Is there anything specifically I should go for? Would any modern wireless work, or would I need to buy a keyboard and mouse specifically for use on the PS3? |

Accidentally brush tap it too far and WHOOPS, SHOOTING THE AIR, NEED TO READJUST BEF- dead. Especially against faster suits. I feel like I'd do better with the precision of a mouse, but it'd balance out because I've never been good with keyboard controls ever, and learning Dust's layout would leave me a really easy target to hit. |

Use the left stick to adjust aim in small amounts.

good luck. I want to ask what an input device would be, but then I also feel like it'd come across like I'm asking because I want to use one, rather than just curious about what it is. |

Oh, that makes sense. My friend tried using a KB/Controller combo, it worked well for him. I heard that some people use a Controller/Mouse combo, but I'm not really sure how that works out.

This. That's the big secret behind KB/M on Dust.
If you try to use the regular KB/M support that is built into Dust you will find that it is terrible. That is why you have regular KB/M users out there asking for it to be fixed while others magically have the ability to destroy everything with it.
Something like this.
The true try hards will even combine this with a keyboard that has custom macros to allow them to build strafe patterns that make them untouchable with a single key stroke.
I think you are jumping on this band wagon a little late since this is one of the biggest factors in strafe speed getting nerfed. This is also why I try to explain to people that removing KB/M support from Dust will do absolutely nothing. |

It's mainly the use of the mouse I'm after, though, so that I can actually stay on target more easily. Is the mouse any good at all without added support from stuff like this? |

I can probably give this a try, though. How does a mouse work alongside a controller? Does it take away the use of the right thumbstick entirely, does it only come into play when I actually move the mouse to aim and give back right thumb control when I give it a tap, or what? |

It's been a while since I've heard any serious discussion about KB/M, but from what I remember there was talks about acceleration limits when moving the mouse to aim. Something about a gradual increase to the momentum of turning the aiming reticle, as well as a cap on the overall speed of moving the aiming reticle.
So basically it was nothing like say Unreal or Quake or normal PC FPSs. From what I remember hearing, the KB/M was extremely difficult for most to get acclimated with, but those that could get used to it had a massive advantage in terms of precision.
Some pretty heated arguments went down on whether Dust should allow KB/M support back in my prime. Lots of hate on both sides. Fun stuff. |

I want to say that both KB/M and DS3 remain active, letting you pick your method of control on the fly, with no menu crawling. You could be using your DS3 and simply put it down and start using the KB/M, but I've personally never used a KB/M, and it's been so long since I took part in the control method discussions, I don't remember and I'm unsure of how exactly it works.
I want to say I do remember people saying they would use the DS3 for things like flying a DS, then picking up the KB/M for ground combat.

Yes both can be used at the same time. Before they messed up the mouse input I use to snipe with my left hand on the controller for zooming and adjusting where I stand while using the mouse in my right hand for aiming and firing. |

Ive talked to maybe 6 or 7 Dust players that is the Spiltfish mouse / nunchuck with very good success.

LOL, no one answered the ops original question.
Yes, regular USB PC HIDs (human interface devices) work instantly on PS3. Even 10 buck keyboards and mice.
However, CCPs abovementioned artificially implemented limitations lessen the mouse usability a lot. This can be mostly, but not entirely, negated by a mouse with adjustable acceleration+speed or DPI.
Any device which camouflages (eagle eye etc) the MKB input into pad (controller) input has a HUGE potential for winner's choice. Reader's can figure the reason by reading further...
The Barracuda "mouse+nuchuck" item seems nice but in reality is terrible, at least I couldn't set it up so.
Now some important comments:
- Controller inputs have AA (Auto Ai... Erm, Aim Assist). - Any mouse input apparently disables AA for some time period so mouse users have no AA. - Chances are keyboard inputs won't disable AA but I'm not sure
- 360' scannerina scans are still possible on adjustable mice - Some things are utterly undoable/unplayable on MKB: Dropships, choosing your spawn location on map screen(!) etc
- Dust accepts all HIDs simultaneously so going hybrid is possible. However there might be a slight pause in changing from mouse to pad. - Hybrid controls are viable in some cases. However, it may be that some button functions become hard to reach, depending if you use pad+mouse or keyboard+pad.
- Chances are accomodating to dust MKB takes a lot of effort and any persons kdr will drop during that time, a lot.
As a rough generalisation, controller has advantage over MKB. Reasons in the followin posts.

My Background: - First six months of dust I played with pad (DS3) until Autumn 2012 when MKB came along. - After that I did full MKB, then 50-50 hybrid, and finally hybrid which is mostly MKB (80%). - On Autumn 2013 the Aim Assist (AA) was introduced.
Some personal experiences: (may vary from person to other that means!) * Before AA: I'd say that as a MKB user I had slight advantage over pad users * After AA: I am at serious disadvantage and short to mid ranges, while retaining some advantages elsewhere (look previous post) * AA is very strong, especially with semi-auto weapons as they seem to calculate hits differently

Chart on which one is better in Dust 514:
DS3 (pad, controller) >>> Mouse+keyboard
- Combat at ranges: very short to mid range (2m to 20m which is 4 to 40 Dust in game meters)
- Dropship controls
- Map control (especially choosing where you want to spawn)
Mouse+keyboard >>> DS3 (pad, controller)
- Combat at ranges: Mid long and over ( over 25m which is over 50 dust in game meters)
- Sniping and forge gunning
- Tanking, especially missile and rail
Balanced or no clear advantage for either:
- Real CQC meaning knifing distance or the length of the barrel (1m)
- LAV controls
- Small turrets: both have annoying weaknesses

KB/M is definitely not optimized on Dust.
UI navigation is a nightmare, and the controls are pretty ******. Can't customize them either.

The correct procedure for using a Mouse is as follows:
Step 1: purchase a wired mouse t minimize input lag. Step 2: Connect wired mouse to the PS3. Step 3: Take connected PS3 and shoot it repeatedly with whatever firearm is handy. This is to save the time and frustration of having to discover why you were going to shoot the goddamn thing to begin with. Best to get it over with.

Tried out the mouse for a bit, and I was incredibly wrong. The mouse doesn't seem to be better for aiming at all, at least not for me. Slight movements seem to cause jitter, and moving the mouse diagonally, slowly, up and to the right will, instead of smoothly going diagonally up and to the right, will cause you to go mostly diagonal, with occasional slight 'twitches' in one direction or another.
Maybe the surface I was using wasn't flat enough (that old plastic Mario Paint mousepad) or maybe the mouse I'm using isn't too great (some logitech thing that came included with a keyboard, cost maybe $40). Or maybe I'm just not used to it and need to give it another shot.
But that was not a fun experience. |
