Funny little piece of technology...
So when I play, for example, Gran Turismo 6, my PS3 gets as hot as it does when playing Dust 514, except the emergency overheat fan doesn't turn on. Why?
I found out that it gets hotter in the merc quarters and during battle, which makes it start the loud cooling process...
I don't know why, I don't know how, but I have a sneaking suspicion, that the cause, is in fact, Unreal Engine 3. |

Dust is the only game that takes it to stage 3
which , oddly enough , does happen most when loading or sitting in merc quarters.. not in battle as would be expected |

Since i have the 250gb slim ps3 ill do is open up a Window and vertical stand. This may help out if you have a slim ps3

I think some does "happen" in merc quarters perhaps a memory leak, a process that just takes more and more memory , if I play for a few hours it will definitely crash unless I occasionally quit dust and restart |

That's because that one has low quality hardware and no fans to speak of. Compare the first gen ps3 and the super slim ps3 in.. say.. dark souls side by side and you can see the incredible difference in framerate. The first gen taking the clear lead.

My guess is that Gran Turismo for example is optimized to run more heavily from memory thus reducing cycles on the hard drive while Dust seems to be cycling the hard drive non stop.
I have come to this conclusion based on the performance increase I saw from switching to a SSD as well as the fact that since switching to a SSD I have not reached hoover vacuum levels on fan speed.
I feel like this reduction in heat build up from the HDD within the compact environment is actually the cause for some of the performance increase from a SSD.
TL;DR Dust seems to spin up the HDD far more often than other games which have been optimized to cache more stuff to memory. |

Get some old roller skate/skateboard wheels to set it on if you have it horizontal and keep a can of compressed air. When the fans go into overdrive blow off all the vents, mainly the ones on the side under the lip.
Mine usually turns off the turbo fans a few minutes later. The wheels keep if off whatever you have it on and allows air to move around it easier.
CCP doesn't have the experience of the first party developers to optimize the game as well as they do and I would say that DUST is doing more things than a GT game, not sure about that but It is constantly talking to the server.

That game was so brutal on my old ps3 fat that I had to have a pedestal fan directing cool air directly to the nose of the console. It was harsher than gt6 and/or dust could ever dream to be.

Optimization of code. EVE ran well on people's PCs, but when the captain's quarters got added it was so bloated it caused graphics cards to fry.

I played GT5 until GT6 came out. The online support for GT5 was shut down in July last year I think, so there's no point to play it unless you're playing career mode. I didn't have any problems with it. |

I just keep a fan on mine, I clean it every couple months but when I do, there is barely really any build up. It only does it with certain games. Dust and GTA 5 on random occasions. Soon as I let the fan nearby get some cool air on it, it goes quiet again. I have heard though of some people having issues with the heat sensor. It will sometimes cause the PS3 to give a false overheat, which causes the system to become very loud.
I don't always win 1v1, but when I don't...I cry for nerfs. Stay nerfing my friends.

When my fans turn on high I know it's time to clean the vents. They slow down shortly after.

Usually most stores that have a department with electronics will have them. I picked up a two pack at Office Depot, doesn't cost much and they are useful. Cats hate them!

All you have to do is see the job they do on the thermal paste to believe those claims.

Thermal pasting is just one those very inconsistent things. You can always try to do it by the book but its not always up to snuff. Thermal cement (or would it be cermet) though... Gawd I hate that stuff.
