As a person who really appreciates art direction in games and other forms of entertainment, I thought I would give some feedback on the art direction of the game.
Firstly, the dropsuits: -Amarr heavy dropsuit looks beautiful; the design is great, there is good variety of color, and lots of attention to detail. -Minmatar logistics dropsuit looks awesome; the brown and gold color works very well, and design is pretty cool. Other colors like black or red ruins the look though. The militia logistics dropsuit actually looks cooler than the dull looking standard ones. -Caldari assault dropsuit doesn't look too great; there is a lack of armor plaring around the arms and inner thighs, which is strange for something designed to be used for frontline combat. The design looks pretty uninspired and bland, I guess its because Caldari stuff is designed for function and not beauty, but Caldari EVE ahips still show a lot of angular geometric beauty. example: http://eveinfo.net/wiki/worm_5~1.jpg . Overall I wish the Caldari assault armor was more angular like the concept art and early videos suggested: http://digital-art-http://bulk2.destructoid.com/ul/203064-Dust.jpg -The Gallente scout dropsuit is ok; the design is pretty solid, though coloring seems to be the determining factor in what decides in it ends up looking cool or not.
The vehicles: -Caldari HAV looks ok. -Gallente HAV look beautiful; the awesome shape, the wonderful curves, the blue green color, it all works so well. -Caldari dropships look cool; I love the angular look, and wish that was in the Caldari assault dropsuit as well. -Gallente dropship; beautiful and shapely. -Caldari LAV just looks ok. -Gallente LAV looks pretty like every other Gallente vehicle. -I really can't wait to see Amarr vehicles, lasers rock, and Amarr stuff just look great, example: http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2010/031/5/1/Amarr_Abaddon_wallpaper_by_Enterprise_E.jpg
The weapons: -Assault rifle is surprisingly visually unimpressive for something Gallente. The visual design is boringly conventional, and doesn't have the beautiful curves of the Gallente HAV and dropship. There is so many weird interesting designs that could have been used, examples: http://i35.tinypic.com/k1rybq.jpg , http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg36/scaled.php?server=36&filename=pascaleggertepica1gunwe.jpg&res=landing , http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y65/NinjaKrow/BlenderUnderground/Blender2UDK/Blender2UDK_026.jpg -Shotgun has a beautifully curvy and unconventional design, and I love looking at it in first person. -SMG looks ok, though definitely could have looked better. -Mass driver looks cool, the design is very busy, I like it. -Swarm launcher looks pretty bland. -Sniper rifles just look ok, and kind of boring. -Scrambler pistol looks ******* AMAZING! This is the best looking weapon in the game. I love the design, the detail, the sound, the electrified bullet trails; its all amazing. -HMG looks ok, could have looked more imposing. -Forge gun looks ok, and fits what one would expect from a Caldari weapon visually.
Environments -Gallente outpost on the communications map beautifully designed. -The outposts on the other available map, and the map from last build were just stylistically ok. -The lighting is good, though I hope when the game releases there will be more strange wonderful sorts of colored lighting; this could be based on the kind of star the planet orbits. -I can't wait to see Amarr and Minmatar outposts. -Sand looks pretty nice. -I also hope in the future we will have access to some of the life bearing planets of the EVE universe because I want to see some strange alien vegetation; something not necessarily green or even morphological like Earth plants.
Other stuff -Merc quarters look sterile and bland. It doesn't help that it's claustrophoblically small, or there are no windows to see out of. -Loading screen are a nice opportunity to show some beauty, it would be nice to see it used. -The space background
Overall I think this game has above average art direction. I don't expect anything to change because of this post at this stage of development, this isn't really important to gameplay anyway.
