This is commando training wheels You open up with the ion pistol to strip shields or straight up kill weaker suits, and then finish the armor with the assault combat rifle. This works against everything in the game. If you step up to the gallente commando, then this fit becomes Assault combat Rifle + Tactical AR, same strategy.
Another variant is the Tactical AR + Breach Submachine Gun. The breach smg does more dps vrs armor than the tactical ar when both are Prof V, so you wreck their shields with the tac and then smash their armor with the breach.
For whatever reason I've never opened up with my Ion pistol. Would always switch when my clip is out. But against certain targets this would make a big difference. Thanks for the tip! |

Also, these last 5 games everyone is in proto. Its not worth playing, toe to toe I can't win even if I land everything. Their armor and guns are just better. You should be targeting them from my 20gj particle cannons. They dont syand much of a chance with 2 complex dmg mods and matching heat sink. Its a helluva way to pass your time while leveling up. I guarentee you score higher and get less deaths.
Got a couple games in with ya yesterday. I was mostly on the ground, ended up feeling a little outclassed in FW. I'd love to be a dedicated gunner for you today. I could use the isk right now too. I started running militia soma tanks and love em. Been having great fun learning the vehicle nuances.
Invite me today and I'll gun for as long as I'm on!

Watch the video in my signature, it shows the strategy using a scrambler pistol. Same tactic with the ion pistol, plus you have a charge shot option. .| .| V

Sometimes between ScR and Rail Rifle, I feel like I get melted. I'm running G/I Assault suit with with about 490hp and whatever the standard shield amount is.
In my experience I'd have to list them like this:
Rail Rifle Scramble Rifle Assault Rifle Combat Rifle
I can drop weaker suits very fast with my AR but sometimes against equal suits and same level weapons, the Rail Rifle just puts me to shame. How does everyone else feel about rifles?
I'm curious about the general consensus, not bashing on anyone rifle or anything.
Speaking from experience of trying them all for lengthy periods of time, it really depends.
For Gal Assault, you'd be best off with either Assault Rifle (or one of its variants) or the Assault Rail Rifle. I recently put the ARR on my Gal Assault and I love it, however I'm so used to not having a charge up (though it is minimal) and it makes me miss my Breach AR.
Totally up to you though. I will say the ARR REKS and the Assault Rifle takes actual skill to use, you have to pay closer attention to your HP when in gunfight.

As a Gallante you should be dying more to the ARR. It is meant to eat armor. The kill feed shows the mix pretty well. Right now the power level is: 1. Scramblers by a far Margin 2. Combat rifles 3. RRs, More appropriately the ARR as the RR itself is not very strong. 4 ARs, way behind the rest.
For you as a armor tanker you probably do feel that the RRs are tough, because they are meant to be against armor suits. As you get more SPs and develop into more suits you will have more options to counter play whatever the other team is using. |

My power rankings would go like so: Tac Scrambler (on amarr assault) Tac AR Laser Rifle (on amarr assault) Ass Scrambler (on amarr assault) Ass Combat Rifle (on min assault) Tac Scrambler (non amarr) Ass Combat Rifle (non min) Ass Rail Rifle Ass Scrambler (non amarr) Assault Rifle Breach Rail Rifle Laser Rifle (non Amarr Assault)
**** I dont use very much these days so its not on the list: Breach/Burst AR Burst CR and whatever else I might have missed. |

Grabbed these numbers from protofits, so I'm not certain they are 100% accurate. The CR remains incredibly easy to fit while the ScR is the most CPU/PG hungry bastard.

It's hard to say really, I always go by what your fighting at that moment and how laggy the battle is.
If you want to be fast than the mintard/combat rifle works awesome.
Casual Cruising....def the scrambler
Fighting a team of bricked out peeps with lag....gal assault with the good ol AR
I do see a lot of people running the gal assault/assault rail rifle combo....Rail rifles are pretty nasty, but to each their own.

Rail Rifles surprise me the most. If I take a SR charge up shot as I swing out around a corner to square off, I don't really expect to walk away from that one victorious unless they are lower mu.
But the rail rifle has got me ducking behind cover after .5 seconds of taking fire. Even spraying as I run around between things can take me down to under 50% and they never had a solid bead on me.
Now here's a question: I've been recently upgrading my armor systems, handheld weaponry and drop suit engineering and electronics skills. I've got everything to level 3, except electronics and engineering which are at 2.
I've started to experiment with reactive and ferro scale plates over my heavy basics. I've come to a point where I feel my slow strafing is sometimes the reason I'll lose a gunfight, as they strafe really fast and I can just tell I'm not hitting them well. Meanwhile I can't strafe as wide or fast so they kind of dance around me.
So I made the switch to reactive plates. And I did worse! Worked on my strafe skills for 2 days of gaming only to have some of my worst games ever! I've lost so much ISK the past 2 days that I might just go back to my original build. Currently it is:
Assault G/1- Series
GB-9 Breach AR Ion Pistol
Locus Grenade R-9 Uplink
Enhanced Armor Repairer Enhanced Armor Repairer Enhanced Armor Plate Enhanced Armor Plate Enhanced Reactive Plate
Basic Light Damage Modifier Basic Light Damage Modifier
With 170shp on shield and 564ahp and 18.00hp/s repair rate I feel like I should be doing better than I am. Feeling out kitted though. What do you guys run for assault suits? |

Same pretty much Scale / vanilla plate, dual repper and pill (green/ red) Dmg in highs or buffer. If you want to wreck with the ar get into range and ads with the burst variant while feathering. Youll get kills a plenty. Pair in with a flaylock for scouts and finishers.
It's hard to beat up hundreds of armor piercing bullets using only your face...

I've yet to try the burst variant AR. I like the Breach alot and dislike the normal AR because it just doesn't kill fast enough. It's like shooting bbs at someone, they run away fairly unharmed.

I was just doing my bimonthly perusal of the Dust forums for old times' sake and saw this thread. Since I really like weapon balance discussions I thought I'd chip in.
How semi-auto (and maybe burst) weapons work in Dust is fundamentally broken. This is the basic model:
1. The weapon is designed so that, were it fired full auto, it would absolutely dominate with much more DPS than full auto weapons like AR 2. To balance for that, the weapon is gimped to semi-auto, so in practice most players will only manage similar DPS to full auto weapons.
This is terrible design, for two reasons:
1. It is obviously open to turbo controller abuse. 2. It bears no relation to the real world purpose of semi auto (and burst), which is to reduce the recoil and bloom from full auto and/or conserve ammunition. No actual military weapon manufacturer ever said 'this weapon is a bit too good. We'd better gimp it with semi-auto'. Nor would any manufacturer in New Eden.
A much better model, used in Planetside 2 (which I play now), is this:
1. The weapon is designed so that, were it fired full auto, it would match full auto weapons. 2. Semi auto or burst is provided in order to control recoil, etc, so the weapon can be used over longer distances, at the cost of short range effectiveness.
This is a pretty basic feature of weapon balance that Dust has got wrong from at least the days of TAR dominance, and continuing to the present day ScR. A semi-auto weapon using a turbo controller (or having the trigger spammed at the max fire rate) should NOT out-DPS a full auto at close range. If it does, that means it dominates at close range and long range, and the weapons are seriously unbalanced. |

Gal assault was my first suit. Year and a half experience. I'm a Gallente loyalist. If you don't care for the AR playstyle then don't read.
Here's what you need to know about you the gallente. Gallente weapons never fail you. You fail the Gallente weapons You can't out tank the amarr You can't beat the minmatar in a race. You can't hope to have shields of the cadari . **** caldari because ccp decided they are at odds with the gallente .
However you can make an solid solo suit with enough health and regen and speed to stay alive and help out. You're the best repped solo ( only by like 3 when compared to amarr ). You're tied for the second fastest assault with caldari. You have solid armor and a slight shield buffer.
Gal assault is all about maneuverability/positioning and dishing out constant damage while absorbing what you can rep. There are lots of ways to fit it. You can beat any other rifle , its just a matter of knowing how to play them into your AR. Its all about preference when it comes to the AR you use. Knowing how the variant mimics the vanilla version lets you fit and play according to most any situation.( TAC to scrambler. Burst to combat rifle. Breach to rail rifle)
The AR has beautifully well rounded stats, its easy to use , and it has a lot bullets. Its only shortcoming is range. The AR has an optimal range of 45ish. TAC has the most range 65ish, burst is second, breach and regular are the same. Dps from highest to lowest is TAC burst AR breach. Still comes down to preference and situation, but all are solid variants.
There's a lot to learn. Just know the racial way is a hard one.
While slow to anger and occasionally indecisive, they are also capable of harnessing enormous resolve when truly tested.
