Please go into your options and turn voice chat ON. I know it seems odd, but that is the only way you will hear those with mics.
in-game go to System operations -> Options -> Audio -> Voice chat
It helps when you know what the rest of the team is doing. We actually do talk strategy in VC; and it would benefit you to also hear it.. ESP. when the game makes me squad leader and NO ONE can hear what I'm saying. and stopping to type can be the death of me. |

I sometimes have the opposite problem. I've already been in quite a few matches where my entire squad had VC on but the commander didn't. Rather stupid...
Also, having VC turned on sometimes allows you to hear the enemy due to the voice channel bug. It's very amusing hearing them say "This is hopeless! Hard push on A!" so I naturally go to A and wait... |

I love hearing the enemy but it definitely should remain a bug and not a feature. Don't force people to start using skype or C3 |

I've had that problem as well. I've also had a problem were 90% of the people had mics, and NO ONE said a word except for me. I like hearing the enemy sometimes. Makes me think I'm a communications spy |

That game where 90% of the people had mics and weren't talking...could have just been that they had voice chat on (thus giving them the little VC symbol), but didn't have mics. |

EDIT: Turn on voice comms even if you don't have a mic. If nothing else you can follow along with the strategies being laid out by those that DO have mics and support them and your team, rather than running off and lone-wolfing it. |

I normally play with the dam comms off becuase half the idiots in they beta have the shittiest mics I have ever heard in gaming history. I don't want to hear people talking about what they are having for dinner, what came in the mail or just down right their in game sound.
Need a quick way to mute people that is permanent and maybe I will use it mor often!
Just seems like everytime I want to get in some good comms, some jack hole messes it with kids yelling / screaming (literally) or talking to their spouse about useless ****!
Just glad I never got into console gaming, no way I oculd take that on a daily basis without going ape **** on people |

This is the first game I might actualy get a mic for, but only If they add some sort of Press button to talk thing, or I wont bother. Ive got a really nice surround sound system and i can hear other players game sounds and weird noises down there mics constantly with comms on, ruins the game completely for me. If they sort this out I will be happy to get a mic. |

Do I need to turn voice chat on if I do have a mic. I have had my mic on for 2-6 games and I have not heard one person and my mic was on correctly according to the audo device manager thing on PS3 settings. |

Yes, Had the same thing. I didn't know until I asked on the forum. I think it should be default on, if you don't want to listen to people there should be an easier way to turn it of in the comms menu or just an option to mute the player with the Baby crying or wife/mother yelling at them. |

I tried turning it on. The game then turned it off automatically anyway. I never heard anybody.
How do I plug in a microphone to a PS3? It doesn't have an audio jack :/ |

You need a USB mic or headset.

So since my PS3 Slim has only 2 USb ports, I can only get a keyboard and mouse or a microphone? Or do computer USB hubs work ok for consoles? |

EDIT: The PS3 also supports all bluetooth headsets, like you use for your phone, as well. |

You can use BT for cell phones but I'd go with the Sony PS3 BT as it has a mute button. This way if you're not talking to anyone ingame they don't hear you. I wish others would learn to use their mute as I really don't care about your personal life but I did get a good recipe that uses pot in it . |

Yeah, while I can't say anything negative about the POTENTIAL that voice comms has on PS3, in practice it's horrible. I've been tempted to buy a bluetooth headset, but then I remember:
1. Every 12 year-old in the world has a mic and uses it to practice swearing.
2. Every player with a mic has a spouse/significant other that insists on carrying on a conversation with a live mic in the room.
3. Screaming children/barking dogs/dying old people in the background distracts me from my game.
4. I don't want to hear you eat, drink, sigh, belch, fart, grunt, groan, breathe, **** or barf while I'm playing.
5. WHY ARE YOU HUMMING!?
So while the strategic value of being on voice comms with my team is very high, I can't be bothered to put up with the crap people do with a mic in their face. |

You are really antisocial aren't you. I agree with the little kids and conversations outside of the game but the rest is just natural. |

I don't see anything antisocial about preferring people not **** in your ear while playing a game. I'd love to hear your strategy during our match, but I have a hard time making you out over the d'bag eating a bowl of Cap'n Crunch while we're trying to play.

Just saying that you will hear some of1-3 and a lot of 4 and at times 5. If you don't want to hear any of it then don't use a mic. If you want to hear strategy during the mission then deal with the side effects of using a mic. |

Speaking from experience with the PS3 since its north american launch, the issues you describe aren't particularly widespread here. The fact that a headset isn't included, but that it supports any and all USB and bluetooth headsets, actively works in our favor: the vast majority that go out and bother to buy and/or set up voice comms on the PS3 are doing so because they want to actually communicate and work together.
A large component of the issues you describe are only really issues on X-Box Live because everyone gets a headset with the system, so there's no deliberateness required to get on comms and start being an idiot. Most places (other than what I can only imagine Goon comms look / sound like >_<) aren't like the cesspool that is XBL. |
