In order to make the current gameplay more unique and less stale, what long-established gameplay mechanics would you be willing to rebuild and then learn over again?
I've been thinking along those lines quite a bit myself lately. I think one of the problems this game has in retaining new players isn't just the matchmaking or the poor performance, but the fact that when you look at it, there isn't a lot about Dust that really sets it apart from other shooters in a gameplay sense. There are plenty of high-health strafe-shooters, plenty of combined-arms (vehicles and infantry) shooters, plenty of tactical-shooters, and most of those have some element of loadout customization as an element.
So rather than brainstorming new stuff to put into the game, let's look at it like CCP did EVE after the Incarna blowup in 2011. What established mechanics would you change or improve to shake things up and make the game exciting not just as a concept, but to actually play?

Actual eve/dust integration that would make dust a truly epic game .
Unfortunately people want their pointless little scrimmages in mh and no depth.
If only the average duster realised the games potential. Unfortunately they want to be mh space kings, a tiny section of New Eden, pointless and not much use either.
For the game to truly get great, dusters need to get re acquainted with the idea of being a merc. Capsuleers already run the show and the game would be far better if we stayed on that initial idea.
It would be better in too many ways to type and it would not be fully understood either.

The only problem is back when that was the idea of the game, it generated a lot of negative publicity in the form of people seeing it as Console gamers being used as peons for the "PC Master Race". I wouldn't be surprised if that was a big part of the paradigm shift toward the only interaction being orbital strikes.

It started off a truly epic idea didn't it, where we would be mercs stepping into New Eden, the capsuleeers world. We looked forward to joining it and being part of it, so epic.
Ended a generic hitcan shooter with timer sorted matches, nearly no integration either and lost most of its players who held on to, and understood the unique and amazing vision it started with.
Some great technical feats that i appreciate but the fattening of ccps portfolio does not mean anything to the players.
A really nice level of customisation and leveling skills that is also ver unique, squandered on a total lack of ground breaking content beyond ob's *slow clap*.

Movement mechanics. You should have a mass stat from which speed, sprint speed, jump height, strafe speed, stamina use, etc. is determined. Armor plates would affect mass. This would be calculated in the fitting screen and the values cached, so it shouldn't affect performance.
Capacitors for suits and vehicles.
Best PvE idea ever!

I'd actually like to see it become a high health strafe shooter, they said the ttk was never right because their hit detection was so bad, but the game was a lot more fun when getting shot from behind wasn't the end of the story.
You say there are plenty of high health shooters, but this is the only one i've seen that even comes close to what i think of as high health.

I i could realistically change 1 thing, it would be that only suits and weapons of the empire You're fighting for in fw are allowed. Whether its std, adv, proto, or actual fw gear.
Equipment would be universal.
It would create balance issues and it doesn't even fit with eve but i think it would be really cool.

Maps, shifting the sockets and the overall layout to put less emphasis on low mobility meat grinder maps which reward 'zerg' tactics and more of a focus on diverse game play and the need for dynamic (i.e. non-static, homogenized or monochromatic) tactical game play.
Allow teams to play for the win without a pure focus on camping the objective (or spawns).
Improved spawn points so camping CRUs and the red line aren't so tactically rewarded. Alteration of the red line terrain so that there is no shooting vantage within the red line.
Break KDR down into it's more specific an accurate sub-parts and remove the misleading catch all that is current KDR.
Add secondary (and possibly tertiary objectives that effect in match game play by applying buffs and or debuffs to specific aspects of play (this statement is left vague because ideally there would be many of these with a wide range of effects).
Expand trading to be a true market and add a meaningful impact to location both in and out of battle - with the possible exception of pubs. (This is not directly an in match mechanic but it can directly effect many in match dynamics)
Revamp the rewards system to include more granular awards such as 'best in class' for a specific tactical action, award playing for the win, add a 'rewards decay' system where by inaction reduces base payout but players being added to a match late are also no longer punished for being placed there.
Improved mobility options decreased degree/frequency of "bullet time" mobility side effects and pop-up "gotcha" game play.
Addition of diverse planet types with environmental effects that alter the tone/tempo of match play. (Add functionality to the Warbarge table which shows not only the map prior to deployment but also the environmental effects that will be active)
Fundamentally alter PC map rotation so that no map offers more than 40% of objectives present within a single socket. Add a stronger aspect of location so that districts are not just labeled by name but more meaningfully effected by proximity (and more customizable by their owners in ways that effect the advantage of primary battle doctrines etc)
Increase TTK so that players have more time to react when engaged (also scale the value of H & L slot mods such that mods outside of raw dps and HP are more desirable, thus opening up further in match diversity).
Increase the diversity of racial weapons offerings, while also balancing the racial weapons themselves (or a minimum the rifles) around being optimal on their racial assault frames, rather than the 'highly effective on every suit that can fit it' modality we currently have.
Expand the options and implications within the eWar system to make it less binary and more meaningful (eWar could be about more than simple TacNet visibility in a "yes/no" state.)
Improve/expand the Corp and Alliance UIs so that Dust players do not need EVE characters to use the majority of the features. Add elements such as the ability to grant custom titles and medals, as well as Corp/Alliance Armories, saved and sharable fittings lists. Corp and Alliance level daily/weekly/monthly missions. Add game play elements to the NPE, include things like fights vs Drones and a shooting range with data feedback to test fittings.
Decouple equipment bonus types from racial buffs, support players should be choosing how they would best like to run their support actions (as the assaults do via rifle types which all fit the same fundamental role) not which support action they will have skill support for.
Streamline the skills system so that even discounting unlocks every level of every skill provides some value.
Add inertial mechanics such as bullet drop, player momentum, and air born player recoil (minor for some weapons, getting larger for higher alpha weapons and topping out for AoE weapons).
Apply eWar footprint spikes and troughs based on action type, and weapon used (not just if it's being fired but also what is being fired).
That's what I come up with off the top of my head (oh and fill out the LP stores so FW can be a livable game mode in and of itself) apologies if it's a bit disorganized I literally just typed it up as I thought it through so it's sort of a stream of consciousness list of things I'd like to see polished. No promises I didn't omit, or repeat, certain entries.
Cheers, Cross

for me it would be probably the gap between players who've just started playing and those who've played for years. i know the game should reward loyalty and experience but its so difficult to compete i know this very well.
my main psn account got hacked a few months ago therefore my dust char was lost, an account with over 40+ sp and 200+ million isk
when i lost the psn i lost that account i had to start over new psn new character but i could never compete like i use to i didnt have more than 20 dropsuits which i could use for any given situation. i struggled alot and wished i could get that account back until i decided to check out when that account was created i then stumbled across an account which was my first ever character. i then asked ccp to reinstate it and here i am using it, it had 18 mil sp but thats alot better than 500k sp.
when i had to restart and regain what i once had there was not a day i didnt think about quitting this game imagine what its like for a new player they have nothing to lose by uni-stalling this game of there ps3 it would just be one of those **** games that they've tried and quit. i on the other hand could not bring my self to quit id played this game for almost three years and made friends, but a new player...
also have you ever seen a frontline suit that you almost killed and there retreating and you suddenly have this impulse to go after him or her because you know its an easy kill if it where a proto suits youd probably be more cautious but when its a frontline suit all you see is your name in the kill feed.
i dont think that thats right, i dont think new players should be deadly straight away but they should at least be able to compete. whyd you think they hover around the installations because thats when they can actual kill a mercenary in proto or advanced suit.
perhaps increasing the amount of sp new players start wit at least so they can get an adv weapon dropsuit and some advanced modules, i dunno though

^ this is GODLY Slow this clap down for the man.
Incorporation of more eve components. We are limited with the technology that already exists in New Eden. If they gave us more of those mods this game could be epic.
Also they need to fix the spawn timers (in all honesty). How are we expected to get anything done if we are spawning on a 15 second uplink, 10 seconds in and it's taken out. Spawn on the next, again 5 secs in it's gone. I've been in matches where I've literally taken a minute to spawn (trying to bring better links out) but just couldn't make it all the way. There shouldn't be so much of a time penalty to spawns.
Also, I think it would be a great idea to make tiered battles as many have suggested before.
New Player matches (only available to players with UNDER a certain amount of SP.)
Casual Play matches (less intense, more used for people who aren't exactly up to going toe to toe with some of the vets)
Vet Play (intense matches for those who want the rush of epic battles where you may not win, those of us who don't just hop out of battle when a challenge comes along)
There are so many good ideas floating around especially ones involving sticking to lore specifically. It's just a shame CCP doesn't have the manpower to make it happen.

I think spawning mechanics is rather high on the list for me.
By that I mean both the initial deployment and respawning during the match. Even Battlefield 1942 and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory had this figured out. That was 13 years ago. |

I think we need to trash match making entirely and go with fully custom lobbies for pub matches. FW and PC would remain as they are.
Some options that would be really cool for custom lobbies:
+/- 50% jump heights
+/- 25% damage
SP limits to enter (great for newbies to lock bullies out)
Meta limits
Map selection / rotation
Squad limits (2/4/6)
Match size up to 12v12 (4v4 6v6 12v12) This would make 16v16 a unique aspect of FW and PC.
Vote kicks
Other things I can not think of at the moment but you get the idea. Yes, these are basically a copy of a PC lobby shooter but that is proven to work. The randomness of FW and the high organization of PC along with the higher team count would then provide something actually unique to do.
Remove NPC orbitals from FW. -- Fix orbital timers for Eve players assisting in Planetary Conquest.

The HUD
I would love to see the text info displayed with symbols instead of words.
For example, advanced suits would have a triangle next to the health bar, prototype would have an X (just as they have in the marketplace)
Different symbols for the different types of suits to quickly tell from a distance where your heavies are, which direction to run for nanohives and healing, etc.
Finally, different colored percentages to tell you what efficiency your weapon has against the specific type of health type you are damaging. A scrambler would have green numbers when looking at someone at full health (damage against shields), but getting down to armor would turn the number yellow. Aiming at a tank would show red or dark orange numbers.
And all of this info would be displayed near your crosshairs, NOT down in the corner

Personally, I'd want to see a different HUD color and construction based on race. As an example, Gallente with mainly circles, Caldari with straight lines and hard edges, Minmatar with lots of intersecting odd angles, and Amarr with sweeping curves and some religious iconography.

Id set the game back to its roots. Start from there.
