So, no surprise, after getting out of Recruit games and being thrown into the general public, I am getting ripped apart by the better geared, more skilled players in Public Contracts, especially the clanned players. I'm assuming this is normal for Dust 514, and that the game takes some settling into and has a learning curve to it. I got my ass kicked quite a bit when I started playing TF2.
But I've learned a few things starting out.
-Don't go alone. Spawn somewhere that has teammates nearby and STAY WITH THEM. Roaming solo is just asking to be killed.
-Don't engage 1v1. I'm not sure how big of a difference the higher gear makes, but with my starter gear I feel like I have absolutely ZERO CHANCE of surviving direct confrontation, so it's better to stay back and support teammates, and scrounge whatever WP you can.
-Since I'm so bad at direct fights (possibly only because of starter gear and I'm not willing to spending ISK on better gear until I know I'm skilled enough to not lose money every match because of redeployment), I stopped trying to engage enemies and instead took up a support role, healing and reviving downed teammates with the Repair Tool and Nanite Injector whenever possible. In doing this I actually started being a lot more productive to my team, keeping important players alive, using fewer of my teams precious clones because of fewer deaths, and getting more WP through Triage/Revivals as a bonus.
Because of this, I'm thinking I may want to focus on a support role in the future, healing and watching out for my teammates instead of trying to actually get kills and contribute DPS. So I think, when my funds and my skill permit it, I'm going to try running Logitechs and focus on Rep/Nanite/Hives. Hopefully this doesn't make me too high of a priority for enemy target selection, I'd think they'd be focused on the guys shooting at them rather than the one guy whose just healing people.
Anyway, yeah, the first few hours have been absolutely brutal so far, and I don't expect it to get smoother anytime soon. It feels like getting started in this game is kinda like a crucible of fire sort of thing, and I just have to tough it out until I get more skill and better loot.
But I'm enjoying it, nonetheless. I got my ass kicked at Dark Souls when I first started playing it, and I'm a beast at it now and still love playing it. So it's my hope that if I just stick with this game and ride out the frustration, I'll get better at it and the game will get more fun. |

OK boy let's get you set. You will want to create another character, these are referred as alts, this character you will make all your mistakes. Focus your skills on cores and try to find a weapon you like and get it leveled up. I advise you join DUST University or Immortal Guides. They are the only corps worth a damn at your level.

I WANT to master a shotgun, but from what I've seen so far, the maps are just too damn big and open to play well to any sort of close-range weaponry. I could only use one effectively if I was camping an objective. But so far, the Scrambler Rifle looks pretty good, reminds me of the Covenant Carbine in Halo 2. I have to make a choice I guess though, because from what I hear, Logi's only have ONE weapon slot.
I'll check out the two corps you recommended. |

What hours do you play? I have siblings that are starting fresh characters (they have about 13 mill sp), they are also doing starter fit logis and putting their skill points into sentinels.
Planning your sp skill tree in the beginning is major.

I'm not really sure I spent it right. I got Dropsuit Upgrades 2, Shield, Core, and Armor Upgrades 2, and Weaponry 5.

I swear to god they should have directly marketed this game to darksouls players
Yeah this game is brutal when starting out
Most important thing is working on core skills - they are always useful and translate to every suit Try to get armor , shields to lvl 3 minimum Dropuplink lvl 3 Nanohive lvl 2 (for compact nanohive)
I would not recommend speccing into any suits until you're a little more comfortable with the game - even the top suits are terrible if you dont have your core skills up & the basic suits kinda suck - go directly for the role or don't do bother (assault, scout, sentinel for example)
All of the starter fits can be altered And Abuse the medic fit - great for getting wp and has two equip slots
The militia suits like minmatar heavy and amarr light frame are good to use
The militia weapons like assault combat r, scrambler, assault rail r, laser - can be useful also
And get in a squad - get in a squad - get to the choppah (there's a squad in the choppah) |

Welcome to New Eden as well as Dust.
With a mindset like that, you are setting yourself up for some enjoyment. Everyone here went through the same hell that you went through but toughened up to get good at it. There are some issues with latency and some frame rate hits, but over time you will get use to it and account for it.
Also, if you are concerned about ISK, one alternative to making ISK through battles is by earning it through trade. But keep in mind that you need a minimum Loyalty Rank of 2 (LR2) to be able to send ISK and/or items to someone else. However, you can receive items if someone happens to just want to donate to you. Someone guessed that you need about roughly $10 to buy enough AUR to get to LR2. In the meantime, ambush offers the best reward in terms of ISK per hour.
Boosters will help you gain SP quickly. Remember to save up any officer suits and weapons you get as salvage, take full advantage of the Daily Missions, save up at least 10 keys before opening strongboxes so you can open 10 at once and get a guaranteed rare loot in the process.
Also, one more thing. Once you are able to trade, DO NOT send any items to an Eve Online character as that is bugged and will cause the item to disappear from your inventory. You can submit a petition to CCP to get it back if that ever happens to you.
Petition Here: http://dust514.com/community/support/
I highly advise that you do NOT go into faction warfare matches until you are at least maxed out in your core skills, are proto in one weapon and one suit, and possibly have a mic mainly because FW is Mad Max territory.

You are indeed correct about the better geared/skilled players being the norm This is usually referred to as 'protostomping'
also a quick note 'clans' in Dust are called corporations or simply 'corps' and as stated Dust University is a highly recommended corp for new players
if you have any questions, many vets (myself included) would be happy to help

Wow, this is actually exactly how I started in Dust and exactly where I went, too. Did decent in training, got stomped in Pub, decided to be a support role because if I can't kill the opposition I can at least keep my teammates from giving the reds points.

That's cool man, I appreciate it, but I don't really need handouts. I've never liked getting freebies from people, just makes me feel like a thief.
I seem to be doing a little better though, now that I'm staying with people and not engaging in firefights unless it's to assist someone else. I'm not dying quite as often, and that can only be a good thing for my team. I'm gonna apply to DUST University so I can get some pointers from more experienced players.
I've saved up almost 2 million ISK. I might start buying some basic militia gear soon, at least some scrambler rifles. I can get kills with the Starter Medic's rifle if I have an opportunity, but it's usually bad if the target returns fire. In the meantime, I'll save my SP now for Shield/Armor and Nanohives. |

IDK how well you're going to fit in here, you're being logical lol Yeah Dust doesn't have a learning 'curve' so much as a cliff, chances are right now 1v1 you'll just get your ass handed to you but if you enjoy running logi all the power to you, a good logi is a major asset. feel free to shoot me a mssg in game if you wanna squad up, it's nice to get new blood in the game.
My new blood is painting the dirt as I speak.
When should I start spending ISK on militia gear? I don't want to start spending 10k per deployment until I know I can break even on the K/D ratio or at least not lose money every match. |

Join D Uni, look Kaze up & have him show you the tips to being a good logi. Once you build up some SP and decide what you want to be when you grow up, you can specialize, but for now, resist the urge to spend SP anywhere but in core upgrades.
You sound like you have your head in the right place to succeed. Just keep at it and don't become frustrated if it takes you a while to catch on -- many people playing this game have an immense amount more map/game knowledge and SP than you do and this tilts the board in their direction. One way to tilt it back is to play with a good squad, but, ultimately, there is no substitute for time spent in-game. |

Only spend ISK on militia gear to get to know the weapon. Play around a bit, and if you find one you like spend one skill point for the weapon of choice, and buy Standard gear (STD) instead.
Militia is harder to fit (consume more CPU and PG) and have worse stats and performance.
Other than that, I echo the other posts that dropsuite core skills are where you want to place the majority of your skill points in the beginning. But don't take anything past level 3 (initially), as you get diminishing return for a shitload of SP. it's not worth it... |

You seem to have the right idea. Same conclusions I came to when I started playing in closed beta.
If you're a solo player, I highly recommend becoming a scout as soon as you feel comfortable with all the maps. Scouting is all about hacking stuff before anyone knows what's going on, as well as killing stragglers. Very viable play style, but you need to know the maps like the back of your hand, as well as the 3 common travel routes- where vehicles tend to go, where frontliners tend to go, and where scouts tend to go. It took me a few months to get it down, but there were only 3 maps to learn back then.
Just know that if you don't have a squad to run with, being a support player can be extremely frustrating. You're bound to your teammates, and if they're idiots, which they often are, you're doomed.

Forgot to mention: you'll probably salvage some premade fittings. I've been getting a lot in the past few days. The ones I'm seeing the most of are "Frontline Special Issue" and "Defender Special Issue" suits. While most premade fits are terrible, these are actually pretty sound fits, and they don't have any skill requirements. Don't be afraid to use them, as they're free.
I no longer have any SP invested in heavies or their weapons, yet Defender Special Issue fits have worked very well for me.
