Honestly, I was always the scrawniest kid in my P.E. class. Being 5' 11'' and less than 9 stone 5 pounds, I was underweight. My ribs protruded horribly. About two months ago I started working out. I had no gym membership (nor did I desire to get one; the image of embarrassing myself in a room brimming with bulging muscle-men did not appeal to me), nor did I have any weights, so I had to improvise.
When I started, I found that I was only capable of 2 push-ups before I simply physically could not do anymore. Yep, you read that right. 2 push-ups. I found that I could only hold myself in the push-up position for 60 seconds before I collapsed in a quivering, panting mess. Using the rucksack I use for sixth form, I would do dumbbell curls. My rucksack weighed a mere 12 pounds. I could only manage 3 sets of 12 reps before I could do no more.
I was ridiculously weak.
However, through much effort and willpower, and the help of this WikiHow article, I have improved greatly. My new push-up record - which I just set - is 29. With my 12 pound rucksack, I now do 5 sets of 20, then a sixth set where I work until failure, which is around about 40. The other day I stuffed my bag as much as I could with books, taking it to 16 pounds. With that, I did 4 sets of 12. The last time I tried (about a week ago), I was able to hold myself in the push-up position for 2 minutes 39 seconds. I am confident that if I were to try it again, I would be getting close to 3 minutes.
Conversely, I have very good lower body strength. I cycle every day, and having done karate for nearly 4 years, my core and legs developed from having to stay in grueling stances for extensive periods of time.
About 10 or so days ago I weighed myself and the scales showed 9 stone 5 pounds. I then made the decision to try to put on some weight. I don't know how much I weighed before I started working out. I'm now about 9 stone 8 pounds. My ribs are now somewhat less visible.
I'm hoping to get some dumbbells to work with for Christmas, so that would be helpful. Obviously a rucksack isn't the most ergonomic thing to be lifting.
Please, share your own progress stories in terms of fitness, be it weight gain, weight loss, weight lifting, body shape, or anything!

Mine is Go Kan Ryu, a hybrid of Goju Ryu and Shotokan (specifically Goju Kai and Keishinkan). It is primarily a non-contact style in the beginning, but it somewhat turns into semi-contact as you go up the grades.
That being said, one guy from my class got his nose smashed in by the old regional manager, so so much for 'non-contact'!

I've been feeling pain in my left lower back after doing push-ups. Today I took a mirror and placed it in front of me so I could watch my form as I did them. It looks like I'm going lower on my left side than my right. I'll have to try to fix that, and also to try to keep taut as I lower myself down.

Today I made a nice little compromise from the last time I did bicep curls.
Last time I did them, I stuffed my bag as much as I could, which took it to 16 pounds. With that I did 4 sets of 12, but the last reps were really, really sloppy.
Today, I added enough books to take it to 14 pounds. I did 5 sets of 12, then a set until failure, which was 17 reps for my right arm and 18 for my left. I'm pleased to say that my form was fairly consistently good.
Thanks OEK, I do believe you're right; I should try to avoid merely increasing repetitions, rather than weight.
I wonder if I would be able to lift a higher amount of weight when I get actual dumbbells. Right now I just use my rucksack, and I hold onto it not by the shoulder straps, but by the centre strap at the top, leaving all the weight hanging down and putting a fair amount of strain on the strap. Sometimes it swings if I go too fast.

One Eyed King wrote:You should do more compound movements like pull ups/chin ups. Avoid swinging your legs. Even if you can only do one or two. Just keep going until you increase your reps to around 10 to 14. That may take awhile, but it will engage more muscles than just your biceps, which at this stage is important. Plus, you generally want to work opposing muscle groups, so if you work chest with your push ups, you want to work back muscles with pull ups/chin ups. I would love to do that, but I don't really have anywhere suitable to do them.
I could maybe do pull ups on my door - which, incidentally, I tried today, managing about 3 reps, though I'm sure my form wasn't what it was supposed to be, as my legs were pressed up against the door - but I have nowhere I could do chin ups with a underhanded grip. It's really difficult to do them with a door frame, and it kills my fingertips.
I was considering getting a pull up bar that would fit into a door frame, but the ones in my house are simply not tall or wide enough for that to be a suitable option.
Any innovative solutions?

One Eyed King wrote:No playgrounds in your area? Considering this is something I'd like to do often during a week, I wouldn't want to have to go out to a playground just to do a few pull ups. Then there's also the thing about doing it in public. It's even worse than in a gym, where people actually go to work out, but I don't think I'd be comfortable with going to a playground.
Are there no exercises which could mimic chin ups? Pull ups aren't such a big problem because I guess I can just use a door, even though it's not fantastic.

Weekly Diet Record
Here is a record of what I eat over this week. Maybe I can learn something from it about where I'm going wrong.
~ = approximately
Monday:
Wake up at 13:00.
First eat ~ 15:30
Ham sandwich ~ 270 calories Chocolate cereal bar ~ 140 calories
~ 17:30
Steak Bakes x2 (pastry product containing beef & gravy) ~ 800 calories
~ 21:30
~ 12 southern fried chicken wings ~ 800 calories
~ 02:00
5 chocolate biscuits ~ 400 calories
Daily total ~ 2400 calories
I only ate so much because my goal is to on weight. Normally I wouldn't have had those chicken wings, and I quite possibly would have had a few more chocolate biscuits. And even then, that would have been more in a day than what I normally have.

I think I figured out why I'm going down more on my left side - thus leading to back pain- when doing press ups!
I do press ups in my room. My room is in such a way that I have... Half a carpet. The only space I have to do press ups is right where the carpet ends and the wood planks are revealed. My left hand goes on the carpet and my right hand goes on the wood. This means that my left hand is slightly higher than my left, so I have to go down lower to compensate! So when the floor is even, I go down lower on my left side.
I suppose a way to fix this could be to swap the direction I'm pointing each time I do a set.

New press-up record: 34.
Also, I'm particularly pleased because my previous record of 29 had been set with my feet apart, which I realise is kinda cheating. This new record was set with my feet together.

Sned TheDead wrote:If you feel like spiceing things up once in awhile, change the kind of exercise that you are doing.
Take pushups for example, everyone does slightly wider than your shoulders feet together.
So spice it up, stack your feet and stagger your hands, do diamond pushups (those get fun around 15), one handed (once you get there, fingertip pushups.
Just slight changes to a work out help keep you both interested, and stop your body from getting too complacent with one thing.
there ane nigh endless modifications to each exercise you can do, so find some ones that work for you, and run with it for a while :) I shall try, though I would probably struggle with doing even 5 diamond press ups, and I certainly can't do a one-handed one.

Today I'm trying to reach 200 press ups total. I'm doing them in sets of 20, and I'm on 114 so far! That 4 comes from one set where I just decided to try to do as many as I could, and I got to 34 - same as my old record. Though I'm certain that if I hadn't done all those other press ups, I could have easily smashed that and gotten past 40.
Feeling pretty awesome.

Aaaaaaaaand now I have pain in my right shoulder. Could it be because of bad form, or simply because I was not physically capable of doing 200 press ups in a day without sustaining injury?

As long as you aren't doing it every rep of a massive set like 40 to 200, you should be fine. Also, doing it from the side helps too, as turning your head to the side is much easier on your neck than lifting up your head. Oh, normally I just look down when doing push ups. It was just the time I had the mirror in front of me that I looked up.

Make sure you use proper FORM!!! ALWAYS DO IT THE RIGHT WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cause you may really hurt yourself if you don't. I do like to think I have good form though, as I understand that doing it with bad form is pretty much pointless. Elbows don't flare out, hands turned slightly out, hands directly below shoulders, keep yourself taut, don't let the hips sag, all that stuff.
I will record myself doing them so I can have a better look. It may be that I am still going lower on one side than the other. Or perhaps it was simply that such a big jump in number was bound to cause problems. I mean, the most push ups I'd done in a day before this was about 75. Today I went and did 200. I just hope that it's the jump that's causing the pain, rather than poor form. I haven't had shoulder pain before from doing push ups, so I'm hoping that it was just because I was unaccustomed to doing so many.

For Christmas I got a pair of adujstable 10KG (each) dumbbells. They're good, I can do 11 reps of bicep curls with them. I guess the ergonomics improved the weight I could lift, over my rucksack.
Push ups are coming along nicely. My form keeps getting better, and I keep going lower. I realise now that the form I was using when I set that record of 34 push ups was of $hitty quality. Doing the same quality of form as I was using that time, I comfortably did a set of 40 push ups yesterday. I just did a set of 30 push ups though with much better form, nearly nose-to-floor.
I'm considering starting going to a gym in the new year so that I can work on compound exercises like squats and deadlifts.
Still having difficulty putting on weight, even though most days I'm eating over 2000 calories. I've also incorporated fruits into my diet. |
