A large component of the issues you describe are only really issues on X-Box Live because everyone gets a headset with the system, so there's no deliberateness required to get on comms and start being an idiot. Most places (other than what I can only imagine Goon comms look / sound like >_<) aren't like the cesspool that is XBL.
I have to agree it was worse when I had a 360... but there's still plenty of yahoos out there that have an open mic and never actually use it, we just get to listen to the sounds of their living room because it's awesome.
And nothing worse than joining a "CLEAN RACING ONLY-SERIOUS DRIVERS ONLY" lobby in GT5 only to have Mr. Clean and Serious eat couscous in my ear while I'm trying to run a race with him.
Perhaps a mandatory "push to talk" function would be helpful, but we probably lack enough buttons. |

PTT is mandatory on all voice servers I run, and with good reason (especially those assholes using desktop mics instead of proper headsets; I really don't feel like listening to EVERYONE"S echoes and feedback, thanks.) |

I have mine on, and I have a mic but i'm on TS3 with my alliance. Also for the majority of 1 match last night, all I heard was some guy saying Mr. PoPo in a very high squeaky voice. |

If the player corps work in Dust like they do in EVE, a player won't last long in the corp if he abuses coms or is disruptive.

How do I plug in a microphone to a PS3? It doesn't have an audio jack :/ USB mic, or bluetooth. Both work. |

You can set up your bluetooth headset just for mic and regular headphones connected to amplituner for audio. Works for those late night sessions.
I am playing after 22 GMT so only American kids are awake at this hour and they should not be on EU servers anyway.

I am using voice chat. I have a Bluetooth gaming headset.. But currently the voices are coming through my TV speakers rather than my headset. Is there a way of switching this? Is it done through PS3 Settings or through Dust 514 Settings? I cannot seem to find the relevant options. |

It's in the PS3 Settings. It's either under System Sound Settings, or under Sound under System Accessories. I can't recall. You set the mic level (to Off, or 1 - 5 volume level), then the input device. By default, your output device will then be whatever the input device you selected, but you can change the output device back to being what the default was. I expect you may have done that. If you want the in-game voice chat of other players coming through the headset, change the output device to being the same as input device on that screen. You will still get the game sounds through the TV speakers.
On another one of those screens I mentioned, I believe is where you can select to also hear the game sounds through the headset rather than the TV speakers (I think).
Hope this helps and I have those screen names right.

I just bought a usb mic last week, it's all properly set up in the ps3 settings, input is usb mic, output is default since I'm using seperate headphones. I have voice chat turned on in game, I can hear others but somehow nothing is coming through on my end, no one seems to hear me and I also can't hear myself in my headphones. I'm in the EU and I've tried it on both EU and US servers. |

If you go into the PS3 Settings, you should be able to test your mic to verify it's working. Also be aware that if you have the PS Move / PS Eye / PS2 Eyetoy, the camera has a built-in microphone as well. By default, I do not believe you hear yourself. You have to turn it on (or maybe it's on by default and I have just turned it off).
As far as hearing random things / baby crying / etc... I have not come across very many situations like this. I've had my PS3 for a few years now, and have had only a few run-ins like this. Yeah you run acaross them here and there, but nothing I found to be rampant. If people had a mic, they tended to be conscience of the fact. And because a mic is not bundled with the PS3, you have to actively want to communicate and buy one rather than it just automatically comming with the system / game |

The sucking part ends abruptly when you realize that the cries and tears over lost vehicles are well timed with your shooting said vehicles. Then it becomes a LOT of fun :P |

I'm married to a loud mouth Italian and my PS3 is in the living room next to the Kitchen (she's a great cook) if she talks to me while i'm in the game I listen and reply or pay the consequences (horse head in bed ) would be easier with push to talk but only a few interruptions here and there I can deal with. Stuck open mic or playing music is a totally different thing. |

Yeah, I've actually stopped using my bluetooth mic because of the lack of a mute button. Switched over to a XBox mic with a USB adapter. When the dogs bark or the wife talks I try to hit the mute button as fast as possible. |

I play in the living room where my wife is often reading or napping, therefore I do not have voice chat on for that reason. That combined with the typical screaming and cursing of others on most voice chat in most games = no voice chat for me. Not until I join or create a Corp at least.

I just want to add a rather important note for everybody playing the german version of Dust: the voice chat option under system/options/audio is actually labeled 'mute yourself' in the german version. If this is set to 'off', you actually do mute yourself, meaning voice chat is disabled and you can't hear nor speak on voice chat. You need to set 'mute yourself' to 'on' if you want to hear voice chat and be able to talk to others. Took me a while to realize this, so I hope this will help some folks in the future. |
