What is the best thing to spend it on? I don't want to buy gear or fittings that are expendable. Besides skins, what do people spend their aur on most commonly?
Everything in this game is expendable. It's just a matter of what you want to throw your money at. I like to buy key bundles with my Aurum.

Actually, if you want to get something worth your while, with just 5k aurum, go buy some torchflare kaalakiota forge guns and sell them back. If you have what's her name that gives you the 15% bonus to market transactions then it's worth your while, you can get about 1.5 mil or so isk out of the deal.
As far as boosters go you'd only be able to get 1 day, and IMO it's not really worth it.

As far as boosters go you'd only be able to get 1 day, and IMO it's not really worth it. The thing which you are referring to is the Jara Kumora 'market assistant'. Unfortunately, that actually costs AUR. I think it's significantly more than 5k, as well. Salvage sellback prices improve with loyaltry rank, as well, so I don't think this is the best plan. It's a neat trick, but it doesn't really work for newbies. Ohhhh right. The things I forget from lack of experience. I like to pretend that Jara is actually Siri in disguise.

I also bought boosters. They're a nice boost to your early game growth. You might consider getting a couple of BPOs if there's stuff you really like available in BPO format, but I'm not sure that's advisable because BPOs are extremely expensive and take a very long time to actually earn that investment back.
If you're going to buy AUR, I think I'd recommend buying a merc pack and a couple of boosters or perhaps skins. I know you use Gal med frames a lot so maybe a skin for that would actually be worth it if you like them. Or the Gal Assault Pack. It's $4.99 and you get 100 of each Adv and Proto Suit for Scout, Logi, and Assault. Plus you get Shot guns, AR's and PLCS as well as some mods. I think it would be a good investment since he runs the Gal med frames.
