You know all those red zones around our designated battle confinement? Well I took an interest in them. I decided to explore as much of them as possible within my 20 second death timer (unsafe countdown).
For this I worked on my LAV driving skills and also my dropship speedy navigation. Training for a race is quite different to training to dodge missiles I'll tell you... So I did all this and went out exploring 20 seconds at a time. What I found was beautiful.
There are basically 2 main areas I took interest in. The first, which I explored by LAV was the road we all presumably drive in on as attackers before the fight starts. I think I was able to drive almost to it's beginning and the area was just breathtaking. Like a deserted dessert road in the middle of nowhere. Beautiful. The second area I was intent on exploring was the one that lays beyond where the MCC docs at the end of the match. This, in turn, broke up into two interest points for me. The first were the buildings the MCC theoretically docks with (even though it basically just parks overhead). I ran around them a few times both on foot and by LAV but couldn't find any entrances. They do seem quite impressive though. I would really love to explore them further. And then there was a complex most of you may not even be aware of. Going straight east and a slight bit to the north of the first buildings there is a complex which seems to be either an orbital gun or a space elevator for mined minerals. As this is really at the end of the 20 second timer even at full speed with a dropship, it's quite hard to get a good look at but it's also quite nice.
I can't wait to be able to explore those areas. Really beautiful and interesting. Maybe there's a skill I can train to add time to those 20 seconds.
My next exploration is going to be the large canyon to the south-east of the battle area. This will have to be explored by dropship (a shame as I really do like actually touching the landscape). I hope it'll also be as impressive as the previous 2.
Am I the only crazy merc out there or have others also tried exploring? |

Nice to see someone taking the initiative and exploring the map. I was also exploring the Communications map in Ambush and I was stunned by the beautiful landmark in the distance about NorthWest of the current structure that everyone else is fighting in. I feel encouraged now to explore the map.

Yes there is. Google Docs. Upload it as a PDF and you can set permissions for specific emails that can only be posted here in the forums. Others have tried it.
But just to be sure, ask CCP. |

And one person who tried it got questioned on the NDA points, took them down pending confirmation from CCP, then had his thread locked with no message explaining why. |

Google Docs. Read the User Agreement. Every content you upload to Google Drive grants Google permission to redistribute copy and overall you basically give them your copyright. So no. Google is not an option either.
BTW, don't worry. We will be playing on the whole map sooner or later. The red area is just temporary. |

Oh well. Like I said earlier: ask CCP about it. |

Wow, Grit, you are like the Christopher Columbus of Dust! I am intigued now. How close to that huge stucture to the NW of plateau have you gotten? It might be a shake to the northwest, but it is a towering stucture. Have you gotten there? |

Actually, I'm curious about a related topic: the 'sandtable' in the merc war room. This appears to show the MCC, what I take to be two defensive structures (earlier objectives I believe, judging from early Dust videos, although that could be from another location) and the structures around the MCC's objective.
On looking again however, there are only two towers on the table, not six, and the layout doesn't look right. What's going on here? Are there any signs of these defensive structures on the 'rocky' road Grit? Is it just a placeholder? Can anyone shed any light? |

That's the sandtable from the previous build where we had skirmish mode in the Communications map. A lot of what is now red in the Communications Ambush map were where we played. |

@SoLJae I actually got right to it but I'm afraid I only had about 3 seconds of time left to explore it before meeting my maker. Getting there was the easy part. I just took a dropship really high (about 20-30 meters over the MCC and then made a dash for it.
Edit: Sorry, I thought you meant the complext to the east. I've been playing for too long today...not thinking straight. I don't think you can actually get to the NW structure. It's off map. Like a dynamic background. |

Also, a new travel log! I got myself a dropship and went exploring the huge canyon to the SE of our current battle in Plateaue. From the map view it looks very dull but up close it's anything but! Quite an amazing piece of landscape I must say. It's far from the flat land it appears to be. Lots of nucks and crannies to fight in. Could be a staging area for some find infantry battles ala WW1/2. Even some trench wars if anyone would like to try. Going straight SE there is a huge wall of earth which I can't get to within the 20 second counter. Maybe once we can fit afterburners to dropships I can make it but not right now. That wall kinda reminds me of the giant red rock formation in Australia and it also appears to have lightning strikes on it. But that could just be a rendering mis-effect.
Next I'll go have a look at the valley to the NW of the current battleground. There's also a 6th tower there which we can't get to right now.
I also had another try at getting into the buildings the MCC docks with. Had a run aroudn them again with an LAV and even found something that looked like it could be an open door. It's on the north side of the northern building. I'm afraid I ran out of time before I could actually get a good look. Will try again. |
