In other words, a basic assault with two equipment slots.

I agree with this, so much. Starter fits are for starters. You may have spec'd into vehicles but you should be able to make a cheap fitting from militia or basic gear. My cheap fittings are under 5k per suit and all basic.
I have militia module BPO's from the beta... so I have some fits that are literally free and one that is 765 isk to run
Militia Gallente Medium
Dren Assault rifle (several bpo variants of this gun)
Toxin SMG
Militia Armor Plates x3
Militia Nanite Injector
Militia Flux Grenade
The suit has a 5 HP/s Armor repair rate so I opted out of a repair module or even ferroscale.
With 693 ehp w/ skills the suit is just used in special cases that I am not out in the open but a heavy isn't working out.
