship) now i have the choice i can invest in the battleship skill some more to get more advance battleships or i can just increase the skill to get more out of my basic battleship. this gives a player a chance to invest and improve is basic battleship ok it might not ever be as good as the top end battleships but if the player invests he is rewarded so a pilot who specializes in his typhoon is better then someone who just trying the ship out on basic level and i think this how it should be in DUST.
A player who invests time and skill points in to his LAV training should be better at using it then a person who has level 1 in this skills just so he can call down one when he needs to move quickly.
Does anyone agree with this??
this bonus to training the skill to higher levels can be done two ways one is that for every level of the skill the skill gives a bonus to vehicle usage (even if it just a boost to cpu or powergrid) or the vehicles and dropsuits have a bonus themselves dependent on the skill level (eve ships all have a bonus based on the ship skill for example a battleship might have a 5% bonus to damage per battleship level with large guns)
one more thing i want to add i can see why they might not of included such skill bonuses and that is to do with the skill spikes and clusters, as when they become available you will be able to buy the skills to pilot vehicles and you wont get any bonuses so it isnt pay to win as your not buying bonuses just buying access to equipment sooner. this does make sense i would hate to work to get lvl 5 in LAVs to get the nice bonus to my car and then have someone just buy the bonus with no work but a simple way around this would be skill spikes and clusters disable the bonuses for the levels in the skill.
this way a pilot who wants to pay to get his marauder quicker using skill clusters and aur so he can invest skill points on the equipment can while another player has the option to work towards it and is rewarded for this hard work in the long run, thus balancing the field between those who pay and those who dont.
TLDR- all gear skills that currently only unlock gear and vehicles should be given bonuses (i.e. 5% powergrid to HAV per level) or bonuses on gear it self based on level of skill (i.e. HAV info - 5% powergrid per level of HAV skill) or both and this is done to reward players investing in the skill,
skill spikes and clusters can disable this bonus if the used to give players quick access to advance gear (example buying a cluster that gives player HAV level5 5) they can use vehicle quickly but loose the bonuses so there is no pay to win involved.

Nice post, sorry mine will be short. But remember this is Beta. So far they have stuck to everything of how EVE is.
In the Beta Manual it even explains that different vehicles, suits, etc. will have different bonus's to them. These bonus's are just not implemented yet. As is75% of what will be in Dust, is not in Dust yet.
I dont doubt that you'll see vehicles/jump suits exactly how EVE ships are, and thats where those skills that do nothing atm but get you into higher tier vehicles/ jump suits will infact get boosts from those vehicles/suits depending on your level of skill. Just like in EVE. |

I kinda just skimmed the post, but I'm pretty sure they've said in the future there shouldn't be any dead levels of skills like we have now. So, you'll either be unlocking new items or gaining passive bonuses (or both?), they just haven't implemented all of those yet. |

i think people die too fast in this game, so i think the skills for specific suits should increase both armor and shield by a percentage for that specific suit type with each rank |

I agree with your post and the part on buying AUR is particularly interesting since as it is now he who has the deepest pockets wins, the rest of us just hope those deep pockets are incompetent. hopefully when the full game is released sp won't be part of the AUR market...it ruins the game may aswell sell god suits, Thor's hammer and Zues's lightning bolt with the sp as a package deal |

I am looking forward to the bonuses on dropsuits and vehicles, they are in some previews of game so only matter of time.
The skill booster are only aur item worth buying, tried some with merc pack aur, nothing I would spent real money on. The player market will have people selling aurum items for isk, like a in game ebay. The skilled players will be the ones that have the extra isk to buy the aurum items for isk. should work fine. |

I agree. I wrote about this too to CCP for the Beta feedback. Right now a lot of skills have this "Half investment" feel to them as you get nothing for that level... Or the next... But at level four you will unlock somethingpàápàá I think that this may change as more gear is introduced and the Beta goes on a little longer, but I still think it needs addressing. |

I agree with this and many others too. My thread about this. Tho its allready short version it allso suggest that items unlocked be spread better through skill progression too. |
