A short video to set the mood of this post.
Transhumanism is a movement to better the human condition. The human condition is what makes us human: our physical limits, mental limits and even our emotional constraints. They make us who we are and as a species we strive to surpass them everyday. We do it everyday through technology. Glasses, implants, drugs and even shoes have all been designed to help us surpass our current limits. Though, right now it is only acceptable to use technology to increase our abilities in areas where some of us(glasses), or in the case of clothing, all of us are deficient.
Though, we are in the process of biomedical revolution. Deaf people are hearing for the first time. This seems impossible though it's happening. People are seeing for the first time.
Though, right we are trying to fix deficiencies. We are only trying to shift disabled people up to the average limit of humans. Soon, we will come to the point where we will be able to go further than the current human condition.
What about the day when we will be able to increase vision to 20/2 instead of only reaching 20/20? What about the day we can take drugs to keep us awake for five days without any drawbacks? What about the day we can change the genes of humans before they are born? What about the day we can replace your arms so you can lift a sedan single handed? What about the day we can replace anyone's legs to make them faster than Usain Bolt?
This isn't science fiction anymore. These things are happening, and soon. The question is how will we as race react? Do we embrace surpassing human limits or do we shun it?
My questions are:
Is it ethical for us to better the human condition through body modification? And if it is, is there a limit? Is there a line that we cannot cross?
Also, would you ever surpass your limits? If money was no object, would you change your genes, take drugs and replace your body parts to be more than human? And if so, what would you change about yourself?

I see there existing three paths to Transhumanism. The mechanical path would be the integration of man and machine. The drug path would be using chemicals to improve the established functions of the human body. The genetic path would replace our actual constraints and redefine our very boundaries.

Spademan wrote:What intrigues/worries me the most is the effects on society it would have. Likely only the wealthy would have access to these modifications expanding the gap between rich and poor even more. Would the modified see themselves as a superior race to the unmodified? Are they correct in saying that?
If the modifications are as visible as an augmented arm would a modified human dare enter an area where unmodified humans live for fear of attack? Am I reading to much into this? These are questions we may not have the answer to for a long time, but might be worth considering. Either way I think it may divide society long before it brings it together. I don't think mechanical enhancements would become popular outside of necessary situations until they could be seamlessly placed in humans. I doubt many people would replace their arm for increased strength when it looks like a crane.
I feel like mechanical enhancements will eventually become middle class forms of enhancement. The ultra rich would probably try to change their genes and try to portray themselves as natural and would probably shun prosthetics as repulsive. Performance enhancing drugs will probably become the most common form of enhancement. No surgery, you just either drink or inject a substance into you either periodically or constantly through a patch or an apparatus. I suspect performance enhancing drugs will be most commonly used by the poor.

Never have I felt more human and more content with life. Everything was broken down and seemed to make sense, I was content to be on this earth for once.
If you want to feel superhuman for a few hours without considering robotising yourself , drugs are the way to go! I wouldn't want to be transhuman to feel better. I would want to be transhuman to actually be better.
