I don't think the negativity going around is necessarily true. It sounds to me like what they're doing is keeping this an RPG by making you earn the dropsuit that you're in and customizing it, and they're keeping it balanced like they tried to do last year around the time of release of the latest dust maps and apex suits.
And those two things are what I liked the most about this game. So while I'm not all that impressed so far, I'm liking what I'm hearing from the interviews. And honestly I'm starting to see the benefits of them going the Free to Play route again.
However it's difficult to see the game doing well without vehicles. All that struggle around balancing vehicles going to waste in the new game seems foolish to me. Even for infantry players, vehicles were one of the huge things that made this game great. That's probably my biggest problem with Nova so far.
Another thing they need to be careful not to get rid of is the social aspect. This game would be nothing without the corporations and alliances.

Well considering most of the assumptions running around directly contradict things that the developers have blatantly stated in various interviews on the news sites....you're right that most of the negativity is not correct.
As for vehicles, as someone who has used them from closed beta, I am sad to see that they wont be in the initial release but I completely understand why they won't be. It's not even a matter of balance....we can push numbers around for years, and we have, but there was still something terribly wrong with the system in general. Vehicle roles in most cases were not distinctively different enough from infantry roles. It spawned this stupid argument that I've grown to hate which is "Well how many infantry should it take to kill a vehicle" which...while an important question, is a terrible basis to develop the system off of.
I'm starting to lean more towards the idea that vehicles would be best suited in certain game modes where their purpose was not only unique from infantry, but necessary for the mode itself. For example imagine a mode where you needed to capture points on opposite walls of a canyon but the only way to access them would be via dropship shuttling back and forth across the chasm. Or a mode where infantry must escort and support HAVs to break down a shield generator that is vulnerable to vehicle fire only.
In cases like this, you end up with a need for vehicles in a setting that makes sense and can be rewarding, without leaving them in an ambiguous state where they tend to encroach on infantry roles, or straight up act like a power up (Or power down in some cases). As vehicles are in DUST now, the roles they fill are simply too similar to the things infantry do, and no amount of stat tweaking will fix that.
That being said, I think simply pushing them into the game as they are in DUST would be irresponsible...Id rather the base infantry gameplay be hashed out and then we can develop proper modes and roles for vehicles later....may that before or after 1.0

Well in regards to Nova people are saying the devs are doing one thing and then that day Rattati ells an interviewer they are doing the polar opposite.... I guess I trust the horses mouth more than the Bittervets?

It's true. DUST never really achieved a balance with vehicles. It just went from one overpowered thing to the next, ending with the invincible Madrugars and underpowered dropships.
But Star Wars Battlefront came damn close, and if they've nerfed the Rebel ships since I last played, it'd be pretty god damn balanced. I'm sure other games have as well.
CCP just can't hold up to other developers unless they bring their A game, and if they just give up on vehicles, to many DUST players that's just plain lazy game design.

I maintain that it's not so much lazy as it is a continued lack of commitment from CCP as a whole. It's the continuation of a small team with a small budget working at a slow pace. Hiring more staff is the absolute least they could do, one of the big reasons for balance difficulties and design flaws is likely due to having reduced staff and resources.
I mean, since Rouge Wedding this game has barely recieved any actual changes, I mean the DUST team did great with what they had but the point isn't what they did or didn't do, it's what was taken from them by CCP and never returned.

I don't know man. I've seen amazing things from small teams on low budgets. Take Metroid Prime for example, I've never played a game that rivals its quality.
I believe CCP is one of those devs who has the capability of being an amazing dev. Problem is they make too many mistakes.

Like I said, at this point it's just speculation. We'll just have to see what ends up in the game and how long it takes them to expand it, assuming they do.

It's hard to have faith in CCP. They dropped WoD mid development... and they dropped Legion. I wish they would just stick to their project and get it done.
Of course, you're going to have players that talk shlt. You always have. That smack talk doesn't interfere with Star Citizen's development. It doesn't interfere with Battlefield's continued existence... nor any other titles new or old.
They want to make Nova, then they need to just take what they learned from Dust, and DO IT. The best way to shut up a shlt-talker, is to ignore him and succeed anyway. I absolutely will 100% back them.
I've been a brutal critic of CCP in the past, but I absolutely want them to succeed. |

Jathniel wrote:and they dropped Legion. To be fair, legion was built in the hackjob UE3 CCP had made. It was designed in an attempt to get DUST off the PS3 as quickly as possible... not necessarily the best way to go about things. Nova is in UE4 for a reason; it's a better engine in almost every regard.

CCP will **** up in the development of product nova. Something will go wrong; a bug or fucky game balancing. Maybe the servers will go down for a day because of reasons. You get the idea.
Then we'll be right back here again. CCP lied to you, CCP cheated you, CCP is incompetent, "I heard CCP stomps on infants' throats!" Nothing will ever be good enough for the salty veterans. No forgiveness or leeway will be given and certainly no human error allowed.
So this has little to do with having CCP prove themselves. This has everything to do with sour, entitled player attitudes.

I generally don't bash CCP for little bugs or hiccups, but rather long standing habits and overall lack of commitment to their own projects.
I mean I'm definitely up there on the bitter scale but we're just as much to blame as those who refuse to acknowledge the constant failures of CCP as well. People who just cheer them on without making note of the many times they've done or said wrong simply empower that attitude and further ensure that Hilmar gives the minimum required to keep the game afloat.
Ultimately though CCP shouldn't give a flying **** about naysayers, they should be enthusiastic for their own game despite how we feel, otherwise they're just wasting their time. If they're excited for it and they're prepared to invest the money required then the game will do fine if nothing else.
At this point it's a matter of does Hilmar actually give a ****? I mean he essentially shut down DUSTs development 2 years ago, dangled Legion for us then canned that, and is now dangling a new project that he still hasn't even greenlit yet? That's not exactly encouraging :/

That's not exactly encouraging :/ This is a matter of perspective. "Essentially shut down DUST's development 2 years ago" also includes putting CCP Rattati in charge of DUST which led to balancing and the community having a bit more trust in CCP Shanghai*.
"Dangled legion for us then canned that" Okay, you aren't incorrect, but you are leaving out one glaring issue: HE SHOULD HAVE CANNED LEGION. It was a hurried, unplayable glorified cutscene made with that modified version of UE3 CCP made for Dust. He did the right thing. UE4 is a much better engine and where product nova needs to be.
"Dangled a new project that he still hasn't even greenlit yet" C'mon man... there was a pre-alpha demo available to players at fanfest. This was largely done to generate feedback before they pull the trigger on a new project. By the by, the feedback was "overwhelmingly positive" according to Rattati and some DUST vets who attended fanfest.
*: or at least CCP Rattati.
DUST Fiend wrote:At this point it's a matter of does Hilmar actually give a ****? This is a tougher question because it seems that Hilmar doesn't give much of a **** about anything that isn't VR right now.

The tech demo didn't seem that much more involved than Legions other than players could mess around in it, which is a step up certainly. As I've said repeatedly though, we'll just have to wait and see.
I'll either blast them or praise them on that day, either way I'm guaranteed to make a fool of myself per usual. I just have no faith in CCP right now but I'm too mentally diseased to leave

I think even if its dust on PC with the same problems we had which it wont I would still be there, The social side to this FPS, its merge with EvE, the corp and alliance aspect, PC as buggy as its been. The players who have been and gone, the hilarious moments and the salty times, how a simple thing can form a bond of battle brothers or a bitter rivalry. The random items Devs dropped every month in the news letters, now most games you would need a season pass for lol. The Forums, In game chats, and messages that go back and forth, our freedom of expression is stretched beyond most other games. Only in New Eden. We have had our good days and our bad, and I cant wait to do it all over again.
I just hope that its at now gen or even next gen graphics and gameplay, I cant come back to Dust because it looks and feels to retro, even a ps3 pad feels weird. So far from the little I have seen and heard on Nova for what it is I'm happy. And it would be awesome if most of you made it there.

I could not disagree more.
There is a huge difference between laziness and prioritization.
A crappy shooter with vehicles is still a crappy shooter. Haven't we already learned that from Dust?
Vehicles are a massive resource sink in more ways than one and very far from being an integral part of a shooter. First you have the actual vehicle design itself, then you have map layouts needing to be centered around making vehicles operable while still being fair, and then you get into weapon design meant to counter said vehicles with the balancing that goes along with that.
The size of the team working on this new game has been mentioned and while we do not know how big it is we do know that CCP is not EA with 100s of developers and support staff to bake in any idea they come up with.
Why in the world would splitting that team up to work on something that is only going to only produce a small amount to possibly a negative income thanks to the extra man power and the fact that the people that come to the game for a FPS can not even get a good FPS experience?
Rattati is making the absolute most logical choice possible here. Building a shooter requires BUILDING A SHOOTER.
I get that the people that had lots of fun with vehicles here in Dust are not happy with vehicles being left totally up in the air in Nova but what needs to be understood is that vehicles were part of Dust which will not even exist in a couple of weeks while Nova is only getting off the ground.
Those of us that wanted a good shooter and got bad hit detection, bug after bug, constant nerf / buff cycles, and insane llag are more than happy with the fact that vehicles are not part of the picture just because it shows a focus on what matters as oppose to pandering to the masses once again with empty promises and delusions of grandeur on a shoe string budget with mediocre management and sharing devs with another game.
Just think what all that dev time wasted on vehicles in Dust could have gone to.
Vehicles ended up being responsible for somewhere in the area of 10 weapons once you count A/V yet we only had 1 heavy anti infantry weapon. Am I to believe that the time and money spent on that much stuff could not have created even less weapons just to flush out the full aspects of the game?
Vehicles were responsible for 6 different models that were far larger than a suit yet it took years for us to see suit parity. Anyone that was looking for a shooter would agree that time could have been far better spent.
Map design was forced to work within even smaller memory constraints than what was there on the PS3 to allow for all the extra models and activity.
The list goes on and on but they are all hypothetical thanks to the fact that all of the time burnt on vehicles and their balancing can never be gotten back. |
