Anyone who really enjoys sentinels or scouts and has played the game a lot in 2015, I want to hear your perspective. I didn't get to play at that time.
When I came back to DUST this year, it seemed like the sentinel was pretty much useless if you didn't have a Minmatar with Archdukes. However during this time there was a higher than usual volume of officer gear on the field. What was it like before the end of days announcement? It seemed to me like I couldn't even run my forge gun anymore in most situations, but even that was better than attempting to run HMG. If I could've put myofibrils on my Amarr sentinel I would. Even in 2015 I quickly realized Amarr was not the best sentinel as I'd hoped it would be, but during that time it was at least useful for stopping the other sentinels by resisting HMG damage the most. Since, other sentinels had virtually disappeared from the battlefield, and there was nothing left for my Amarr sentinel to do but try and be a bulky, slow shadow of what it once was. Maybe those of you who used other races with better damage resistances and perks did better?
Scout was obviously OK still. However I definitely noticed life being a lot harder for scouts, especially considering i was using gallente and still having trouble. With the explosion and rail rifle spam you couldn't even run it without shields. This meant all my other EWAR scanning capabilities were useless in the face of these godly jumpy assaults. Finally I realized that my scout could also jump, but that didn't do me much good for slaying. It seemed to me in the end that scouts were no longer capable of slaying much at all without a Scotsmans or doing some tricky things with remote explosives. I can't even imagine how hellish it was with a different race of scout, constantly being scanned.
I guess in the end Amarr really got the shaft across the board eh? Amarr assault and sentinel were literally the worst classes in the game. Cal Logi was kind of pointless but at least it could survive that ungodly explosive spam. I just really don't understand the need for those rail rifle and explosive buffs... Or why they couldn't nerf myofibrils and limit their effectiveness to one or two classes instead of making them the best high slot module for any suit.
DUST was just about so much more to me than pointing and shooting and clowning around. Hearing that they're already taking some of that gameplay value away in Project Nova is really a letdown. Hope im wrong

The real problem with the Amarr sentinel in my opinion was the fact that it ultimately required having a logi and benefited the most from a minmatar logi of course.
No other suit in the game really required having one other person with you at all times to be able to function. It is sort of hard to really lock down how it got to that point but I think it was really thanks to the fact that it depended on armor stacking which has a movement penalty meaning that while scouts and assault suits were able to bounce around like mad men you were just stuck in the cross hairs unable to land any real damage thanks to lag and *cough* not so great hit detection.

It was also the buffs to explosives and rail rifles. These things hit other classes just as hard, but like you said it was the armor dependency. This is why in the last few weeks before shutdown I made a salty post about shields being the only viable eHP value in the game, but it was really just armor plates that were the problem.
There really was a time when Amarr sentinel could just run by itself. I used to have the quafe blueprint, with armor plate bpo, only needed a basic HMG and i would still shred through any unprepared player. My favorite thing to do was killing other, proto sentinels with it.
In the end, it required 3 armor reps, a cardiac regulator, and either an Alldins or a freedom HMG. And really and truly it just required the Alldins over anything else. Only time Alex's was worth a **** was in a meat grinder, which was the closest situation I could get to those glory days of slaying all the other sentinels on the battlefield.

I still think this would've been the absolute best way to run it, then you could function for a short time without a logi. Its shields had a resistance to rail weapons which is a powerful tool especially when forge gunning.

Also I performed INSANELY better being followed by a Min Logi with a Gal Assault and Kalantes than I ever would with my heavy. Though I'm sure with some biotics you could get similar results on the heavy.

I was going ti argue when i read amarr assault and sentilel were useless, so its pretty pointless imo; maybe its because i ve never used armor plates on them. AHMG was broken, sentinels were fun to run even solo if they add them an uplink slot

Sentinels were great. KTM is one example...
I would rather tackle a logi+heavy train than one of the skilled Heavies in Dust514 KTM, FABIOS AMIR, Ardos and Solar to name a few that stand out could rip teams apart with / without logi support
And a shout out for Jammeh McJam.. absolute badass in the Ck.0 Sentinel

Don't use a specialized fitting to be a jack of all trades and you are going to get results.

HMG: The standard HMG may have been nerfed just a bit too much, and was less effective in the last six months or so. The Assault HMG was still very effective. The Burst HMG was very effective, but required a lot of player skill to keep it from overheating, and if it overheated mid fight you were usually dead.
Amarr Sentinel: This was a very good suit for solo work if fit properly until they reduced the Shield Recharge rate on it. For a long time you could duck behind cover and have both Armour and Shields top off at about the same time, assuming you had two Rep Mods equipped. Near the end though, your armor would be fully restored and you would still be sitting around waiting for your shields. It forced you to work in armor much of the time, which probably made more sense for an Amarr suit, but overall left it less effective for solo work.
The Amarr Sentinel continued to perform well with Logi support though.
In the last few weeks before shutdown I switched to the Cal Sentinel which still performed well solo, due to it's fast shield recharge.
Hand/Eye coordination cannot be taught. For everything else there is the Learning Coalition.

I loved heavy for like the 3 close quarters indoor maps. I had two different amarr sentinels set up, both with gastuns HMGs (deadly!). One fit had all complex armor plates when I knew we had logis who would rep. Yea it would slow you down but you're inside. Where tf are you Gona go. Another was half plates and half reps when there was one logi or even none so I could continue to kill and fall back to regain health if I needed. I would never use a heavy on one of the more open maps because of their speed. Heavys were never irrelevant on those maps. 25-50 kills were common especially the lunch box

Sentinels have always been the same way: highly dependent on how much money you throw into them, rather than player skill, aside from maybe using forge guns.
Seems like that's just the general rule- the heavier a dropsuit gets, the less player skill is needed, and your skill also doesn't get you as far. Why? Simple: more health means more room for error, and less speed means you're less in control of what's happening around you.
There's also how sentinels have very few slots, so you don't have to put much thought into a fitting, or even into having to use equipment. You just have to hope your teammates know what they're doing so you can leech off of them.
All they had to do was sit their asses in cover and shoot whatever comes their way.

I ran min and gal sents and really enjoyed the self reps of the gal and the mobility of the min. As with the sentinels i ran only gal and min scouts, min scout being my absolute favorite suit ever. One thing i always noticed was generally speaking this is in order of how often i saw each sent

Poor cloakshotties that still thought it was 1.8, not. The blobs of heavy-logis got wise to RE runs into rooms making re-taking points more complicated, but if hit detection is on your side the near silent NK could still wipe a room if you use RE runs as a distraction. Balance wise? I'd have like to have saw more Gallente and Caldari heavies on the ground. And I'd have like to see a decrease of clone Gallente and Caldari scouts and more Amarr and Matari scouts.
Balance wise as far as meta? As i said more variety. In PC you either saw variety or a requirement to run carbon copy popular fits. The jumpy MA with MD, the Dukes, the Scotsmans with bons and REs (and holy crap if your a regular gk.o), jumpy GA with bons that were SO. DIFFICULT. to kill, GL with 3 duvolle focused using supply depot exploit.
Very predictable. Winnining the PC hinged on who could do this the fastest and hold out. It was difficult for me because i didn't have the SP to skill into whats popular, wasn't good enough in my own roles to be fielded enough or was sick, so i was personally in a stalemate.

Caldari Sentinel is the king of 1 man LAV operation... Gotta have them stacked shields that can regen swiftly while you drive around. Just park up in the middle of a crowd and let the small blaster do all the negotiating.
Unfortunately you have to have a weapon, so I suggest basic nova knives... Which work brilliantly in the event you decide to jump out and make someone laugh at you. |

I used gal sentinel all the way until the end and was nowhere near useless, even in PC. It wasnt the slog through the map and kill anything anywhere fit, you had to adjust with each new build of the game. Even small updates made me change my fits and playstyle.
Amarr assault was good, I dont know about sentinel I never used it. All assaults were good toward the end. It wasnt the 2 shot scrambler sniper it was before, but it had some good purpose for pushing objectives from mid range.
Like the D1ck said, one of the major downfalls of this game in general and that led to a lot of things being nerfed or buffed improperly what people expected every single suit to do every single thing as good as every other suit which was not the case. I understand in the shooter most people want to be able to do everything without switching classes but at the same time you have to understand where your suit focused itself best and use it to your advantage and also understand that if you did not decide to switch suits in certain times you were going to be less effective on the battlefield and just roll with it.

Cal and minsents were always my go-to fatsuits, even before the shield changes (which didn't affect the calsent). Both for AV and CQC.
I preferred armor assaults and commandos, so gallente and amarr, and whenever i played scouts I basically ran around in whatever was handy, shooting people in the back with ACRs.
Gallente sentinels were actually the hardest to make truly viable, as they didn't really shine at anything. Amarr suits could get more HP or higher regen, and cal/min regenerated faster and could usually go faster.
Sentinels required an extremely passive/camper playstyle, or a complete, berserker, no-flux-given aggressive, door-kicker playstyle.
The primary reason why sentinels had such a high fatality rate is the speed dictates that if you are engaged, you have to kill the enemy. You aren't escaping, and if you got jumped by two or more enemies, your choices were as follows:
1: kill them all right now... RIGHT FREAKING NOW!!!
2: Die like a chump.
The only time escape was an option was versus a slower (or dumber) fatsuit.

Firstly, Scouts were never meant to be Slayers, they are Assassins. That means, while they were meant to kill, it was never meant to be frontal assaults, but took extra skill, patience, and time, meaning their kill numbers should never have been that of slayers.
IMO, what happened was that the Assaults (which certainly needed buffs at one point), were overly buffed, or perhaps just imperfectly buffed. I think when they were buffed, they should have dialed back the Slot differences at Advanced and Proto. The combination of the new buffs, and the significant slot differences, made the Assaults over perform.
Shortly before the end (but before the announcement of the end), according to Dust Thang, Assault usage was more than that of Sentinels, Commandos, and Scouts combined. Logis came in second, but they were still significantly behind Assaults. And while I think that as a whole, Assaults see more use, the margins of difference were just way too much to be appropriate.

Thats why I used the gal, it didn't excel at anything so it was up to the user skill to push it however you wanted. It was so middle of the road, but a good player could use it for just about anything. You're absolutely correct aboutthe engagement though, if you got caught out in the open you could call it quits, it was in your best interest to stay confined, or in an LAV lol.

Ran Amarr Sentinel literally the entire time I played this game. Ran Minmitar MKO and Gal and Cal at ADV. I could NEVER use the calscout. This guy(meaning me)depended on ProDamps. Usually preferred to run 18 db or lower. GalScout was great but in all honesty I could run an Assault MKO as a scout and get better results that way so by the end I was not running gal-scout Min-scout will forever be my favorite scout. The speed was epic. The slot layout was perfect. NK damage boost was even better. Could easily run the 18 DB I liked or lower to beat the Gal-logi scans and blow **** up with remotes in the process.
As far as Amarr sentinel I do agree with the fact that it was really dependent on a logi but it was not something that was a concern to me in-game mainly because I didn't care. Why worry about reps when I'm going to kill you before I need them. I know you said that the HMG was lacking but I SLAYED with even a basic AHMG. My set up was if I used a HMG I used a bolt pistol. Used AHMG on a fit then I would use a SMG to use as a clean up weapon.

For some bizarre ass reason, the calscout was the only one I ever got any real mileage out of. I had a few glorious murder sessions in the quafe scout with a quafe shotty, just running around murdering people. the other three I sucked at.
Never bothered damping it. Just ran around gibbing people.

I don't remember when, but I remember that at some point, Assaults became the new everything. They could pretty much be a scout with more health (although good luck getting under Gallogi scans) and were better Sentinels than the actual Sentinels.
This all because they didn't want to lock roles to their, erm, role. If only every module was percentage based instead of a flat number, I think Dust would've been far more fun/diverse/balanced, just by tweaking suit stats.
I hope they learn this for their new game.
