But i wouder about improvements to overall CREST performance and things like loading suits/inventory at the start of a battle and also team rosters, etc. - I haven't read the article yet but it's waiting in my next browser tab ;)

Tranquility is being upgraded and unless they want to pull the plug we have to be able to connect.
This also has no effect on the Dust battle servers as those are separate from TQ. TQ handles our logins, the market, corporations, matchmaking, and a few other things.
One possible positive out come is that we should see a few less of those pesky spinning circle screens that we all love so much.
I feel like the dedication of the number of servers that they have allocated points to a planned expansion as that seems to be very much overkill for our current average number of people online at one time. This is purely speculative.

I like this part the most: "In performance terms alone, with New TQ we are increasing throughput from 16Gbps to 30Gbps and maximum concurrent connections from 4 million to 24 million. "
Followed by: "deploying a new Intelligent Routing Platform to optimize BGP routing. This system will automatically test both latency and packet loss to every single player upon connection to TQ, running tests simultaneously over each of our connected providers and peers back to the player's ISP (Internet Service Provider).It will also non-disruptively switch each connection to the best available path."

This is purely speculative. It's actually not overkill because while the current TQ setup could easily handle 100k+ players logged in and flying around, it's when they start shooting at each other that all the extra power is required.
Recall that EVE needs to be able to support more than 4000 players shooting at each other all at the same time without any of the nodes crashing under the load. That's a pretty big deal.

Just the collision calculations alone (Is player 1's ship intersecting with any of the 4,000 other players plus 5 potential drones for every player on grid? (repeat EVERY SECOND FOR EVERY PLAYER)) would make most ordinary game servers **** themselves in terror
Now add several thousand dice rolls a second for the thousands of different modules on the thousands of ships in the scene with thousands of unique fittings and skill profiles, and you see why intentionally slowing the simulation down so the server doesn't commit suicide in protest was hailed as genius-level innovation |

EVE Proxy Node
5 x IBM HS23 - Intel E5-2643 0 @ 3.30GHz with 64GB RAM (1600MHz) ---> 6x IBM x240 - Intel E5-2667 v3 CPU @ 3.2GHz with 128GB (2133MHz)
That means that the currently planned Tranquility upgrade will change how we connect to Tranquility, and this implies they might even be doing away with the Battle Server system entirely in favor of their new tech that automatically routes traffic through the most direct route possible to reduce latency.
i really like what i see here give me a lot of hope and patience for ccp now that i know they are not just fuqing the dog these are really big changes changes for good of CCP respects for posting this

Massive space battles are cool and all, but Time Dilation can make them a bit of a chore.

I really doubt that TQ can be taken down by too many player actions being computer at once with how beefy it already is right now, and how much beefier they're about to make it. This much is very true. TQ is a serious piece of kit as it is, perfectly capable of 100k+ players from what I understand from the Devs and technically classed as a Supercomputer in its own right. And while it is true that Dust runs on separate battle servers, the pulling of info about your Merc's, assets, skill trees etc are pulled from TQ. Also, the chat system uses it, meaning that Eve and Dust players can communicate in real time. So any upgrading of this systems is good news.
No. It's great news less cobra server speak across different servers should equal much better performance.
