I'm putting this in generally mainly because this is a multi-faceted post, but I really do need a lot of tips about what I might do better... I'm tired of sucking.
Info) I have been playing off and on passively for years. I live in Japan. I don't speak Spanish but thats usually what matchmaking pairs me with, so I play alone as 'that blueberry.' I can't spend/play much due to being married, and my time schedule is like 8am-9am Tokyo time...sometimes. Basically when the wife isn't here.
I have 26m SP, and its stacked in caldari commando, sniper, rail rifle, and core stuff like engineering and shield mods. I have a headset, but I can't get it to work on PS3. I use a mouse and dualshock.
Map awareness: Normal (played LoL) Gun game: super fail, especially when close up, can't move with the target fast enough. Long range gun game: OK. Good aim with sniper rifles, FG, pretty good at estimating tragectory and leading shots.
1) Matchmaking. I always get paired with spanish people. I play in an odd time zone. This also leads me to be unable to find pub matches (which I can actually win and get daily rewards in.) Scotty just times out when I play. I can find FW matches but the quality of player is vastly different, i'm usually outmatched and/or teamkilled repeatedly by dweebs with free time. Terrible record at FW but I'm trying to get APEX so just being the little engine that could. Really could use tips on how to work the matchmaking queue and know when I can get in a pub. the timer says 18 secs but its always in reality 10+ mins
2) Squadding. I've tried. I have issues with not figuring out how to get the headset to work (works on my PC) and also squadding with English or Japanese speakers and not Spanish. Also time to find a squad and start a match because, at most, I've got like an hour to play usually per day.
3) Gun game. Not sure how anyone can help me not suck here. Getting a mouse helped a lot. Maybe recommended sensitivity settings? Can make sense of that anyhow. Also using Rail Rifle even with skills at 5 the kick is rough to deal with and accurately hit a target moving. Assault rifle with 0 skill I usually hit better with (at range,) though its not my spec. Close I get reamed unless I'm in a heavy suit or shotgun. And even then I get embarassed 50/50.
4) Suits and stuff. I think they are ok? I run calamando a lot. Sometimes Tactical SR/RR, sometimes RR/Swarm. All suits have nice shields but I tend to stay low tech because i'm poor and trying to save ISK for baby's first APEX. Maybe some times on which APEX to aim for, but for now i'm going for Samurai cuz thats where the SP is.
5) Gimmick builds: not a fan because they get nerfed. I tried jumpy suit and got a few easy kills but I don't really have a good feel for jumping with my controller X and using my mouse..and using controller only puts me back a few levels of suck in gun game, which is already terrible. I kinda just want to improve my base game then work on the gimmick crap later.
6) Corp. I never tried. Probably wont due to my schedule, location, poor skill, and I REALLY like my 1-man corp to store up CP I'll never use. But I heard something about social groups. No idea but maybe interesting?
Thanks and sorry for the long post.

Mouse and DS???
I think I tried that when I started (for sniping) but it sucked big time, so I went back to standard DS.
I think sensitivity settings might be the key here. But these are highly individual. They depend on the weapon you're using and your playstyle, so you have to do some trial and error.
I for myself like much higher sensitivity for hipfire then for aim down sight. But I'm using a Massdriver, and need fast rotation while hipfiring close range.
Also the rail rifle is pretty damn bad while hipfiring, so I'd switch to a sidearm close range (SMG or magsec) if you're good with a pistol use those.

I dont really pad kdr lately, because when I give up I just redline snipe the guys camping spawn points farming noobs who spawn there. Even in starter sniper suit headshots still ohko proto suit with max skills. But doing that doesnt help me win matches it just helps me save money and troll. Sniping isnt going to help my team win matches so im trying to improve gun game and get in there more. |

Respec into Ammar scout Lvl 5. This will be your only suit.
Train only ScR(aScR will be your primary), SMG & nades, max skills(eventually, but get the damage bonus asap).
Max ewar skills - this helps you compensate for gun game. Battlefield info makes all the difference.
Max biotics, you're a scout.
Max ehp cores and modules.
Two fittings: Insertion scout with damping/uplinks(run at match start and when needed), Combat scout with onde damp, kincat, armor/reps, needle + equip of your choice(bpo rep tool is nice).
It's a solo survival suit.
P.S. the Warbarge damage bonus is important for your aScR & your SMG.

In a game full of cheap tactics, its pretty hard to get good in a sense of just being good. Its more so now, what can you use to counter meta flavor and cheap tactics. Which involves speccing into 85 percent of the races and roles combined to be effective.
So with 26m lifetime SP, you still have grinding to do. This is not the Dust of the time before. 26m provided you a bit more edge against the Tryhards then.

Your aim........ I feel you are experiencing input lag and are using hdmi cable.
Try this. Get on when you can, spawn a match, when on the field, move left stick. On any tv, you should move immediately. Next, move right stick. If you have input lag, it should take like a half second or so for the weapon to move on screen. If this is your case, do the following.
Check your tvs settings. Use gamemode, turn down all processing and crap, lower quality. All of it. If you still experiance input lag after this, don't use hdmi.
Try composite cables. Hope this helps.

Its a Japanese TV and Japanese internet, so pretty good. When I get lag its usually server side, but its only sometimes. I'll take a look at the videos today and try some sensitivity tweaks. Any recommended #s?
Also is there anything I can do about matchmaking? The whole not being able to join pub thing is a real downer, as well as the long queue for FW. Should I try changing my server from automatic to US or something? probably stupid lag though.... I played FF14 with my US buddies but had to use some IP routing because of that long transit time. |

Wanted to get on this topic this morning before school, now I'm back and pretty disappointed with the replies...
Join this Channel: Learning Coalition
Join this Corp: DUST University
While you aren't a new player you do seem to be rather casual. Not a bad thing, but I think most of the problems come from not being able to improve due to lack of matches, time and simply poor games. We all learn at a different pace but when in a group you pick up the pace. I highly recommend you join squads so you can actually try to improve while knowing someone's got your back.
Have you tried to do scouting or logi? If you can't improve your gun game try those roles as they don't often do combat and are pretty essential to win. You should also look into vehicles as well since they don't require gun game just ability to operate and invest in ISK. Just thought I'd add these suggestions since you seem to be focused on assault roles rather than support roles which are equally beneficial.
Also have you tried looking up tutorials/guides for registering the mic to PS3? It's a bit of a pain and maybe you're just not doing something right... Good Luck o7

I tried a few of the tips here. I got the headset working, thanks. Didn't think to look outside of dust514 to set up, and went and did in ps3 setting properly. People in learning coalition and squad helped me figure out the rest. Couldn't get PTT to work tho so i just leave it on.
I played on US server today for the first time, and it was nice. queue times under 1min usually, most of the players aren't that good actually so it was easier than asian pubs at least this time around. Also did my first squad. Still a lot to learn there but we won every match.
The lag was a little bad sometimes, but i'm guessing everyone got the lag, because people on comms were also complaining about it? Guess that's one of the asian server benefits. But I can't tell you how much better it is to not have to wait 5-10+ minutes per match now, thanks. I also got to use logi and focus more on team play being in a squad, was pretty nostalgic.
Turned sensitivity up, still bad at gun game but i'll work on it. I really like the mouse and its hard to stop using...
As for types, I'd like to try scout, but thinking about investing in the scout with the scan radius and being a scannet feeding map awareness, using cloak and SG and trying to not get noticed in buildings, but i'll need a lot more SP and ISK investment first. Logi is also good but I missed out on the whisper tool event due to work and crap queue times...so a bit sad there. Maybe if I can get a good apex and figure out what faction to try..i'll try it again.
Anyhow thanks for the advice and i'll keep steadily trying new things. |

Glad you had a great experience from the looks of it, just work on getting some decent advance fittings and the ISK should build up thus allowing you to get better equipment for that logi. Concerning the scout I would not recommend the cloak, too much investment not enough gains. I can't exactly provide advice on which scout to chose since I've only experienced the Amarr Scout(AmarrFTW), maybe check the locker room for the thread called "The Barbershop", heard that's whear all the scouts post.
Hope the following days are just as good. Also don't use PTT(works poorly).

Well, your experience sounds very like mine. I don't have 26m SP, but other than that it's very similar.
I will leave others to talk about most of your issues, but the RR I can definitely help with. It kicks like a mule. You need to aim using the sights (ADS) to stabilise it. You should only use hip fire for close range - anything distant, use the sights.
Better yet, don't use the RR at all, unless you have something like a magsec SMG for close range. That's what I do. The magsec is like a mini ARR. If you really want to use your primary weapon for hip fire, use an ARR. You can still aim using the iron sights and it works really quite well, much to the consternation of the target - most of the time they just stand there wondering where the firing is coming from. Even better with an RR using sights. :)
I ground CFW for months to get a State 'Hawk' Scout, State 'Rasetsu' Assault and State 'Samurai' Commando, in that order, plus the light and medium State Peacekeeper Marine Issue skins. That works out as 50k LP and 50mill ISK, but it's worth the effort.
Except maybe for the Samurai. I haven't really figured out how to use a Commando yet. I run the Hawk most of the time and the Rasetsu on occasion to support the rest of the team.
Don't use anything but an RR, ARR or SR with your Caldari Assault suits - there are bonuses that apply to those rifles with those suits. Also, the RR, ARR and SR has bonuses on the Caldari Commando suits. Always work with the bonuses. If you're going to use an AR, use a Gallente Assault suit.
I have virtuatlly the same issues with the servers, the Spanish players in our timezone - I'm in Australia (UTC+10) and usually play in the mornings, and can only find activity on the American server most of the time. The Asian server is mostly inactive at this time, so we would have the same issues. |

100 is good but only after you're used to it. If you're going to put it to 100, do it in stages. Stay on whatever you're on until it feels too slow, then increase it one step at a time.
Also, my ADS settings are a lot lower because that makes ADS more stable for accuracy, particularly on the SR. |

Yes, I'm in the Asian TZ. I have to set my server to America to get any matches.
I also get phenomenal lag due to being in Australia and therefore too far away from everywhere, and that makes the game play rather interesting at times, but it's still playable. |

Gaming on US server so much better:) Couple more questions: Any recommendation for 1st apex? I know some of you suggested scout but i have 0 skill in those trees. Max RR and SR working on Swarms next.
I have a lot of fun in calamando but the suit I run is about 9k a pop. I got shield extender bpo so it helps. I though about using samurai suit and putting in swarm instead of SR but militia swarm is sooo bad (2 shots per clip, need 3)
Should i just try to spend my isk on militia bpos and keep lowering suit costs or just go for the apex suite?
