And it came from an unexpected source: http://community.eveonline.com/news/dev-blogs/tranquility-tech-3/
This is the relevant portion (The left side is the current specs, while the right side is the new specs):
Quote: DUST514 Proxy Node
4 x IBM HS22 - Intel X5687 @ 3.60GHz with 24GB RAM (1333MHz) ---> Will run on Eve proxies
EVE Proxy Node
5 x IBM HS23 - Intel E5-2643 0 @ 3.30GHz with 64GB RAM (1600MHz) ---> 6x IBM x240 - Intel E5-2667 v3 CPU @ 3.2GHz with 128GB (2133MHz)
That means that the currently planned Tranquility upgrade will change how we connect to Tranquility, and this implies they might even be doing away with the Battle Server system entirely in favor of their new tech that automatically routes traffic through the most direct route possible to reduce latency.

does this mean a one server for all timezones sort of thing?

As Cat Merc pointed out to us in Skype the other day, the actual distance from Israel to TQ is about 78ms. The rest of the latency comes from getting lost in hops through Europe until you finally get to TQ.

That should at least get people to chill out on that front. There's no way they'd bother mentioning Dust 514 as part of their hardware upgrade unless they were planning to keep it around for a while.
Let's just hope that's aimed at improving performance for the next platform. Reducing lag on the PS3 would be nice but hardly something to dance in the streets about.

Tl;Dr likefarm the OP people! I was pretty psyched to see it when I was going through the specs. Even if they haven't announced a port by then, getting on that new hardware should help to reduce lag and make the game more playable.

I read this too, saw that using the new hardware for DUST's TQ proxy means as others have said, no imminent plug-pull, but what I did not see was any mention of battle servers.
I'm of the understanding that DUST client uses TQ for inventory and transactions (market purchases, merc assets, fittings?, AUR tracking, I dunno, whatever) but battles have nothing to do with TQ. Hence battleservers. Without seeing a mention of these, not sure we're gonna see improvements unless the bottleneck is partly related to inventory etc.
Cynical perhaps...but I'd hoped to see mention of battle servers when I read that article.

Sorry to be a negative nancy here, but all I see is brand new piece of hardware for each and every existing piece of hardware except for the one thing that does Dust stuff. I'm sure that the new shared proxy node is more powerful than the two old individual ones combined, but if they did decide to pull the plug they no longer have the headache of re-purposing the Dust hardware to do something Eve related.
Something is killing new player retention.

This has zero affect on the outlook of Dust.
Tranquility is being upgraded and unless they want to pull the plug we have to be able to connect.
This also has no effect on the Dust battle servers as those are separate from TQ. TQ handles our logins, the market, corporations, matchmaking, and a few other things.
One possible positive out come is that we should see a few less of those pesky spinning circle screens that we all love so much.
I feel like the dedication of the number of servers that they have allocated points to a planned expansion as that seems to be very much overkill for our current average number of people online at one time. This is purely speculative. |

Not quite :)
1. Nodes will be integrated/merged -> we can use any node -> we can be at any far corner of Eve universe. 2. If so we can PC any corner of it... 3. If so :D this means that 2000 players of DUST will walk loney on planet/district... (maybe ship :) and if this is not ponitles... we will have new blood -> PC client (aka old Legion R.I.P.) or less PS4

This much is very true. TQ is a serious piece of kit as it is, perfectly capable of 100k+ players from what I understand from the Devs and technically classed as a Supercomputer in its own right.
And while it is true that Dust runs on separate battle servers, the pulling of info about your Merc's, assets, skill trees etc are pulled from TQ. Also, the chat system uses it, meaning that Eve and Dust players can communicate in real time.
So any upgrading of this systems is good news.

Fun fact:
In the past, CCP needed approval from the US Government to order certain server hardware upgrades because nobody believed that a game company in Iceland was ordering insane supercomputer level **** like a RamSan 500 for a multiplayer game server |

Also this will drastically improve our virtual server environment for example when we live migrate Virtual Machines across physical hosts.

You can see a lot of redundancy in the internal components, which is planned so we can maintain TQ by swapping a whole chassis out of rotation while EVE players continue to battle, trade, chat, manufacture, explore, and scam on the other 5.
Doesn't rule expansion out though!
It's also interesting to see that "Old TQ" is going to Iceland where they will host all the test servers. Now *that* makes me think there may be new things to test, which may imply expansions. But nowhere in any of this is Valkyrie mentioned. I assume that is gonna need a server or two...that could be an expansion that uses this hardware right there.

I've tried getting the old TQ to become my own Corp mail server so I'm not impacting on the Eve one anymore.
Oddly they claimed that having a supercomputer to deal with one players email was overkill....
I know, fekking outrageous.

But i wouder about improvements to overall CREST performance and things like loading suits/inventory at the start of a battle and also team rosters, etc. - I haven't read the article yet but it's waiting in my next browser tab ;)

I like this part the most: "In performance terms alone, with New TQ we are increasing throughput from 16Gbps to 30Gbps and maximum concurrent connections from 4 million to 24 million. "
Followed by: "deploying a new Intelligent Routing Platform to optimize BGP routing. This system will automatically test both latency and packet loss to every single player upon connection to TQ, running tests simultaneously over each of our connected providers and peers back to the player's ISP (Internet Service Provider). It will also non-disruptively switch each connection to the best available path."

This is purely speculative. It's actually not overkill because while the current TQ setup could easily handle 100k+ players logged in and flying around, it's when they start shooting at each other that all the extra power is required.
Recall that EVE needs to be able to support more than 4000 players shooting at each other all at the same time without any of the nodes crashing under the load. That's a pretty big deal.

Just the collision calculations alone (Is player 1's ship intersecting with any of the 4,000 other players plus 5 potential drones for every player on grid? (repeat EVERY SECOND FOR EVERY PLAYER)) would make most ordinary game servers **** themselves in terror
Now add several thousand dice rolls a second for the thousands of different modules on the thousands of ships in the scene with thousands of unique fittings and skill profiles, and you see why intentionally slowing the simulation down so the server doesn't commit suicide in protest was hailed as genius-level innovation |

That means that the currently planned Tranquility upgrade will change how we connect to Tranquility, and this implies they might even be doing away with the Battle Server system entirely in favor of their new tech that automatically routes traffic through the most direct route possible to reduce latency.
i really like what i see here give me a lot of hope and patience for ccp now that i know they are not just fuqing the dog these are really big changes changes for good of CCP respects for posting this

Massive space battles are cool and all, but Time Dilation can make them a bit of a chore.

I really doubt that TQ can be taken down by too many player actions being computer at once with how beefy it already is right now, and how much beefier they're about to make it.
No. It's great news less cobra server speak across different servers should equal much better performance.
