Just to comment on here, lots of people still play this game. We actually have rather good player counts on the weekends, even if the weekday numbers leave a bit to be desired. (As of this posting last 3 weeks have seen 3.2 - 3.3 k max concurrent)
This game is fun. It's not going to be fun for everyone but to those who enjoy it DUST offers something unique that no other Shooter has. It has a level of depth, customization, and spreadsheeting that you will not find in any FPS game on the market.
If I want to I can legitimately spend hours on fine tuning fittings, maximizing numbers, and trying to tweak every suit to be -just- right. Other FPS games I've played I could probably get a fitting together in ... less than 5 min, 10 if I'm lazy and never feel like I missed anything. DUST is the only game on the market that offers actual depth in fittings as far as I have experienced.
The other big draw to DUST (and just about every CCP game) is that it has unparalleled community feedback being incorporated into this game. The fact that we have groups like CPM / CSM is amazing, even if you do not agree with what they may say or do. Much of the tuning and numbers in this game has come out of hours and hours of community discussion as well as entire parts of the game are largely community driven. If Powercores ever make it into the game that will be a feature that was fully put forward by players, not to mention other parts of this game that are by and large by direct player input.
You may not agree that such player driven design is a good thing, and there are arguments in favor of that. To many people however this game offers a level of depth and real ability to make a difference in the game balance that no other game on the market offers.
The reason for statements like HTFU and the like is because DUST and EVE are brutal games, and in the end they will only give to you what you are willing to put in. With effort, teamwork, and a little math this game shines despite it's plethora of bugs, old hardware, and controller-breaking frustration.
