Yes, the one benefit to CCP's new policy is that when they actually -do- tell us something its not some pipe-dream or far off plan but something that they have already taken action on, seen feasibility, and have a realistic timeframe on getting things done.
That time frame may be a year or so out, like with the initial reveal of citadels, but it is something that is happening and they likely are holding out on marketing relevant info until Fanfest when they can get the biggest bang for their announcement.
All they did here is give us a heads up so we wouldn't get ... well... fanfest'ed again.

The problem with that is that it is not a simple matter at all to implement. As EVE stands the same techniques they use to allow thousand + player battles also inhibits any meaningful fighter role from interacting with EVE ships in the same space. (Server tick is too slow for fast paced action)
The only way you could even conceivably have it is have some complicated mirror set up where one server is the EVE side, and the other server is Valk side, with the two servers having to talk to each other in set intervals to help relay positions of EVE ships for Valk, and for EVE it would be almost impossible for them to interact with the fighters short of seeing "Fighters" being present.
For that to even work however requires both games to be fully independently realized and made before the technology for such a psudeo-link could be realized.

You realize that both of those games are built from the ground up to NOT be player driven the way EVE Online is? Elite: Dangerous only just recently started allowing player groups to apply to possibly be accepted as entities within the galaxy. And that still does nothing about how the largest group of players you can have in gameplay is 4, because if you try and do any cooperative activities with anyone outside your Wing, you never know who's going to get the payout while everyone else gets nothing.
Star Citizen is going to have a "PvP Slider" that allows people in "high-security" regions of the game to pretty much completely remove any contact with other players in what is supposed to be an MMO. Players can make Organizations that work like Corporations in EVE, but territorial ownership and warfare will not be a part of this as the development team feels that would not benefit the game. There's also no means for players to build anything or influence the game economically. At least Elite: Dangerous uses the Community Goals system to provide a little variety even though they still have NPCs making everything.
CCP is NOT under threat by either of those games. All three games have positives and negatives and while they may appeal to some of the same people, they are also built to appeal to different kinds of people.
I agree with Mobius. Just because there are more than one "space mmo" does not mean that they appeal to the same group of people anymore than Lord of the Rings, Neverwinter, Guild Wars II, and World of Warcraft all appeal to the same group as being "Fantasy MMOs". I would even argue the differences between EVE and these other games are more extreme than the fantasy examples, as Wyvern stated.
Quite honestly, EVE could have any sort of genre skin over it and I would still be attracted to it. It could have been fantasy where ships are replaced with magical knights, archers, and wizards, or one where you are playing a psudeo-modern world setting. The things that keep people playing EVE, and to a certain extent why DUST has managed to keep it's community for so long, is not simply the genre skin, but the meat of the mechanics that provide an interesting sandbox experience that allows for meaningful player interaction and choice.
That's why I always find it strange when people list these games as direct competitors, because thats just looking at surface genre. The meat of these games are wildly different, and there may be some players who like both gameplay styles. However you won't be getting your EVE fix in either of those games.
