Honestly, just go within your budget. Any will do for performance because it's already superior to the HD in the PS3. Don't go too crazy for size unless you need it for other games or price because who knows; we might get a port.

I have a PNY and it works perfectly fine. I get almost no lag and always load in and get halfway to a point before my teammates spawn. Also when there is a FR drop (which happens rarely) it's not quite as crippling.

Remeber - PS3 isn't use full SSD potential.
Whatever you bought is overkil.

Everybody I have talked to recommends Samsung SSD's. Dust has more problems than a SSD can fix though, so unless you play games with longer load times it won't be worth it from what I've researched.

If somebody bought one and isn't arguing in favor only to justify their purchase, I would like to hear how they feel about it.

On the PS3 we're limited to the SATA I connection that the system supports. This limits the throughput(GB/second) of a SSD in a PS3.

Not sure about the latencies of the various SSDs but i'd say that any differences between makes/models would be vanishingly small given the platform and especially given DUST, but worth checking on when doing your research.

Just make sure that if you get one on the lower side (under 100gb) you keep your PSN mailbox clean otherwise your system will be slower once you get within 75% max capacity. (Same concept as a PC if your HD gets too full)

Also, on the plus side, if Dust leaves the PS3 or your system has a power failure, you can always use that SSD as external storage for your PC

Once you settle on an SSD, you might also want to get a portable USB hard drive. You'll have to make a 32GB FAT partition on it so you can back up whatever you have/want to keep from your PS3. You'll also need to download a copy of the PS3 system file to install onto the new SSD.

I have a PS slim (later model) and it took minutes to swap out the drives. It was a bit longer to build the system files and transfer everything back from the portable HDD.

It was totally worth it. Everything loads much faster, from the PS3 initial start up to any game I play.

Don't backup the system, but you will need a Flash Drive. To download this.

Make a folder titled PS3 <-- exactly like that
Then another folder inside of that called UPDATE <---- also exactly like that

Put the download file in the UPDATE folder and once you pop that SSD in, plug your Flash Drive in and power on the system to install the PSN operating system.

You have to install the operating system. Basically PSN OS is just like Windows/iOS/Linux in that it is the whole architecture to even do anything.

Have you ever replaced your PS3's HD before? If so, did you buy one specifically for a PS3 that came preloaded with the OS.

Would you not be better off saving the money and using it on an operation to make yourself sound less like a tranny?

I believe the PS3 can only handle SATA 1 speeds, your random access times would still be faster, but you would be capped at SATA 1 speeds (143 MB/s transfer rate cause of overhead)

Regular HDDs are much much slower, it reads/writes its fastest when on the outer portion of the magnetic platter, but is at its slowest when using the most inner portion of the platter.

Regardless it will make a huge improvement, I recommend getting a Samsung EVO Series SSD, I've had no problems with my 840 EVO when I still had it in my PS3.

Everything will be faster after you install it, you'll love it. On Dust you'll get into the warbarrage before anyone else, everything will load faster for you.

Funny though cause in the PC world SATA 3 speeds have already been surpassed, people are putting M.2 SSDs in their computers now. It uses PCIe "lanes" instead of having to go through a chipset. Look at the available bandwith of PCIe v 3.0 x 4(lanes), look it up it's insane.

Woah a new theory to work with. Go outside with a long range gun and run forward. Simulated frame-rate drop. Do you know if that's a change that was made at some point, or rendering always worked this way?

Might also explain why I never seem to suffer from lag much - fkin scout lol. My optimal range isn't usually past 40m, and if it's anything to do with the current weapon I'm holding, it's usually 2.5 - 10m.



Battlefield is in it's 4th major iteration, and backed by a larger dev studio with experience going back a longer time. It's always going to be better optimised etc.

Yeah Samsung works. PS3 limited by bandwidth of SATA I but it's not the bandwidth that makes a difference, it's the access times, and those will always be massively better than mechanical hard drives.

You should all buy turbo controlers to go along with your SSDs. So you wont be as bad at da pew pew anymore

Match entry much earlier than non SSD players. This can easily be used to your benefit in almost every match.

Much more stability in the messed up maps. The Gal lag facility runs perfectly smooth for me. The MCC map generally only kicked people that did not have SSDs from what I saw.

Very slightly faster PS3 start up time and game initialization. You really have to look for it on this tho.

Less heat issues with the PS3. SSDs generate FAR less heat than HDDs. I have a theory that this attributes to stability over long grinds as heat is easier moved away from the critical components within the PS3s very tight case.


Minimal benefits but benefits indeed. How much you feel those are worth is up to you but with the drastically reduced price of SSDs compared to back when I bought them for my PS3, Desktop, and Laptop they are very well worth it.

seeing as price of SSD's is pretty high i just bought a 12gb super slim PS3. it was -ú75 pre-owned with a DS3 to replace my 8yr old trashed one. Just use it as a dedicated dust system
