TL/DR: Re: the subject line.
Reading through a few threads this morning got me thinking. What with all the various opinions being tossed around on the frustrations of DUST's hopes and expectations and the recent NOVA curve, I wonder how expectations of what may come in NOVA as opposed to what did or did not come in DUST are affected by our individual initial draw to the game.
So if you can really think back for a moment, how did you hear of DUST514 and why did you care about it at all? Was it just some random PS3 advert for a F2P shooter? Was it EVE related? Word of mouth? If so, how was it described to you by your friend? You get the point.
I know these threads are a dime-a-dozen, but for those of you who have remained (at least in this forum community), I am genuinely curious what brought you here. In a way, perhaps it's more important to consider why you are still here. Please comment on that too, if you would?
For me, I stumbled on it by mistake. I started EVE maybe a decade ago and played for several years. One particular update required more than my graphics card at the time could handle, so that was that. From time to time I would re-sub, but by then the interface, stats, or whatever else had changed so I just never really got back into it. A few years ago I remember reading an article or blog about some space-sim in development so I wanted to check up on it. It MIGHT have been Star Citizen, but I think it was before that and believe it was a one-word title but age and such leaves me confused more times than not. So meh.
Anyway, searching for that random reference I stumbled on DUST514 information. Ironic that it was being developed by CCP. In EVE, I always fantasized of entering the atmosphere of some random planet rather than just passing through it as I did in warp. DUST seemed like the idea was there at least, so I requested closed BETA access. I saw that EVE players probably had their invites but I don't think I was subbed at the time. I registered from dust514.com.
I stayed because of the variety of skills to chase. That aspect became somewhat like a collection addiction. Gotta catch'em all! Ya know? I haven't played in well over 6 months, at a guess. That's mostly due to returning to college to finish my degree this past Fall (a LONG overdue closure in my life), and various other real life distractions. But I still forum because I just enjoy seeing what people have to say about the game. Too, I enjoy(ed) the interactions and opinions of the dev staff. Whether it was honest feedback on some user-posted idea or just trolling nay-sayers, I always thought that was unique and ...good. Of all the divide on possible data transfers, I do hope that at least this one aspect of DUST makes it into whatever final incarnation CCP ends with.
Bla bla. Maybe I'm just stalling getting to my job this morning, but it was an honest wonder. Alright. Time to get to it.
Thanks,
- meow.

Seeing how that played out, do you still play? Why are you still in forums if you do not play? Not being a smart ass! Just fishing for perspective.

I don't know if MAG was also a combined arms game like DUST, but that was a big draw for a lot of people too, myself included.
Basically MAG shut down right around when DUST started up, so it seemed like a natural shift at the time.

What is this? Some sort of secret Gallente tea party? XD
What first brought me to Dust... one summer's day I was browsing the PS Store looking for free games, and I came across Dust 514. A First-Person-Shooter with a cool name... interesting - I thought
I'll be honest, Dust 514 was my first FPS experience, and it will always stay in my heart as one of the best-feeling immersive shooters ever.

Thanks for the thread. Hope this doesn't serve as a Reqium, but for me I guess it is.
My boyfriend likes CoD, MoH, SOCOM fps games, not me. I used to like the ones that simulate WWII events (cool experience), but apart from that, I get bored with fps quite fast. I'm a PCC! (...PCC stands for, Plump Cute Coward).
On the PSForum (not an Eve fourm), folks were posting about Dust 514, and how it was free to set up and play. And CCP Eterne was the only dev posting on the PS forum (I think he was assigned as CCP's official overseer for posts on the PSforum). Anyone who likes good story writing should check out Eterne's work on the EVE World News feed. He's terrific.
By this time my BF had been playing Dust in Beta for 3 months or so. It was the only game I recall ever hearing him swear at the tv when he plays. Yet he said it was great, and wanted me to add a character to his account. Hmmmm.... I was skeptical, and I watched all the EVE vids and all those explanatory Dust vids that CCP made, before I let Steve talk me into setting up my character.
My Character. MY CHARACTER. Mine! That's how I saw Dust 514. Not a shooter. A Character-creation game. You're in a combat world, but you slowly need to educate and train and nurture this character you made. And you need a LOT of social interaction with other characters made by other players, in order to build your character into someone other players see as valuable, or worth fearing.
How much will other players value your imaginary character? Enough that they will "hire" your character to fulfill a mercenary contract--and pay you a price you can negotiate. Wow! This isn't an Call of Duty. It's Monopoly on a galaxy-wide industry level! All in the hands of each solo player, for her to succeed or for her to screw-up. The part that deals with guns and weapons is too complex and granular for those fps-elite gamers to get through---it will kick them in the arses. There are ideas being launched here that completely redefine and outclass the corny shooters Steve plays. And the whole process might take years for even the best players to complete.
....But both Steve and I were brutally and repeatedly slapped around on the battlefield. That made me more determined to stay in the game and explore non-shooting careers. And Steve? Uh, well, he's used to putting a scope on his SOCOM weapon and cleaning the board. ....The Dust matches in 2013 were the kind of matches where you don't clean the board---the board cleans YOU. (and picks its teeth with the proto rifle you brought with you.) He got more frustrated and left me driving Dropships.
Now all the innovation and bold ideas are discontinued (or so it appears with this Nova stuff). If it hasn't got that extensive complex Monopoly feel to it, it's just a glorified CoD. So there's no need for me to join Nova. But the Grimsnes is still here in Dust 514 until the end of the month.
The Grimsnses was my character's career, and was becoming her path to super-wealth. I stay because of the love of a good horse. Me and Cochise... (Cochise was John Wayne's horse,... not that airy-fairy dope called Trigger that Roy Rogers used to ride, yuck.)
Universe of good wishes for the 49, especially CCP Eterne...

Sad to see a fellow pilot left in the dust, here's hoping CCP realizes that this game being a combined arms game is part of what made it great, and hires more devs to get vehicles put in at release.

MAG was dead, DUST was billed as the possible next big thing with a meaningful link to another game in which they would both interact.
Having played EVE before it to get a taste of what CCP could do i was impressed, EVE FPS with so many options and ideas to make it something completely different to other FPS, it would not be a gloryfied TDM or a simple arena shooter.
Like MAG but winning means something, at least in FW and null, no ****** flag but actual benefits which affected EVE and vice versa is what we hoped for.
Infantry and vehicles actually having choices and being able to be fitted how you want just like the ships in EVE.
In the end is was the vision and hype in which i got carried away, never again though.

If you like MGO2 you will most likely hate MGO3, they took what made it good out and replaced it with dumbed down features or just outright cut it out.

I think most hardcore MAG community migrated to DUST because we like unique large scale shooters (even tho MAG crushed every game when it came to large scale battles) DUST had that large learning curve I need to keep me hooked.

WOW was becoming too dumbed down.
EVE had no aiming, and very limited direct control of flight (it was more like being the Captain, than the Pilot) and while I enjoyed the tactical aspect of EVE I wanted a bit more of a hands on experience.
Solo and small Gang PVP in EVE required such a great knowledge of ship type and configuration, just to know whether to fight or run away, not to mention what range and vector to use, that even after a year of small gang PVP in Syndicate I still felt like a complete noob. DUST promised some of the fitting complexity of EVE, but without fitting being the be all and end all of whether or not you won a fight. I liked being able to kill a full Proto suit with a Melita fit in DUST.
I liked the sci-fi setting.
I liked the idea of complex fittings, and a persistent world.

There were a bunch of E3 trailers in the psn store and, since they were free, I figured I'd take a look at some of them. I saw "Dust 514" and thought, "The Hell is a Dust 514?" so I downloaded it to see what it was as well as several others. I watched and thought "Horry shat! This looks amazing!" Being a fan of sci-fi and hearing that voice over that played, which I loved, I thought this was going to be one of the best campaigns, if not, most ambitious, I would ever play. I wanted to use that droupsuit and rifle that were in the trailer.
Then open beta came out some time later and I downloaded it. Since it was a beta, I wasn't expecting a campaign and was surprised that neither the suit nor the gun were in the game. I figured, they would be released in the full game. But I was greeted with a nifty little tutorial video. I kept playing because 1. I wanted to use that gear. and 2. It was actually pretty fun.
I didn't even notice when the "full game was released" but when it was, my heart sank when I saw there was no campaign. It sank even deeper when I saw that the gear still wasn't there. But there was hope for those since stuff was missing like the pilot dropsuits. I figured it was going to be a Cal light frame so I waited until they released those God knows how long later. But by then, I had already lost hope, it was no surprise to me that they didn't use the suit, that the game wasn't as grand and immersive as I wanted to be. But it was decent.
The reason I still play is because it's fun from time to time, the customization is amazing, and I already spent money on this game. (Quafe cal med. used to look shiny and pink, or proto with purple. I bought both and I want them back.)

Got my first (very noob) FPS experience at a friend's house playing Halo & COD. Didn't have access online gaming of my own at the time so I was always looking for a fix.
Then I got my first PS3 & access to online gaming, went looking for free-to-play and found DUST514. Addicted immediatly. Then my TV (old non- flat screen) was KIA. Took a while to get another one. Then my PS3 (fat vacuum cleaner) also was KIA.
Took such a long time to replace to my current PS3 I'd forgotten about Dust until I got a thing for free aurum & some other stuff that came with PS3.
At that time I had turned 18 and gotten my own PSN account so I started over on this alt.

I am pretty sure Sony promoted it during the start of Open Beta, and it had that Space/SciFi thing going on. Plus it was free. I figured that it couldn't be too big a time or money commitment if I didn't like it.
It was the same for PS2, except that turned out more boring, and didn't have near the community or forums.
