I've fitted a Python with a small blaster turret. (Only the basic, but basic level equipment should still be viable anyways)
I'm half decent at ADS, and I managed to get a dozen or so assists, zero kills over running Dom for a few hours.
Final verdict: Better than it used to be, but not really viable as a DS primary weapon, at least not when compared to missiles.
I feel the dispersion should be tightened considerably, the reticle should be roughly half the size it is. It might then be a viable alternative to missiles as an anti-infantry weapon.
!--CCP, let's push for the license of Dust on both current Gen consoles--!

Totally agree. It doesn't need to have inverse dispersion either. It needs to be generally more accurate, without having to risk overheat before getting a vaguely viable dispersion.
This isn't just about dropships. Yes you can kill people with it when mounted on a tank, but it's not very good. Your better off getting out and using a rifle.
To use a tank mounted small blaster you have to both use the additional asset risk of a tank, and use teamwork. Both of which should be rewarded. The small blaster should be the most feared anti infantry weapon in the game. As it stands it's a joke.
If a tanker wants to slaughter infantry, they bring out a large blaster. This is wrong. They should be focussing on getting gunners to devestate people with their small blaster.

Small blasters really don't work on an ADS. By the time it becomes remotely accurate, all the enemies have gone behind cover. It's even an issue on LAV's and tanks.
Could we also get a sharpshooter skill for blasters?
We want cake and tea.

In my opinion, the biggest obstacle for the small blasters to be viable is hit detection.
Currently we have major hit detection issues, and the weapons without aim assist suffer the most. Aim assist helps cover up a lot of hit detection issues.
I propose that the Small Blaster gain a certain amount (however light CCP feels is good to start with) of aim assist. The purposes here being to eliminate much of the blue flare-no damage scenarios.
The weapon is -absolutely lethal- when you hit someone with it. Mounted as the side gun of an incubus, it can melt a heavy in 1.3 seconds. The problem is if the ship is moving -the slightest little bit-, or the target is strafing left and right, hit detection will prevent most of the shots from working.
Know what cannot be known.

I would also, eventually, like to see the small blasters reworked into this:
