SO, My original thread about the DUST fixes got quite a bit of heat from people smarter than me, note that those were merely ideas and pure guesses in that topic and I am not the smartest person playing this game by far, so I am making a thread on the possible port to PS4 - I don't wan't it to be another one of those really stupid 'port it to PS4' threads you'll see pop up every so often but I won't say straight up 'port it' these are suggestions, facts and opinions. list form.
1. Porting (Now) is technically impossible, and the PS3 only agreement CCP has will be ending later this year (The exact date is somewhere in the forums) so afterwards it will be possible for a port.
2. CCP has VR & UE4 experience but it is unconfirmed what exactly all they have covered in UE4, the VR aspect is certain. UE4 is supposed to be easier to use from what I hear and has many more possibilities within it, I am pretty sure it would run DUST smoother, but I have no experience, and have not seen game-play (Of any sort) on UE4.
3. The old coding the original DUST coders put there is a massive mess, old versions of DUST had it, and it still has it, and that is the majority cause of frame-rate drops, the auto cache clearer I suggested in my other thread would take quite a bit of coding itself to implement and would only be a slight frame rate fixer, in particularly laggy maps there would still be frame drops and rubber banding, so it is almost mandatory for DUST to be reconstructed from the ground up, say LEGION (The YouTube video I saw at least) I hope uses its own base code. Sure using the old DUST code would be easy but.... ******** beyond measure.
4. in the reworking of all that old code, visual effects and the MCC could be redone as well, basically the little things that aren't getting much attention but should can get it's proper coding and visual effects.
5. Why PS4 and not PC? well it's pretty simple, PS4 is filled with actual gamers and advertisements will be seen not based on what you look at but rather just put onto somebody's TV screen in multiple places, dramatically raising the player base to games much like defiance or planetside 2, DUST falls into a very unique category for being a shooter, it is generally unique while in fact it is not, but it seems like it.
just some suggestions and facts. feel free to discuss, I hope I get less bad comments here because I did not have too much backing behind my last OP and was called out on it, and I understand why. feel free to comment here though. |

Their team is small, is what I hear a lot when I ask why they are not fixing or interacting with the community.
What makes you think they have the manpower, time, resources, or skill to even port this game to the ps4? I also only say ps4 because, screw the pc.
If they could have re-worked the coding they would have done it a long time ago and implemented it.

People hoping for a port can't see the truth of the staffing situation in Shanghai.
Gunjack took those of the people they didn't fire, not counting the at most 10 people still working on dust.
CCP gave up on making a second attempt at an FPS. They won't tell you that because they hope to still sell aurum until they shut this pig down.

What a lot of people who say "the code's a mess. Start from scratch." don't understand is a lot of that "mess" is bug fixes. If you start from scratch you're going to be creating a new game that's going to be a buggy mess at launch. The way to do a port properly is to refactor the existing code, piece-by-piece and clean it up as they go along. If CCP tells you that they rewrote it from scratch, everyone should be very concerned.

Sorry but there is a whole lot of nope in this post.
1. By almost all accounts the contract expired in May of this year. Confirming that is just as likely as confirming the actual details of the contract.
2. Making a little mobile game using VR and UE4 hardly constitutes the experience necessary for an attempt at a triple A title on any console. Don't get me wrong its a good starting point but really not even one worth discussing.
3. Who is to say rebuilding from the ground up would not just result in spending millions of dollars to end up with a whole different pile of problems. (Hint: IT WOULD) Dust being a mess from the start thanks to the whole carbon / ue3 debacle sucks but starting over is almost never an option specifically at this stage in the game. We saw very clearly that even Legion was just a copy / paste of Dust with some major work done on top thanks to not having to deal with the PS3 architecture.
4. This is whatever. Hardly an area for focus when we still have play ability issues. "If it looks pretty it works" is not a true statement and never will be.
5. I am seriously resisting the urge to rage on this one. I will let someone else rip on that statement so that I do not end up ranting.

Fan boys will come a long and tell you that the developers were working on Gunjack in their free time.
That may have been an acceptable excuse before CCP started posting jobs specifically requesting VR experienced UE4 developers but it really is not now. From the outside looking in it would very much seem that CCP is absolutely done with anything that is not Eve or a random VR project.
I will give you a hint CCP, VR + terrible frame rates is not only terrible but could actually turn dangerous.

Ya ya ya.
In the meantime let's continue to profitably develop Dust on the PS3 until the product is as refined as possible. You really want to port Dust now to PS4 with all its current bugs and glitches?
PS: The original plan for Dust was to be cross platform between PS3 and XB360, but unfortunately legal issues with Microsoft prevented it.
We should make a strong push for that to happen on the current Gen, and settle for PS4 exclusive if that fails.

Bugs only come from both lack of experience and skill. You may get some bugs in the game anyways, but you can avoid most of the ones from the Dust off you had a team that actually knew what they were doing with their current tools, I would assume.

except ccp arrogance kills any chance at a ps4 port
i.e. no mention of a kickstarter
rebuilding dust 514 code?
hell noooo!
better to go with blank slate
i.e. set a simple goal 60 fps on ps4
begin by saying its in beta and a work in progress
start with just one basic scout suit, one basic assault suit and one basic heavy suit, basic logi one basic color
one basic version of ar, laser, md, smg, shotgun, hmg, sniper, swarm, forge gun one basic color
one map
one basic lav, tank and dropship and one basic color
24 versus 24
fund the game by leting folks pay for custom name plates on vehicles, custom colors on everything
game will evolve from there by being funded |

Developing for a console isn't as easy as CCP saying "ok we're gonna put DUST on PS4" there is a lot of red tape and jumping through hoops to make it a reality, even down to using game engines on different formats can be a hassle (although Unreal has supposed to been made freely avalaible without hassle now) all this adds to cost and there is also Planetside 2, Warframe and Destiny on PS4 already which people will play more due to the horrible reviews DUST got when it launched
Developing for PC allows CCP a lot more freedom to develop it as they want. they're not restricted by Sony and programming is easier. not only that but the 600-700k EVE players who might have ignored dust because of being on a console, can now have it on their gaming rig running alongside their EVE client(s) most EVE players will have multi screen setups so they can interact far easier.
CCP could build up a nice playerbase on PC, shake off the negative image the media and even playerbase has of dust and in a couple of years when they have a good game, they can look at moving to PS4. just like Sony did with PS2
Please fix my C-II hitpoints!!

then the feedback gets incorporated to the new build

It's too late for the PS4. If they try porting there, it'll be just like Dust on the PS3 and it'll hit at the end of the console's lifespan, so we'll be back where we started.
Consoles are becoming more and more like PCs, and therefore less and less relevant. The current plan is to go PC, which is the best route.

I think the reason that they opted to not go for the PS4 version of the game in favor of the PC is two fold: a) how many agreements are needed for a console release vs a pc release b) no hardware/software restrictions (pc) vs hardware/software designed for a given console
For a point of clarification on the XBOX360 version of Dust514, CCP wanted both Dust514 and EVE Online on the same server. To that end Microsoft said NO, and Sony didnt really care at the time. Having both games on the same server allowed for easier Faction Warfare on planets as long as pilots that were fighting on you're side were in orbit.
For the record, the Personal Computer suffers from a 2-yr software lag. Which means that the software being released currently is designed for hardware from two years ago |
