I live in Australia, and I'm on wireless, so I get frequent short dropouts from the network.
PLEASE add a RECONNECT TO GAME IN PROGRESS DIALOG.
I don't want to let my team down by leaving and never returning.

Like this. A lot.
These matches are going to mean a lot when we've got corps and are laying it all on the line.
I think for team matches with a commander, your slot in the squad should be held for you automatically, and the commander can then release the slot if he/she so chooses.
For matches without a commander, it hink it makes sense to reserve your slot for as whatever PS3 boot time + Dust load time + 30 seconds, or something like that.
For pub matches no slot reservation at all, that's the way the cookie crumbles for a lo-grade merc =P |

Those are good points. Lag is bad enough without being booted every second game, and your team shouldnt suffer for it either.

I agree and disagree, I would like to form groups within the corp that I can party with on a fixed basis so if I drop or one of the teammates a invite can be sent to them to re-enter the match. However if they are having major issues it might be better to take a break and find a new player to replace.
Though allowing anyone to send a invite and allow the other members to vote yes or no to adding another player. example would be a player drops and a vote to reopen the match pops up. everyone on the team can vote and majority vote wins. lets say they vote to not reopen the team, then anyone can invite a player say /invite "name here" command or something? then a vote pops up allowing all members of the team to vote yes or no and majority wins. |

Greetings,
Not to sound like a cad, but tough luck. Keep in mind that these games are "live" and, at least at present, very short lived. It sucks that you have trouble getting back in, but if you network is that bad, then it really is something you need to take care of. Or if it is on your ISP put pressure on them to fix their issue. CCP can and does peer with various providers where it makes sense, but it is a big world out there, they can't be every where.

No!!!!. Pop-Ups in any knid of near-real time activity are a really really really bad idea. All it is going to take is a pop-up within 10 seconds of someone getting popped for them to scream that they died because of the pop-up. Just No!

For short rounded games then I have to agree however I would like to see longer games that can be played maybe making that more PvE related? perhaps a open world area with objectives and would take a team of players 30 minutes to traverse and fight through? I enjoy PVP but sometimes I like to do other things and asking for a PVP of 30 minutes might not be fun after all if its a group that is owning it really isn't fun for either group if your getting creamed every 5 seconds you dont like it and want it to end, if your killing people every 5 seconds you might think great a bunch of noobs I want this to end so I can fight someone more my level.
That being said a PvE area with missions for each planet with thousands of planets we have truly lots of missions to undertake and if they are long haul missions you might want to have a certain party you group with. As for pop ups I agree thats a bad idea maybe a in game msg x has left the game to reopen press start and select yes. this way you can invite or vote at your convenience . |

Ok. This game is forbidden to me because I live in the third world country of Australia. For the despicable crime of living in this backwater hellhole, I should be banned from playing Dust 514 to prevent me from causing any difficulties to the Americans.
Unless of course I use my space magic to make Australian ISPs decent, lay thousands of kilometres of cabling, and buy my own house so I can hardwire my network into the landline I installed to my own ISP.
Gotcha.

Ya they should have a respawn or something in that case. If it reconnected you to the battle sounds like a bug for it won't let you play.
But I like the idea of building your own ISP and using space magic |

The games are very short lived and live. When you drop, for what ever reason, you are replaced almost instantly... And generally the game ends within 15 minute of starting... So if you disco and have to reconnect, that is almost 7 minutes out of a 15 minute battle.
EDIT: For the record, I don't have a problem with people being able to reconnect... Hell, they can do it now, I watched Damian's War do it twice last night. But again, these are very short lived and live battles... It is not fair to your teammates (especially right now) to make them wait while you re-connect... If you can before the battle ends to begin with. |

The dropouts I get usually last seconds. I'm not replaced, I'm still in game. I can see and hear the battle going on.
But I can only do 3 things:
press (x) and forfeit all SP and ISK from the match, and get booted to the title screen.
press L1 if I'm in a dropship to fly up
press L2 if I'm in a dropship to fly down
If I'm not killed then I can wait out the rest of the match, taking up a slot on my team but getting my SP and ISK.
If I'm killed then I can't respawn, so I still take up a slot on the team until the game eventually boots me for inactivity 10 minutes later. In this scenario I get nothing, AND I'm taking up space on the team.
YOU are missing the point.

I agree to some extent when we're talking about short-lived pub matches. But team-based conflict in critical do-or-die matches will become VERY important in DUST and EVE, and the assets committed to them will be significant - you may even be rendezvousing with Eve Orbital support at pre-determined times. The losses a corp or alliance could sustain because of dissconect could be large enough to make you physically ill. And a lot of teams will be using special loadouts with player skillsets developed around integrated teamplay, so losing a teammate to disconnect may leave you FUBARed as a Fleet, MCC or Field commander.
I think a painless and in-game-popup-less way to deal with disconnects is to have a pre-match popup that asks a couple of questions about team re-connect policy. Corps could even pre-configure these for different match types or different specialist teams.
What I REALLY don't want to see is commanders and teams nerfing their tactics and strategies because they have to accommodate disconnects. So long as the commanding officer retains the ability to hold or give up a merc's slot the system should be able to adapt to just about anything short of the Internet going down.

Agreed absolutely, Umallon. But in the future that FC will be dependent on the ground crew getting their part of the job done, so the inability to deal with Dust disconnects could make everything invested in the orbital battle worthless. |

It just seemed like any other drop. So many battlefields, they all seem to blur together, and this was no different than any other. The sharp edged Caldari architecture sliced open the beige sky just like on a thousand other worlds. I could taste the dust even through my suits atmospheric scrubbers. As the installation drop-pods slammed into the hard-packed, desiccated soil, I could feel a crescendo build up inside me, my blood singing the glories of a new dawn of battle.
Guns thunder. Mercs run. Rapid Deployment Vehicles deploy tanks and dropships. One of the RDV's hovers above me, and I step aside to allow it to deploy its precious cargo. It took days of the creeping, skittering spiders running across my synapses, re-wiring my mental pathways to hard-code in the operational data of this under-appreciated little war machine. My Charybdis gleams, factory fresh, in the harsh light of an unknown star.
I vault into the drivers seat, plug in my dropsuit's neural link, and run a quick systems check. My board is green. I start the engine via link, and grip the steering wheel in my gauntlet clad hands. Although it is possible to control all the functions of the light attack vehicle through the link, I prefer the tactile feedback provided through operation of the wheel, pedals, and other controls. I've heard rumors of pilot dropsuits in development with more integrated neural controls, but for now my augmented body and accelerated reflexes will have to suffice.
My Charybdis purrs to life, and I check my heads up but it seems none of my fellow mercs want a ride. I gun the engine and take off down the road, kicking up dust behind me and keeping a wary eye out for signs of the enemy. My team seem to have taken out the enemies forward defensive line and are contesting the first two objectives. I try to keep a low profile, my plan is to flank the enemy and, if possible, hack a clone reserve unit. I deftly work my way around the outskirts of the facility, avoiding potential hot-spots I've identified from available intel on the site.
As I approach the first CRU everything seems clear. I fishtail my Charybdis into the perfect position to give me cover while I interface with the control unit. I make a quick check to be sure I'm clear, assault rifle at ready, but still see no sign of the enemy, no tell-tale flicker of orange on my HUD. My dropsuits E-war package goes to work, infiltrating the layers of security preventing unauthorized access. While I'm hacking I'm almost completely exposed. My anxiety prompts my suit to inject more combat stims into my already flooded system and by the time the hack completes I'm ready to eviscerate anything that dares get in my way.
I disengage the link and whip around, expecting to be surrounded by enemy combatants baying for my blood, but I'm met with only wind-swirled dust and the echoes of gunfire from deeper inside the facility. I board my vehicle and prepare to move on the next target of opportunity. But then something goes horribly wrong.
My uplink goes haywire. The connection that allows my consciousness to be transferred to a new clone in the event of my death screams inside my head, a wailing hiss of static and junk data. As quickly as it came the interruption is gone. My uplink displays a message in my HUD: Connection Lost. But I'm still in my clone. I'm still sitting in my Charybdis. But I can't move. I'm aware of my surroundings, but I'm paralyzed.
A massive Sagaris HAV rolls past me. I guess its one of ours because an enemy would have taken advantage of an immobile LAV for sure. I start to scream but even my mouth won't respond. I wail and thrash locked in the prison of my own cloned body. The distinctive thunder of a forge guns sounds, its projectile travelling so fast it leaves a wake of glowing blue plasma. My Charybdis explodes into a glittering cloud of metal particles and fire, and I'm released from my clone and uploaded into the CRU network.
I still have no control. I can't wake up in a new clone and fulfil my contract. I'm trapped in this hellish limbo. A disembodied voice reminds me that if I do not fulfil the obligations of my contract it will be permanently marked against my career record. I watch the markers of my team-mates as they maneuver about the field. Eventually they are pushed back to the landing zone, the mission aborted. The data from the aborted mission floods across the network, and I'm subjected to another screeching hiss of static.
I wake up. The actinic glare of the lights, and the harsh antiseptic smell of the med-bay flood my senses. I call up my neocom and order a replacement Charybdis. An orderly clears her throat.
