There are many resources in the top part of this forum section.
Chat channel : learning coalition For general questions
Listen to the guys that talk about core skills first
I'll also send a donation when I'm on.... 4:00 dust time
I thought K/D padding was better than Kotex.

It will be much easier if you join that chat channel danthrax mentioned. Also this forum section is filled with great info. Find Kaze's post on helpful links for some pretty in depth reading.
To give you a dump of info here:
Core Skills. These are the first skills you should skill into. Under Dropsuit Upgrades, you'll find a LOT of skills under this tree, here are the ones to pay attention to right out the gate.
- Dropsuit Armor Upgrades: Each level of this gives you a 5% bonus to your base suit armor.
- Dropsuit Shield Upgrades: Each level gives you 5% bonus to base shields
- Dropsuit Core Upgrades > Dropsuit Electronics: Each level gives you 5% bonus to CPU
- Dropsuit Core Upgrades > Dropsuit Engineering: Each level gives you 5% bonus to PG
What this means for you is that if you got all of these skills to level 5, EVERY suit, even your starter fits, gain 25% to base armor, shields, pg and cpu.
Now shields and armor are obvious but why cpu and pg? First thing you need to learn in this game is Proto suit doesn't mean diddly squat without high grade mods to put on them. A Standard suit versus a Proto suit doesn't have any more shields or armor for the price tag. All it really gives you is more PG and CPU to put BETTER mods on to MAKE it beastly. Therefore, having that extra PG and CPU allows you to stack more and better mods onto your suits.
Now, level 5 of the above core skills is EXPENSIVE. It will feel like an eternity to get there. Your goal right now is to get those above skills to lvl 3 for now.
This will give you a good buffer up and then you can start tinkering with suits and weapons to find out what playstyle you really enjoy. Finding this out will greatly impact where you place the rest of your skills points.
Some Tips:
- Try to find like minded guys you like playing with and squad up. If you don't, I'm afraid you'll grow really angry of this game and leave. Don't jump into the very first corp to invite you unless you know them well. Lots of corps want you just so you can get taxed and pad their wallets.
- For right now, make sure you always have an uplink on any suit you go out into battle with. As a new player, earning WP and thus SP will be slow going. An uplink is always welcomed on the field and a great way to give you extra points.
- Piggy backing, do NOT throw an uplink facing a corner or wall. An uplink will spawn people IN THE DIRECTION YOU PLACED IT. This is a great way to annoy a lot of folks.
Good luck OP!

...Hmmm.
Lots of players seem dismissive when folks tell them "This EVE or Dust-514 game? It's weird and different from any of your other stuff---I'm serious, Dude---if you go into it with the same old ideas you have from your other games, you're not going to like EVE---don't try it that way"... It is hands-down the best advice anyone could give about these two games. I saw this cool sketch illustrating the OUTRAGEOUSLY high learning curve of an Eve game versus some other MMOs. It was a hilarious picture, that is brutal and funny at the same time... and most hilarious of all was that, it was supposedly drawn by one of CCP's own staff.
The learning curve is steep on this game. If you don't hack the idea and the curve, you won't be "ruined" or anything,... but you will always be blaming some part of the game as being broken, or all wrong, or stupid... usually blaming the guns. Don't try to push through this game with the same "gun is the tool" idea about combat we've all learned from other shooting games. Combat in these two games is not about the weapons, it's about the procedure for tackling the opposing players.
Social Interaction with other players is ALSO important to mastering this game. Being sociable with total strangers you meet while playing in the game (send a thanks-letter to the player who saved your life in the last match, praising a squad-leader for giving good directions) may or may not be easy for you to do in a game. But it goes a long way to building contacts you can get learning and protection from.
Finally, the game is so INTENSE, that it makes everyone very opinionated. Mostly, that is going to hurt your learning, instead of helping your learning. This Forum for instance is painfully drowning in opinions and arguments by players who misunderstand the game, but are full of ready-advice to you, Advice here is mostly "opinion", not fully reliable directions to follow.
I, for instance, mostly disagree with MOST of what's been posted here as advice. DON'T follow it all---it will cause you to spend a lot of hard-earned learning-points (the game calls them SP or Skillpoints),... and you will still end up being slaughtered in most of your matches. I have played for more than 2 years, and have NEVER raised my core skills to Lvl-5---it is not always necessary, and eats up point you could have used better somewhere else. Stay away from buying all sorts of outlandish items like the uplinks, etc, until you've played the game a lot, stayed close to buddies while they use the gear, and you get the hang of when and what version of each of these gadgets is truly useful. Unlike other games that give you the junk-guns so you can leave them behind and buy better guns,... this game gives you Militia Gear because it wants you to use them alot for your practice and learning---DON'T spit on them and start reaching for bigger guns right away.
In addition to Kaze's thread, please read my "Welcome to your ROLES in New Eden" thread. It will tell you about the kind of players you will meet, some of whom are more dangerous than you expect in a PS3 game.
And like I say, this game is DIFFERENT... so prepare to be frustrated and confused alot.
