This button is actually really unhealthy IMO for constructive feedback during a beta. I'm seeing more and more of these "Like my post if you think XXX should happen" when the majority of these posts are features that are already being worked on but they did not bother to search the forums for. A couple of them have really nice ideas and I do not want to detract from them.. but seeing those threads simply breaks my heart.
'Like farming' posts are fostered from laziness or people seeking e-popularity, and they are not really helpful in the slightest. Even if an idea is cool, without a like button it forces people to actually post a response with their thoughts on the idea. You don't need to write an essay about it, just give a sentence or two on why you like (Or dislike) the idea. This gives CCP a MUCH better idea of how the players feel about an idea.
Likes on the forums are nothing really but an epeen tool. This is coming from the person before the wipe who had the most likes overall, more than twice as many likes as the people close to me. The forums are for ideas and discussions, not 'Like my status' posts. This is not facebook.
After the game launches popularity contests and e-peen drama is awesome. But for actually making the game better during beta, this is something I would rather not have.

Agreed. I don't even understand the concept of liking posts, really. If you like something you should say it. Anonymous likes are nice I guess but if someone actually takes the time to post about how much they like your topic then you REALLY feel good. |

Honestly I disagree, of course I have such a thread... Ideally such threads are taken down and a Dev or someone that they entrust from the community opens such a compilation, to aggrigate the results and requests people have. Fact is there simply isn't enough time in the day for the GM and Devs to go through every post on the forum, and without aggragates a lot of ideas will get missed.
Now that being said its also important to prioritize ideas which is the purpose of likes... Its entirely possible a lot of people with post ideas that are good, but the reality is posts and excitment about an idea do not indicate agreement with the idea, it can often be the opposite, and more importantly it can often be just that players are throwing out ideas for MUCH later without intent of them being worked on or added anytime soon... This means that even just scanning the forums for the threads with the most posts can be a misleading venture that has no results...
Finally some ideas are just too simple, and even if they are HUGE and have a lot of support there's just not much to be said on the topic... Points for stopping virus upload for example, a big deal, but what more is there to say about it? That's about it... So the like allows us to avoid endless repetition and useless posts.
Now as I said, my posts, others, and all like this should be deleted in my opinion, and one aggregate sticky post should be made that is updated by someone from the community that is trusted, and the devs if they get the time. That way we dont have this many posts.
But I stand by the idea that this idea has merit, when as you said its not used as an e-popularity contest... I personally dont care about 'my likes' just the actually posts themselves, rather mine or someone elses... |

My ***** is bigger cuz my likes received said so....
that kinda mindset never did any good, only helped tape measure manufacturers make more money, and hurt alot of feewings.
I think the " Like " button even on facebook was horrid, and nothing but a popularity contest, as everything gets turned into, now unless you are beiber, and trying to make a website social media's feature popular, " likes " doesn't getcha much.
So if you liked what I read, hit the " Like " button if you agree the " Like " button is a bad idea. |

Alright fine, introduction of polls would be nice then at least. To determine the most immediate suggestions. |

The problem with threads like that is not that they are popularity contests, is that they offer no context from the threads they came from, usually. Someone 'summarizing' can easily be biased and push suggestions they want and ignore ideas of merit from others. CCP actually has people in their community team who do read and summarize all the forum threads as part of their daily routine, and they hold weekly meetings based on these summaries with the appropriate dev departments.
They don't actually need us to make summaries for them, the important thing is the feedback. Likes are not feedback. Likes are arbitrary and misleading, providing no context. Since there is no dislike button, likes are also heavily biased. Sorting threads by likes is mostly pointless because of this.

Touche =), I guess the only other benefit that I could possibly leave is such threads give players a place to see ideas suggested thus far, and elaborate their concepts more clearly once inspired =). But frankly that's the point of taking the time as a player to show interest in what others post, thus a moot point. |

I've heard people complain about this, but for some reason I'm not seeing those kinds of threads. Link? |

Nellantar Ballsinya wrote:I don't even understand the concept of liking posts. Well then I shall enlighten you. Know how in forums people will quote a huge post just to put "I agree" or "+1" at the bottom of it? It's to stop that. If you agree but don't really have anything to add, tap that little like button and move on rather than spamming up the thread with one or two word responses. |
