Thank me later when it has out lived your PS3 and you are wondering what people were talking about when they said SSD did not last a long time in PS3s. |

Any will do for performance because it's already superior to the HD in the PS3. Don't go too crazy for size unless you need it for other games or price because who knows; we might get a port.
I have a PNY and it works perfectly fine. I get almost no lag and always load in and get halfway to a point before my teammates spawn. Also when there is a FR drop (which happens rarely) it's not quite as crippling.

Everybody I have talked to recommends Samsung SSD's. Dust has more problems than a SSD can fix though, so unless you play games with longer load times it won't be worth it from what I've researched.
If somebody bought one and isn't arguing in favor only to justify their purchase, I would like to hear how they feel about it. |

On the PS3 we're limited to the SATA I connection that the system supports. This limits the throughput(GB/second) of a SSD in a PS3.
Not sure about the latencies of the various SSDs but i'd say that any differences between makes/models would be vanishingly small given the platform and especially given DUST, but worth checking on when doing your research.

Definitely improves load times and the general smoothness of the game - if i had to go back to the old HDD i'd chose to retire from DUST, i don't have that kind of patience anymore.

I have been running on a samsung 840 for well over a year now. I run 2 of the same drives in my tower and the same drive in my laptop. You really can not go wrong with samsung when it comes to SSDs.
When it comes to Dust it does have a few hidden benefits. Thanks to the over whelming amount of models which have been piled into Dust there is a lot of switching going on in the ram. These models consist of tiny amounts of data meaning that they are not delayed by the sata I throughput speeds.
The advantage comes in the read times of the SSD itself.
A Western Digital 7200 RPM drive has a through put in the area of about 50 - 100 mb/s on reads.
A samsung 840 pro is in the area of 350 - 400 mb/s on reads.
The maximum throughput on sata I is 1.5 gb/s.
What this means is that with the much smaller amounts of data being exchanged for Dust you are in fact seeing some where in the area of a 150% gain in transfer times by maxing the sata I.
Why does this matter? Because since the addition of weapon based render ranges models are pulled into memory as they enter that range. Frame rate drops get caused by a combination of slower memory due to high load and by slower read times of the drive itself. |

$90?
I might order that when I get home.
I've wanted one for Arma and other games for a while now.
Screw the PS3, that thing is going in my PC.
EDIT: Might go for a 256 EVO over a 126 Pro. Depends on how much I want to run off of it. My OS for sure, and a lot of start up programs. Arma itself has over 30 gigs in between the base game and my mod pack. From this it also seems like the EVO provides slightly worse performance, but still doing very well.

I would recommend the 256gb 850 which is $131. The thing I have noticed with my 840s is that their consistency over time has been amazing.
I am currently running 2 840s in my PC, 1 in my laptop, and 1 in my PS3. I have had all of those in for about a year now and have seen no fall off on any of my devices.
Whatever samsung did with all of the 800s seems to have them out in front by far.
EDIT: I very highly recommend you always keep enough space on one for downloads which you can then transfer to a secondary HDD. The increased write speeds seems to make downloads run much faster thanks to the reduction of the amount of data which must be buffered in ram.
Just something to keep in mind for getting the most bang for your buck. |

Once you settle on an SSD, you might also want to get a portable USB hard drive. You'll have to make a 32GB FAT partition on it so you can back up whatever you have/want to keep from your PS3. You'll also need to download a copy of the PS3 system file to install onto the new SSD.
I have a PS slim (later model) and it took minutes to swap out the drives. It was a bit longer to build the system files and transfer everything back from the portable HDD.
It was totally worth it. Everything loads much faster, from the PS3 initial start up to any game I play. |

Sadly, the SSD hasn't helped my terrible gun game one iota. I do, however, get to strut around the warbage in pub matches, for about 10 seconds prior to the match starting.

Now I have a question as well. Why does anyone even need to buy anything to up grade their ps3 for one damn game? I played Battlefield 3 on mine which has a hell of a lot more going on in it than dust and never had a problem with the game. Seems Dust is the problem. I'll never upgrade this thing for one game even though this is about the only one I play LOL. I have a ps4 and waiting patiently for Fallout 4. |

With a ps3 any basic SSD will do as the PS3 will only be able to use some of its potential not all. I am not 100% sure but I highly doubt the PS3 can handle ultra high read/write speeds. But yes anything would be better than the standard equipment.

Unfortunately SSDs can only fix some of the issues that are caused by the limited technology of the PS3 in comparison to next gen consoles and PCs.
What you're saying is like saying "oh you broke your controller? you don't need a new one, just power on your machine and stare at your accounts."
There's this thing called a hardware issue with any type of computing device so some people need to replace parts. Why do you think Sony made it so easy to take the HD out and replace it? Because it's the one piece of the puzzle that is most likely to fail.
Unholy HateGore wrote:Now I have a question as well. Why does anyone even need to buy anything to up grade their ps3 for one damn game? Some people have a PS3 only for playing Dust, therein they want the best possible experience that they can get.
The issue of Dust being a problem is and isn't true. Part of it has to do with the amount of content and a regular hard drive isn't really fast enough to pull the data and load that data in comparison to an SSD.
The Dust/PS3 issue is two sides of the same coin, depends on how you look at it. You can either say that the PS3 isn't good enough to handle Dust, or that Dust is too complicated for the PS3. Either way, both arguments are correct but your position of Dust being amazing vs PS3 console is old and outdated is where your viewpoint actually lies

Make a folder titled PS3 <-- exactly like that Then another folder inside of that called UPDATE <---- also exactly like that Put the download file in the UPDATE folder and once you pop that SSD in, plug your Flash Drive in and power on the system to install the PSN operating system. why do you have to all that? i didnt have to do that when i installed the hdd thats in it in it?

I have a PS slim (later model) and it took minutes to swap out the drives. It was a bit longer to build the system files and transfer everything back from the portable HDD.

Have you ever replaced your PS3's HD before? If so, did you buy one specifically for a PS3 that came preloaded with the OS.

Regular HDDs are much much slower, it reads/writes its fastest when on the outer portion of the magnetic platter, but is at its slowest when using the most inner portion of the platter.
Regardless it will make a huge improvement, I recommend getting a Samsung EVO Series SSD, I've had no problems with my 840 EVO when I still had it in my PS3.
Everything will be faster after you install it, you'll love it. On Dust you'll get into the warbarrage before anyone else, everything will load faster for you.
Funny though cause in the PC world SATA 3 speeds have already been surpassed, people are putting M.2 SSDs in their computers now. It uses PCIe "lanes" instead of having to go through a chipset. Look at the available bandwith of PCIe v 3.0 x 4(lanes), look it up it's insane.

Upgrading hardware for performance isn't cheating, it's what any SMART person would do to enhance a legacy system for more optimal experience. Unfortunately SSDs can only fix some of the issues that are caused by the limited technology of the PS3 in comparison to next gen consoles and PCs. What you're saying is like saying "oh you broke your controller? you don't need a new one, just power on your machine and stare at your accounts." There's this thing called a hardware issue with any type of computing device so some people need to replace parts. Why do you think Sony made it so easy to take the HD out and replace it? Because it's the one piece of the puzzle that is most likely to fail. Unholy HateGore wrote:Now I have a question as well. Why does anyone even need to buy anything to up grade their ps3 for one damn game? I played Battlefield 3 on mine which has a hell of a lot more going on in it than dust and never had a problem with the game. Seems Dust is the problem. I'll never upgrade this thing for one game even though this is about the only one I play LOL. I have a ps4 and waiting patiently for Fallout 4.
But back to my statement of Battlefield. Why does it run fine and Dust doesn't? I think Battlefield is more complex even down to the graphics.

Woah a new theory to work with. Go outside with a long range gun and run forward. Simulated frame-rate drop. Do you know if that's a change that was made at some point, or rendering always worked this way?
Might also explain why I never seem to suffer from lag much - fkin scout lol. My optimal range isn't usually past 40m, and if it's anything to do with the current weapon I'm holding, it's usually 2.5 - 10m.

Battlefield is in it's 4th major iteration, and backed by a larger dev studio with experience going back a longer time. It's always going to be better optimised etc.
As for OP
Yeah Samsung works. PS3 limited by bandwidth of SATA I but it's not the bandwidth that makes a difference, it's the access times, and those will always be massively better than mechanical hard drives.

Not necessarily, if you look at battlefield maps they are a set size, where as Dusts maps go on and on and you can see other maps in the distance.
Then if you look at the amount of dropsuits/weapons/modules/vehicles and all of their variations (that are completely unnecessary) there is more content in Dust BY FAR as opposed to Battlefield. (Which is exactly what I meant when I said above that there is far more CONTENT in Dust)

Conversely, SSDs fix performance issues such as lag or in some cases frame rate (where applicable to drops from system performance/read issues from old hard drives)
SSDs, believe it or not, will eventually be incorporated into any computing machine that uses one because it is an optimized design in comparison to the magnetic Hard Drives that were developed back in 1956. Will it take a few more years for that to happen? Absolutely, however now you see that some machines come with SSDs already and usually the price of that machine is much higher than one with a simple HDD.
Its the same concept as choosing between a standard graphics card vs a graphics card with a GPU. The GPU is more optimized for performance.

Absolutely, however now you see that some machines come with SSDs already and usually the price of that machine is much higher than one with a simple HDD. Its the same concept as choosing between a standard graphics card vs a graphics card with a GPU. The GPU is more optimized for performance.
Dude. SSDs have been standard in gaming pc's for a couple of years now. The only 'lag' an SSD fixes on Dust is framerate drops. Also what on earth is a graphics card without a GPU? That's like, the most important part of a graphics card.

Though, no SSDs do not come standard in any new machine. HDD is still standard but you have the option to pay a little extra for that SSD.
As far as no GPU vs GPU goes, someone with no knowledge trying to buy or build a PC may or may not realize how important GPUs are.

What country are you from? If you're buying a gaming pc today that doesn't have an SSD you're getting conned. If it's only an optional extra it's a bit rich to call it a gaming pc in the first place.
I'm guessing you were referring to integrated graphics vs a graphics card? There is literally no such thing as a graphics card without a GPU.

If somebody bought one and isn't arguing in favor only to justify their purchase, I would like to hear how they feel about it.
The most concrete advantage I've noticed is initial spawn times, particularly in PC matches. Other than that, I've noticed very little effect. |

Match entry much earlier than non SSD players. This can easily be used to your benefit in almost every match.
Much more stability in the messed up maps. The Gal lag facility runs perfectly smooth for me. The MCC map generally only kicked people that did not have SSDs from what I saw.
Very slightly faster PS3 start up time and game initialization. You really have to look for it on this tho.
Less heat issues with the PS3. SSDs generate FAR less heat than HDDs. I have a theory that this attributes to stability over long grinds as heat is easier moved away from the critical components within the PS3s very tight case.
Minimal benefits but benefits indeed. How much you feel those are worth is up to you but with the drastically reduced price of SSDs compared to back when I bought them for my PS3, Desktop, and Laptop they are very well worth it. |
