I quite often played Commando in DUST for 3 reasons; to be different, because I spent the SP on Commando, and because I loved the Mass Driver and Laser (which were not always applicable). I never used Commando in PC though as it just couldn't hold up to the other suits. Even though I enjoyed Commando, in it's last state, it just wasn't really competitive enough as a serious playstyle. Therefore, I ask the following question: Do you think Commando should be in Project Nova? Quite honestly, I do not remember any Commandos in the Project Nova demo but that could have been simply because no one used them. In any case, please reply with your opinion. I will reply with my opinion later in the thread.

Commandos were in the Nova demo, they're just called Vanguard's now which is a far better name for the role they fill.

Cool to hear they are staying as I only noticed the 3 other roles in the PN demo. Of course, there was like only 1 to 2 PN videos and if I remember right, both were from players instead of directly from CCP. Since Commandos/Vanguard are staying and have no AV capabilities, they definitely need reworked for PN. I could have swore a previous bonus in DUST 514 was increased mag size but many deemed it OP where it was removed. Therefore, I doubt increased mag size will resurface. Something needs to make Commandos standout though. The increased damage bonuses did work but not against other proto roles.
Speaking of roles, not sure if it is just me but it seems somewhat laziness on dev side for Assaults/Logis and Sentinels/Commandos to look the exact same beyond color scheme. A lot of times in play, I remember players wondering if what killed them was one or the other. If power cores are indeed used, I hope there will be a difference between these roles even if it is slight such as a difference in helmet design. Going even further, if CCP rolls with the power core scheme, I wonder how players will be able to distinguish between T1 and T3. I guess all of this could be discussion in a different thread if anyone is interested.

I know magazine size was heavily discussed by the community but as far as I know the only role to have a bonus toagazine size was the Minmatar Assault.
As for shared models, this is honestly to save on memory budget. Sharing frame models basically meant you only needed to load 6 types of models ( 3 sizes and 2 genders...Though I think heavies were the same regardless of gender) instead of 10 models (5 roles and 2 genders).
On PC however that's not so much of an issue, so while I think they should still look similar, some visual variation would be neat.

IMO They should only stay if they can fill a role, and if that can be balanced within the other roles.
I think part of the problem in Dust was that they were too much a mish mash of Assaults and Sentinels while not being enough of their own thing. Being lumped in as a Heavy really hurt them EWAR wise, while they often didn't have the HP to compete, as slow as they were. And when you took into account all the module slots of the Assaults, you could really tailor them to encroach on Commando territory while having EWAR and speed benefits.
I really like the idea of Commandos, I just think that including them in a meaningful way will be difficult given their position between Sentinel and Assault.
Hopefully the new progression, EWAR, and other systems that will be unique to Nova will create more space for roles such as Commandos and have less overlap like we saw often in Dust like Scout/Assault overlap going from one direction to the other and Scout/Logi overlap, even way back to the Logi Slayers of old.

As far as I remember I used Commando only for two things.
1. Spam Agimus to be annoying and to kill in 2 shots. 2. Camp with Thales whenever I felt like it.
Assault and Scout were far better in the anit-infantry role. You needed but a one/two rail tanks to keep the enitre map vehicle free.

You really had to custom-build the commandos to work as anti-infantry. When they worked? Goddamn they worked. I made a few people really mad with the Ammando attacking control points. But it was better with assaults backing up. I basically used the commandos as heavy line infantry. it worked, it just isn't a really good solo option.

I'd fit a Minmando with ACR and MD, light armor and damage mods for fitting. With all associated skills maxed out you felt like an endless DPS machine.
I mean that's kind of their deal right? Sustained DPS.

The Commando could dish out DPS alright but the lack of slots and CPU/PG is what caused it to normally not last very long in a serious fight. Maybe an extra slot along with a buff to CPU/PG specific to faction would balance it better with the other roles but not really set it apart still. I still say I like how Hawken did heavies where you had to know how to work them to take advantage of the extra damage and defense. If CCP could do something similar with Heavies such as having them take less damage in the front but more damage in the back while shielding/armor is standard for Medium (same no matter where you get shot besides the head) and Scouts getting bonus damage in the back, I would think that would be great. That would provide a difference in defense separating Assault and Commando all the more along with the other roles as well.

Keep in mind that previous conventions may or may not make it to Nova.
For example we can expect more "active equipment" like the Scouts cloak. With similar role specific fitting bonuses, it opens up a lot of design space to make the commandos more unique than they were in Dust.

Well, it depends how they code it, anyways. Assuming they optimize it from the ground up (which they might do if Rattati is running the show), then sure it wouldn't be a problem.

No, simply because they were functionally too similar to assaults.

Vanguards (Commandos) in Nova had the typical dual-light weapon build in combination with a new jetpack/double-jump functionality that made them beasts at breaking cover. Which is exactly what they're designed for. Assaults are more general purpose combat, but the new Vanguards were specifically designed to put the hurt on players who stayed behind cover and played defensively. And they did that with brutal efficiency.
