Thinking of buying a PC to play eve on, so looking for the optimum specs, but I tell you what, I am so out of date with PC specs having been a mac owner for a number of years its now all dutch to me.

And to make things really complicated, I want to use my 24" 7.1 iMac as a monitor for my new PC (dont have the space for a new PC on its own and dont want to ditch the mac as it has lots of work stuff on it.)

So... where do I even bloody start!

no, I can't, my 7.1 iMac is no where near the spec to play Eve as its about 4 years old now.

To buy a mac with enough grunt to play eve on minimum spec I'm looking at an outlay of -ú800.

For recommended or higher looking at -ú2000

Also, want a windows PC for other games and something thats upgradable.

With regards to the GPU issue for Imac you should try a google search to see if it can be replaced and to what spec you can go. A new GPU and extra ram would be cheaper but if you want a new PC for other uses aswell then check the specs for games you want to play and maybe get a local PC store to build it for you.

 For give an idea;

I'm running EVE Online in a PC with windows 7 professional; the technical aspects of my PC are as a follow:

 - Intel Pentium G620 2.6GHz Socket 1155 3MB L3 Cache
 - Gigabyte HA65M-UD3H-B3 Motherboard (Rev 1.0) - SKT-1155
 - G Skill Ripjaws F3-10666CL9D-8GBRL 8GB DDR3 (1333MHz,Cas 9)

As you noticed I am not using a dedicated video graphic card; I am using the Intel HD graphics with the minimum requirements in EVE and is working without problems; the only "problem" (which is not really a problem) is that I'm not enjoying the graphics of the game. I know that in PC with an Intel i5, say 4GB RAM as a minimum and a dedicated video graphic card, I am sure EVE Online will run smoothly.

So if you live in the UK probably you will consider visit a couple Tech forums before invest some money in your pc (for example Overclockers) and check prices with Amazon, eBay, eBuyer and the Overclockers itself. There are tons of online and retail stores this days; so good luck.

Further to GM Kiriap's suggestion, if you are in the UK, then check out Micro Direct, they're based near me in Manchester and they're good for prices, stock and even warranty returns when I've had stuff fail within warranty.

Edited : They are online mail order, I forgot to mention.

Ah, fair enough. Good luck with your quest and remember to check local PC stores and ask them for component lists, most should have these and then you can compare the prices for what you want in the PC and get it made in that shop. Or if you can build a PC or a friend can help/build it then get all the components at the cheapest price possible with no assembly charge, well maybe more than a few beers if a friend does it or helps.

You should be able to find decent pre-built ones on ebay like this. It should have what you need.

This site may help aswell Cameron for pricing.

 http://cdn1.eveonline.com/community/devblog/2011/eve-learning-curve.jpg

Turn off Captains Quarters ASAP. It's useless and is slow even on good systems. I'd recommend waiting to try EVE till after August 8th. A new patch is being released on the 8th that is supposed to make the terrible tutorials much better.

Captains quarters aren't really optimized well I don't think. My brother is using an i3 dual core 3.0Ghz (I believe) with a GTX 560 and 12GB RAM, the entire game runs smoothly at a constant 60FPS except the captains quarters - for whatever reason it still runs at 60FPS in there, but it puts his GPU usage up to 100%, which isn't really a good thing.

The great part about eve is that there is SO much to learn. As a former CEO and Alliance leader, I've seen hundreds of new people play eve and they often say that the combat is too basic. "You orbit, fire, and hope you win." Thats just what it looks like, but there are so many intricate details you need to find and exploit that gives eve so much depth.
