WINE has actually come a very very long ways. There are few windows programs that can not be run in wine.
Beware tho that some high end games will have trouble running in WINE just because of the load generated and sub optimal core use. |

Get one with win 8, then install a classic start menu ( aka classic Shell it is a start menu that can mimic the menu behavior of Win XP and Windows 7). That's what i done for me and my brother, gives the benefits of win 8, with out all those dreadfull menu's. |

It seems everyone hates it due to Microsoft "spying" on them. Honestly it's only to improve their product. Everyone Spies. Get over it. Facebook does it, the Apps you install do it. Hell, Apple does it all the time.

Pretty close to xp with less of the app garbage of windows 10. Interface is easy to use as well

so your trying to decide laptop or ps4?
apples and oranges. if not... i'm confused, if your think your going to get a cheap/small laptop that runs games well for less than a ps4 costs, good luck, there will be trade offs somewhere.
size / price / performance you can choose 2. :)

Laptops are notorious for being overpriced compared to their tower brother's.
You can build a tower more powerful than a ps4 for -ú500. A laptop your gonna spend about -ú700 easy to get to ps4 quality.

Noo, i wish for a laptop that's small... And sadly uses outdated software like XP. Price had nothing to do with it. Although, I'm not trying to spend a ton of money.
The real issue is battery life.. Nothing will be able to compare to what my current laptop has. It's old yes, but I have around 7-8 hrs of battery when full power saving, and 3-4 hrs in high performance (although it's performance is pretty poor according to today's standards)
Yes, Windows 7 is nice looking, and it's actually not too bad (my mother's laptop uses it), but my Theory was this:
"old software was written using old technology... If I put new technology with old software, the performance will have a serious improvement in all aspects since the older technology uses far less resources to run."
Like when I upgraded my ram from 1 to 2 GB. It's like a brand new computer again! Imagine using 2 GB of ram now? It's like suicide on newer computers.

Makes sense, but if I'm spending money on a computer, it better have more use than just for gaming. School, and personal use too.
No tower will be able to come along with me LOL.

I imagine you would run into driver issues with old software/new tech. I dunno.
You could always get a nifty lil Surface Pro 3. With the 4 out, prices are dropping on last gen. Touch/pen tablet/latop hybrid, VERY stylish and mobile, removable cover keyboard, expandable with docking station for ports and additional monitor outs, etc. Not sure what OS the SP3 has, but specs are pretty good for what it is. Too, the Microsoft store offers student discounts either 10-20%, I can't remember. Use it to make hand-written notes during class, and game on it in the evening.
Like Jordy said though, there's always a trade-off. Size for price for performance; though being last gen, you will have more leeway to get more of each for the price of a lesser current model.
Just putting it out there.
Good luck to your hunt.

you think ccp's new game will work on a lowly laptop, you are mental, you'll need a top end stand alone pc to play, as they want it to be 'future proof', so that means running at the top end spec (2 years from now) so you'd all better start saving,

It might not even be Windows 10 at this point, could just be a memory leak somewhere. Whatever it is it's really annoying.

A game like Star Citizen will require top end, but I really doubt this game will be too hard on machines.

It shows up as "System" in task manager. It's a feature that's been around on OSX for a while, and Windows just caught up.

That makes it use like 28 gbs of ram? Honestly I don't have any idea what I'm doing so you're probably right, but when I restart I'm at about 5% RAM then by the end of the day I'm usually at 50%, then the next day or two it goes up to 90% and I have to restart to get it to go back down.

The more you use RAM, the more Windows will compress it. I get the most compressed RAM when I use Photoshop, After Effects or Premiere.

It just kind of steadily raises itself. I used to use the Adobe stuff but I'm currently a dirty poor and won't torrent **** lol. Which is kind of lame cuz AE and Premiere are great tools to use.

Sounds like a memory leak, you would have to look in the Task Manager (Resource Monitor) to find out what program is using up the memory and then go from there. Memory leaks are defect programs. So if it is the system, it could have happened when you did an update, etc perhaps. So try rolling back or if that does not help reinstall. However if its a different program like a torrent downloader, firefox etc. then remove that and it should be ok. Third option would be malware. |

Something tells me CCP is unlikely to move beyond DirectX 9 given that Direct3D 10 was a waste of time and DirectX 11 only added tesselation, which doesn't even make that much of a difference really.
I wouldn't know anything about DirectX 12, but unless they actually tried to innovate this time, I wouldn't hold my breath on CCP adopting it.

12 is actually a big jump. When AMD was showcasing mantle Microsoft implemented many of Mantle's features into dx12

Some people actually understand what I mean.
Well, I'll break it to you guys... Until my current XP laptop gives up... I won't really be moving into the new world.
Some people understand what I meant though, like XP would be "lighter" that newer windows...
One mentioned go linux + WINE.
Some say Win 7 is the end all be all; It's like XP w/ support.
Price vs performance vs size....
Pretty hard choice... I could only get 2 of the 3.
I don't like the lil tablet hybrid thingy... Plus LOL I'm a lil old fashioned and have a note book for dedicated school notes, and my Galaxy Note for quick written notes. Still, I'll take it in consideration when it's time to upgrade!
