It will be much easier if you join that chat channel danthrax mentioned. Also this forum section is filled with great info. Find Kaze's post on helpful links for some pretty in depth reading.
To give you a dump of info here:
Core Skills. These are the first skills you should skill into. Under Dropsuit Upgrades, you'll find a LOT of skills under this tree, here are the ones to pay attention to right out the gate.
- Dropsuit Armor Upgrades: Each level of this gives you a 5% bonus to your base suit armor.
- Dropsuit Shield Upgrades: Each level gives you 5% bonus to base shields
- Dropsuit Core Upgrades > Dropsuit Electronics: Each level gives you 5% bonus to CPU
- Dropsuit Core Upgrades > Dropsuit Engineering: Each level gives you 5% bonus to PG
What this means for you is that if you got all of these skills to level 5, EVERY suit, even your starter fits, gain 25% to base armor, shields, pg and cpu.
Now shields and armor are obvious but why cpu and pg? First thing you need to learn in this game is Proto suit doesn't mean diddly squat without high grade mods to put on them. A Standard suit versus a Proto suit doesn't have any more shields or armor for the price tag. All it really gives you is more PG and CPU to put BETTER mods on to MAKE it beastly. Therefore, having that extra PG and CPU allows you to stack more and better mods onto your suits.
Now, level 5 of the above core skills is EXPENSIVE. It will feel like an eternity to get there. Your goal right now is to get those above skills to lvl 3 for now.
This will give you a good buffer up and then you can start tinkering with suits and weapons to find out what playstyle you really enjoy. Finding this out will greatly impact where you place the rest of your skills points.
Some Tips:
- Try to find like minded guys you like playing with and squad up. If you don't, I'm afraid you'll grow really angry of this game and leave. Don't jump into the very first corp to invite you unless you know them well. Lots of corps want you just so you can get taxed and pad their wallets.
- For right now, make sure you always have an uplink on any suit you go out into battle with. As a new player, earning WP and thus SP will be slow going. An uplink is always welcomed on the field and a great way to give you extra points.
- Piggy backing, do NOT throw an uplink facing a corner or wall. An uplink will spawn people IN THE DIRECTION YOU PLACED IT. This is a great way to annoy a lot of folks.
Good luck OP!
