the biggest adjustment is going to be the massive gap between a new character and a skilled up character. i'm prepping you now, EVERYTHING will be overpowered your first weekend. please don't come here and scream about it. ARs are not overpowered, it's just that you'll be in militia suits being shot at by prototype ARs. you know?
as for more practical advice:
use your starting isk to buy up all the militia infantry gear in the market. it even has it's own category. you only need 1 of each since militia gear is infinite (the exception being the militia nanite injector, and the militia scrambler pistol. but these are bugged)
then proceed to make your own fittings. (the default fits range from bad, to broken) the militia gear requires no skill investment, so feel free to try as much wonky crap as you like. but i strongly suggest you do some basic fits like: an assault suit with an AR, a couple shield extenders in the high slots, and an armor repper in the low slot. then a militia smg as a sidearm and a nanohive if you can fit them. then make a similar fit swapping out the rifle for a militia swarm launcher. feel free to try the other suits, but assault will be closest to what you're used to in battlefield. try a scout if you wanna be weak, but fast. try a heavy if you wanna be an easy target, but strong. (unfortunately there are no militia equivalents of heavy weapons, so it's difficult to "test drive" them properly.) logi is "like an assault, but worse" in the current build, but the extra gear slots can give you some solid utility so long as you make intelligent use of them. (having a repair kit is useless if you never repair anything, you know?) and the logis bonus PG/CPU makes it easier for a newbie to fit stuff
so far as spending skillpoints, skills like mechanics, shield operation, shield management, weaponry, electronics, and engineering are always good decisions. they are general purpose skills that will buff you up no matter what you decide to use.
then once you've found a setup you like, look up the better versions of it, and the modules/weapons you like on it in the market. the pre-req tab will show you how you need to train to use that upgraded gear.
oh, and go into your options menu and turn on voice chat... |

mini rehak wrote:WOW thanks for all the advise, iv'e seen some videos describing the customization and i was just lost can anyone explain it and is their bullet drop in Dust. Because i play BF3 i'm used to aiming above long targets with guns and tanks and was wondering if they put that mechanic in here.
on most weapons there is not (i don't snipe so i have no ******* clue there, and mass drivers have an arc of course)
there is a bit of deviation and kick, but compared to battlefield it's very light. the real issue will be range. guns in dust have HARD caps on range. after so-ever much distance your bullet will hit an invisible wall and go no further. this range varies by weapon type, and can be buffed with skills, but it's definitely jarring at first. especially with an smg...
edit: as for fitting: different dropsuits will have different slot layouts, and different powergrid and cpu pools. you plug modules into those slots, one module for one slot. different types of slots can take different types of modules, but ALL modules "share" the PG/CPU pool, so putting a badass gun on a suit might eat up so much PG/CPU that you can only fit weak-sauce shields or armor. there are some modules that increase the suits PG or CPU, but then you're "wasting" the slot.
electronics will increase your suits CPU pool, and engineering will increase the PG pool, so they are good skills to squeeze a bit more out of cheaper suits. there are also "upgrade" skills that will REDUCE the CPU/PG need for certain types of module or weapons. but they are so specialized that you're much better off going into electronics or engineering first. |

However if you do decide to go heavy and you get to the top of your skill points its a blast, everything finally equals out but can be quite expensive.
well i like using big guns so can i use light or medium armor with a big gun and with big guns is it like TF2 where you have to rev the gun and basically stand still to fire?
HMGs like the heavy in tf2, require a heavy weapons module slot. as of right now, only heavy suits have those. the gun itself requires no spinup to FIRE, but it can only be hipfired, and is rather inaccurate when you begin firing. the spread will tighten as you sustain fire, but you need to balance that against the gun overheating. the weapons inaccuracy combined with the heavy suits low mobility means that they are incredibly weak at long range, and the enemy can easily KEEP you at long range.
they USED to be legitimately powerful within tight quarters. near objectives and the like. but they were severely over-nerfed in this latest build. so i advise you against them for now. |

PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE is screwing with you. a nanohive will restore your ammo. any suit but the heavy can carry them so long as you have enough pg/cpu. you could even ask a teammate if they have one. people will be happy to hook you up as they get points for it. |

mini rehak wrote: does this game have teamspeak or you just talk to specific people like in a squad
it has team wide voice chat, but you need to "opt in" under the options menu.
it's also occasionally buggy. sometimes you'll be on the other teams comms or stuff like that. |

Current cap is 12 vs 12 with current maps they had gone up to higher in the past (I think 16 vs 16) and they said they can go 256 vs 256 on thier inside builds but you have to start designing.
I find drop ship piloting perfect, LAV and HAV driving a bit wonky and gun play beset by aim assist and hit detection glitches. wow 256 v 256 would be EPIC, now one more thing needs clarifying with the mercenaries pack, is that just access too all beta events or constant beta access (like playing without a specific beta event)
merc pack is full access, but the beta is still offline a few days a week for everyone. no matter how you got in. |
