What are the chances we could ever get SKINs of the default suits? Say, for example, I really like the look of the Advanced Amarr Sentinel, but I don't like the Proto look. Would it be possible for us to be able to buy 'basic' SKINs like these? |

Problem with SKIN is that we loose 'tier' infromation on battlefield. Now everyting can look as different dropsuit.
We need 'clear' visualization of used meta items/dropsuit. So no more proto dropsuit as basic look.
When we will use power-core mechanics we can add dropsuit look, just color tone change or additional icon on chest - like Iron Men power core graduation ;)

This may go hand in hand with a tiericide, and instead of special advanced suits, you get an advanced powercore and a SKIN (most likely ISK purchased BPO)
this is if and maybe of course.

Well, we're likely going to lose that visualization with Power Cores as well since the idea is to reduce the amount of total suits available as a whole - I'd imagine that'd include differentials between the tiers (Standard/Advanced looking different than Prototype). I think that, even if we were to offer up those things through an ISK BPO sort of deal like Rattati said, it'd still be up to player choice as to whether or not they really want to add that in and then we have to consider that they may be under no obligation to attach said Prototype SKIN onto a suit that has a Prototype Power Core.
In fact, it might make things really entertaining as people put Prototype SKINs on suits that have like militia/standard Power Cores
EDIT: Best bet, I feel, is to have accurate information displayed in the TacNET read-out in the bottom right whenever you're looking at a target. In an almost ironic twist it seems that even brightly colored BPOs become the best 'camo' because you're masking what tier of suit you're wearing, as opposed to trying to blend into the environment, which can make the enemy have sub-par decision making when trying to decide whether to engage you.

I think the OP's point was a visual distinction (on the battlefield) of the tier of the suite. With the SKIN system (which I love) we have sadly lost this information.
Would the following be possible in the future? - SKIN properties takes preference for the entire suite apart from the eyes. - Power core affect CPU / PG (as currently designed), but does also affect the "SKIN" properties of the eyes.
This would mean we have a visual clue about the tier of the enemy suite before it shoot us in the face. Eyes can retain the same colours as today, I.e Red for Proto.
In addition, I would like the text on the kill feed to indicate SKIN used, PowerCore and Suite Class. Right now we only see the suite name, irrespective of the SKIN used. |

Honestly, that might be a circumstance of emergent gameplay in and of itself - players using SKINs to mask the their of their suit because of that visual distinction. Personal preference, I honestly think that a player should be afraid of their given counter (if you're running a Caldari Assault and you chance upon an Amarr Commando/Assault, for instance) rather than a certain tier of suit. I see what you're saying though, I'm just mixed about it. On the one hand I can totally understand and get behind retaining visual distinction but on the other hand I think the tactical variation makes a lot more sense in a logical perspective.
That and I never understood why we'd have bright colors and visual identifiers between suit roles on the battlefield in the first place x3

I'm really not sure what you mean by this.
You still need tiers / meta items and powercores with this idea, which also requires the EXACT SAME sp investment as it does now.
Nothing changes between this idea and now, except for adding in ISK skins for all the current 'default' skins of regular suits, and there is even talk of making sure that those skins are only 'accessible' with the required skills. (So no proto assault skin without assault to 5 for that race) So the pride factor is still there for the SP investment.

The power/learning curve in DUST is entirely too steep for fun play when you are new.
Not only do current veterans enjoy clearly superior equipment, but the skills they invest to GET TO said equipment boost their power further. Slot flattening addresses this by making sure that New players can at least approach SOME of the power of a proto player.
Even in STD suits, any focused, 20m or more SP player by and large will faceroll across dozens of new players before feeling significantly threatened, especially if those new players do not fully understand fitting, weapon profiles, etc.
What happens when you have some poor newbie in his militia minmatar frame with his shiny new militia CR and he encounters me, in my purple Caldari sentinel with three damage mods hot-racked on my shiny MO-4 Assault HMG?
What happens to this proud newbie when he encounters my Prototype Amsent/Minsent/Calsent/Galsent with a boundless HMG, or a Six-kin burst, or a freedom AHMG?
What happens if he encounters me and my maxed cores in my shiny Renegade APEX suit with an ADV ACR or EXO-5 Mass driver racked with damage mods?
Oh right, in all cases get his ass torn open unless he's a GENIUS.
Because that's fun, right?

The powercore idea fixes that, to a degree, by flattening out the progression curve between suits.
The person I was responding to, as I understood it, was seemingly complaining that the idea stripped all progression out of the game, and made SP worthless. Both of which are false.
I am well aware that the powercore idea is going to make the game a little (hopefully alot) more fair, as each suit level will have the same module slots, thus allowing a smaller gap between new players and vets, while also still making progression have an impact on the game.

for people who want to see whether someone is proto, suit coloration isnt needed. all that is needed is to use the targeting system in-game, which tells not only what tier an opponent is, but also their hp and how effective your weapon is at their current range and hp level.
if youre too close to use targeting, youre too close to care whether the opponent is proto
