Been an EvE player for a long time. Was invited with the rest of the EvE community to join the Dust open beta, and became a beta vet, although I didn't play really until a little less than a year ago.
I was looking for the same sort of things that others were, who came from EvE - the idea of fighting on stations, as well as on the ground, the possibility of piloting a ship that would transport people from a station to the planet, that sort of thing. Lots of things that didn't happen.
What I found when I came back was very different from what I first believed Dust would be, but it was still good enough to stick around and see what I could do with the skill training, full Caldari all the way as with EvE. |

The game promised complex large scale combined arms battles where the skill of individual players and the ability of leaders to organize would really matter. The promise of persistence for your victory or loss. The true sense of loss when your clone died with all its gear.
That was the lure. I took my first dropship flight the day after they received their realistic flight mechanics and I was hooked. Here was a truly skill based flying vehicle in an FPS! I dreamt of how they could be used as troop transports after finding my position overrun by a troop drop in an early corporate battle (recounted in my Dropship FlightSchool thread).
I championed the new Dropship through release after release, enduring flight ceilings, explosive paint, and over powered swarm launchers, occasionally indulging in the guilty pleasure of being an overpowered "death from above" when the pendulum swung too far my way. I tried to explain the new flight mechanics to new players and build a dedicate cadre of pilots who would prove their worth when the maps opened up and we were truly needed. The future was SO bright...
Alas, CCP never delivered. They turned my beloved dropship into a simple gun platform which had to compete by killing infantry, lacking any role to call its own. The dropship was still a skilled platform, but it didn't have anything to do. I was frustrated.
Eventually I stopped playing when I realized it was never going to change. Project Nova revives the promise, though it will take a long time before we learn if it will deliver. Unfortunately, from what I know of CCP, they never deliver on their promises, most of which are pure vapourware. It really baffles me that they haven't figured out people actually know this now, and they haven't worked to correct the image. Perhaps Nova will be their first attempt at doing just that, but I doubt it.
I like the dropships too, and was so looking forward to piloting them rather than the infantry stuff. But no, it was not to be, and this new FPS-focus which suits all the people who only see Dust as an FPS, probably means even if Nova really does get off the ground, there won't be anything in it other than the FPS stuff, sadly.
I'm sure that will suit most who currently play Dust. It won't suit me. I'll play the alpha/beta if I get invited, but I doubt that it will go anywhere much after that. |
