hi guys how you all doing. just wanted to talk about game sounds, what sounds you like and what sounds you don't like.
So, sounds in a fps game are a very important part of gameplay for feeling immersed, when you shoot a gun it should sound like it means business. when a grenade explodes it should sound like a explosion. basicly everything needs to sound like your on a battlefield, you need to hear people shooting in the distance explosions in the distance. i hate bringing up battlefield but just look how much detail they go into with just the sound in there game, as they know how important it is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRZZ0OC2PcQ
so i would like to see what sounds you guys like / dont like, ideas and improvemets to this.
My likes
*Dropships, i like this sound, it's uniqe and i can identify what it is purely from the sound, the sound works for a dropship sound to me.
*inertial dampner, i like this too as it gives a believable sound, i like the sound when you hit the ground.
* smg it sounds like a smg.
My dislikes
*grenade explosions, sounds weak , is there any echo from the explosion , i cant remember
*current ar, sounds a little dull and weak to me, needs to sound a little more violent as the chip chip noise doesnt really make me feel like wow im shooting a bad ass plasma rifle.
* battlefield just feels way to quiet needs more sound, need to hear explosions in the distance, wich sound muffled and different from an explosion up close , if they add jungle maps, weird animal life , more sounds for immersion the better.
for explosion improvents , if an explosion goes off near you and you dont die a ringing sound and all sound very muffled for a few seconds might help.
would really like to hear feedback from you guys please, likes/ dislikes ..ideas and improvements. thanks for your time |

Great thread idea.
Generally I think that:
a) The sound ambience should be somewhat dampened by my suit. Everything, explosions, ships, motors, guns, should sound like there's a noise-blocking wall or something GÇö well-dosed of course. This being said, breathing should be a tad louder.
b) Guns feel plastic and underpowered. I want to feel that shotgun boom in my gut. The forge gun should sound a lot more powerful. More gatling in the gatling gun.
I guess this will all be coming when polishing the game, but it doesn't hurt to just whip out some ideas right now... |

The swarm launcher missile hits are sooooo weak it sounds like a 3 year old slapping a piece of tin foil. Oh and after the initial launch sound the missiles are silent.... |

i agree the Swarm-Launcher sounds very quiet for a anti vehicle weapon, forge gun sounds good tho. |

I turned the music off and found it a bit disappointing that there are barely any environmental sounds to be heard.
In conjunction with the great ideas so far, it would be great that in the maps we have, audible sounds of thunder should be heard due to the lightning storm. Gusts of wind, similar to the sound of a sandstorm would be nice as well given how much dust is blowing across the field. Inside enclosed spaces, how about a reverb or echo effect for every sound effect?
How about the low hum of machinery or industrial lights? Chirps for computer terminals?
It is stuff like this which isn't an immediate concern, but would greatly enhance the experience. PS3s also support 7.1 channel surround sound, so utilizing that would be beneficial to enhancing the feeling of actually being immersed in the game. |

I remember seeing this in the E3 video they had where a rocket goes off next to the soldier and he gets blasted sideways a bit and his hearing gets muffled / ringing. It was awesome.
I would even present the idea of adding this muffled / ringing effect to voice coms. If a tank shell goes off next to your head then all sounds get muffled (including coms) and there is a ringing effect. |

I honestly think this game sounds pretty damn good. I have tritton ax pro's and don't remember hearing a game sound so good in a long time. Maybe playing things like MW3 before playing dust has made it sound so much better lol. EDIT: Footsteps I don't really remember noticing except when I just heard my own when running around in spawn. If I get chance to play it again I will test it out properly. |

plus, the explosions are delayed and you have no idea if you did any damage to the object! |

Yeah its amazing the amount of things you hear when you use a good set of headphones as opposed to sound from TV |

Contrary to a few things in this thread, I think that the suits would have microphones to pick up sound so that it won't sound muffled and they'd probably have a cutoff so that sound above a certain volume level would get turned down to avoid deafening people.
I mean, I have a set of earmuffs just like this that block loud sounds but amplify speech. Normally it's really hard to hear people talking to you while wearing earmuffs at a gun range or wherever you need hearing protection. |
