Sorry to quote this again Aeon, this is not personal.
Aeon Amadi wrote:Thing is though man, we've reached the absolute limit when it comes to optimization. Like, there's nothing more we can do. Graphically, mechanically, we've optimized everything possible. Anything else and the game would.... Well, it wouldn't be Dust 514, that's for sure xD What do you guys and girls think could be gotten rid of that would still leave Dust as Dust? (Assume SKINs have been fully consolidated and powercores have brought the unique character models down to 4 races x 3 weight classes)
Here's mine: - Environmental particle effects from the mood variations. Not sure how taxing they are on the PS3 but at this point any gain that doesn't detract from gameplay would be a win. - Quantity of mood & socket variations and the impact it has on light and shadows. I'm making a bit of an assumption here but with the huge number of different mood & socket variations on maps, I doubt the lighting and shadows are baked in. Having a pre-set list of map, socket and mood combinations would allow this. - Number and quality of static objects & their textures. The details in the maps on Dust are probably the best I've seen on the PS3, but I wonder if CCP didn't push it a little too far? - Big 'decoration' stuff on the edges of the map. Again, maps look awesome but this stuff could probably be painted into the skybox.
I'll keep updating this post with other peoples suggestions. Make sure you speak up if you see something that you wouldn't want removed.

If it meant better performance, I'd be OK with any or all of the following:
* less pretty graphics / textures * simpler sound and visual effects * decreased headcounts in battle * smaller maps * a limited # of in-game chat channel subscriptions * mandated push-to-talk coms in battle * doing away with wasted space in the redline * fewer menu options available in battle * restricted chat channel access while in battle * being required to stock fits in advance of battle * socketed maps being converted to fixed maps * consolidating queues

Kero's list:
- Large Sockets (large structure installations). The medium ones will do fine. - Nanohive sound effects. That has been speculated to be a cause of framerate loss. - In-battle fitting screen 3D Models. Unnecessary. - For vehicle secondary turret operators, hardener glow of parent vehicle. - Geometric complexity, especially on large socket structures. - General graphics level. - 1st person view's own weapon on screen!

There is already an option to reduce the graphics in the settings menu in the neocom in DUST514.
We could expand on that feature by making the lowest graphics option severely simplify game textures for the map, vehciles and dropsuits, and small, meduim and large map sockets. It could also reduce special effect graphics for the weapon a player is holding, grenades, orbital strikes, and simplify the geometry of deployed equipment. |

I'm not one for vehicles, but I think they are like suits are: taking up unnecessary memory with how the game handles the tiers and the 3d models or something.
Vehicles need to be simplified with powercores or similar.
I don't recall anybody talking about applying the powercore idea to vehicles, but if they have and Rattati liked it, well... my rock was nice to live under, thanks.

The game could look like wolfenstein 3d or quake arena and i'd still be happy graphically, as long as it would improve performance. |

On your screen, you see your weapon. =P Your own shotgun, rail rifle - whatever.
It's big, complex and very detailed and animated 3D thingy.

Even though I'm willing to go at great lengths on sacrifices to improve performence, this is one thing I would NOT want to let go of: - socketed maps being converted to fixed maps
that adds so much replay value to the maps, meaning the need for different maps is so much smaller.
If dev's say that is the one of the biggest bottlenecks preventing smooth game, then I yield this.

Grass.. in a game where most of the content we want is not released.. why add this ?? - it looks like a bad pop-up book, as the grass randomly appears and stands up as you approach.
RDV.. I'd remove this altogether.. either make it so your vehicle deploys (reverse re-call) - If this is an issue, I'd go as far as only calling vehicles at depots.
Any map/socket causing performance issues, kill them with fire
Public Contracts.. removing this joke of a serch system and opening several lobbies. - Similar to Other Contracts, though each lobby could have meta/SP restriction + map/game rotation.
Well that was a surprise.

The lobby would have the secondary effect of letting players create balanced matches.
In a stomp -> struggling players would move to an easier lobby, dominating players would stay In an even lobby -> everyone stays because close matches are fun

Pay for a given contract could account for:
* Match progress (underway pay > new match pay) * Cumulative Mu and SP of opposition ("security rating"?)

Did you know that we have realtime reflections on some surfaces in Dust? One spot I know from the top of my head is the metal beams on the medium power core socket. The beams and some metal parts on the floor exhibit the same reflections our merc-quarter does. I saw the slides from a presentation on the effect that is likely being used here, and it appears to be a very efficient way of doing it, but it's still a huge waste of texture fill-rate and video-memory.
Same thing with dynamic shadows for static objects. Very useless.
The removal of some more turrets could actually really help performance, especially around some of the troublesome large sockets. They are animated and thus consume additional resources. I remember CCP Logicloop stating that the resources for animations were extremely limited. If the maximum number of turrets was reduced that could clear up some video memory.
I support the removal of RDVs. And MCCs. Since we are never going to interact with any of these in a useful manner we just don't need them. MCC health can be replaced by the PtU-mechanic from Acquisition. But please come up with some better end-of-match screens than "Defeat. More PtU."
Environmental effects should be looked at. There are a number of areas that have sound effects connected to them that could be removed. Also some graphical effects. Powercores have a funky red glowing plasma-effect on top of them that is barely visible from anywhere on the map at all yet is loaded and unloaded all the time. Just remove that effect from all places where it occurs (the weapons lab large socket comes to mind). That should save some of that precious video memory.
And finally, the Minmatar. Who needs them? Maybe we can trade them for some better shaders on Amarr armor. It's not shiny enough I tell you. And more lasers. Who doesn't like more lasers? |
