A short video to set the mood of this post.
Transhumanism is a movement to better the human condition. The human condition is what makes us human: our physical limits, mental limits and even our emotional constraints. They make us who we are and as a species we strive to surpass them everyday. We do it everyday through technology. Glasses, implants, drugs and even shoes have all been designed to help us surpass our current limits. Though, right now it is only acceptable to use technology to increase our abilities in areas where some of us(glasses), or in the case of clothing, all of us are deficient.
Though, we are in the process of biomedical revolution. Deaf people are hearing for the first time. This seems impossible though it's happening. People are seeing for the first time.
Though, right we are trying to fix deficiencies. We are only trying to shift disabled people up to the average limit of humans. Soon, we will come to the point where we will be able to go further than the current human condition.
What about the day when we will be able to increase vision to 20/2 instead of only reaching 20/20? What about the day we can take drugs to keep us awake for five days without any drawbacks? What about the day we can change the genes of humans before they are born? What about the day we can replace your arms so you can lift a sedan single handed? What about the day we can replace anyone's legs to make them faster than Usain Bolt?
This isn't science fiction anymore. These things are happening, and soon. The question is how will we as race react? Do we embrace surpassing human limits or do we shun it?
My questions are:
Is it ethical for us to better the human condition through body modification? And if it is, is there a limit? Is there a line that we cannot cross?
Also, would you ever surpass your limits? If money was no object, would you change your genes, take drugs and replace your body parts to be more than human? And if so, what would you change about yourself?
Put your flags up in the sky.
And wave them side to side.
Show the world where you're from.
Show the world we are one.

- Yes, sign me up! First, I would get my digestive tract to work properly, perhaps even make it to only take up energy from blood cells when food needs to be digested. Afterwards, I would begin augmenting my eyesight (average) and hearing (Above Average as of current). Make my body filter the water I drink. taking the salt and such out and making you sip that out. This would effectively allow me to drink any water anywhere. Great for survival if needed.
Basically, I would do a good bit to correct biological errors.
Very good post, Aztec, I would recommend you stay here and not poke into the IGS.

Personally, I have no problem with going pretty much all the way, but it's a hell of a moral tangle.
To me, the main concern is maintaining continuity of consciousness. Other than that I have very few objections to even complete changes.

I see there existing three paths to Transhumanism. The mechanical path would be the integration of man and machine. The drug path would be using chemicals to improve the established functions of the human body. The genetic path would replace our actual constraints and redefine our very boundaries.

What intrigues/worries me the most is the effects on society it would have. Likely only the wealthy would have access to these modifications expanding the gap between rich and poor even more. Would the modified see themselves as a superior race to the unmodified? Are they correct in saying that?
If the modifications are as visible as an augmented arm would a modified human dare enter an area where unmodified humans live for fear of attack? Am I reading to much into this? These are questions we may not have the answer to for a long time, but might be worth considering. Either way I think it may divide society long before it brings it together.
What're you looking at me like that for? I'll shank you I will.

I don't think mechanical enhancements would become popular outside of necessary situations until they could be seamlessly placed in humans. I doubt many people would replace their arm for increased strength when it looks like a crane.
I feel like mechanical enhancements will eventually become middle class forms of enhancement. The ultra rich would probably try to change their genes and try to portray themselves as natural and would probably shun prosthetics as repulsive. Performance enhancing drugs will probably become the most common form of enhancement. No surgery, you just either drink or inject a substance into you either periodically or constantly through a patch or an apparatus. I suspect performance enhancing drugs will be most commonly used by the poor.

I'm more or less about full transhumanism. It's almost like a form of evolution though only limited by the capacity of human creativity.

This would be because we would constantly transfer consciousness, retaining ourselves without our bodies.
We could also be placed into robotic bodies to prevent aging, but we would still require occasional repairs.

The question is does that matter?
While consciousness transfer is a very interesting subject with very interesting applications (can I say 3d printed bodies with consciousness transfer for colonisation) I'd still more interested in the development of prothetics/ biological enhancement and the digitisation of the mind or the installation of the human species as infomorphs.

I do not believe in limitations. I feel like people are each allowed to answer the questions on limitations and lines that shouldn't be crossed on their own based by their own personal beliefs. I believe in the freedom of oneself over my own opinions. Although my opinion is still epic.
To answer your questions.. No I do not believe in limits but lines that I would not like to cross are human genetic modification and drug enhancement. In this stage of our development, I believe this is too dangerous and risky. I believe "unforeseen consequences" , may add to our knowledge as it always has but would also be very cruel. This is basically experimentation on humans. I don't care what expert you find or whatever. Our race does not have the knowledge and anything we do is human experimentation.
I do believe in technological improvements. Giving a blindman sight. Prosthetic and robotic limbs. Improvement of life of those with disabilities. Experimentation is inevitable but it does make sense to focus on this demographic. From here we can learn to do more. Could one day prosthetic robot lungs that saved lives of people with lung cancer one day become more efficient and powerful than our normal lungs? Would it be viable for athletes to get mechanical lung transplants to improve their endurance in the game? Will the populations opinion be divided? I believe there will be. Scientists who modify their bodies to better adapt to harsher environments could make sense. Or it could be frowned upon in sports and competitive play.
Discrimination could also exist. Person A. Has breast implants as is allowed to run a race. Person B. has superlungs 9000 and not allowed to run because he can go as fast as he can without running out of breath. 10 years before that super lungs 8000 were not as efficient and were welcomed to empower those with disabilities and not to disclude them. But now with this new update they have become completely op..
tl;dr
I do not believe in limitations and society as a whole will eventually have to decide what lines can or cannot be crossed.
To quickly answer the question on what I would change about myself...
I would like a cyborg eye like geordi la forge in first contact. I want it to have zoom and snapshot features. Maybe email, bluetooth. It will be like I have a computer all the time with the background being real life. I would also like super strength.
One day I am going to be on survivor and I will kick ass.

sometimes i kind of want to die, I wouldn't prolong the inevitable, I'd hate to see my friends, who would have to be poorer, die before me, whilst I love some super-human life, not very super when all your friends are dead now is it?
personally it would give me some kind of closure to die from some disease, at least then I'd know when it happens, I'd be given a rough estimate, I wouldn't get treatment for cancer, just accept it.
giving people a quality of life by enabling them to see is one thing, prolonging the inevitable is another, soon we will have people with different bodies and every single organ transplanted, just to keep them on this miserable, stinking earth! And they will only be greedy people who can only afford the things in the first place through being greedy and only want to stay alive to be greedy! We won't be doing organ transplants out in Africa where kids are dying.
This kind of stuff will only go to the rich, so if you're normal like me, stop dreaming and admit you'll probably die of cancer.
Is that real enough for this thread? |
