Nice find Aeon!
This will be a cash-cow for CCP and it's the GOOD kind of money grab, because it has zero effect on gameplay but still offers something people want. It's a damn shame we didn't have this from the get go, both for CCP and the players, but better late than never I suppose.

So now we'll be able to have the same dropsuit(s) we've had for years in a different color, which we'll notice for a total of 3-5min because this game is an FPS?
That sounds very exciting, and creating it was definitely a valuable use of time.

Good find, even though this has been discussed at length before in Feedback forums.
Cosmetic modules came up as an idea a few months ago,
to improve performance, to fix UX around changing colors (does anyone like being only able to use colored STD suits, and create a whole new fitting each time? to simplify authoring on our end, and finally do Navy skins for LP (hell yeah) and more,
If this makes you happy, and you proceed to buy them, then that's great. But don't twist this into something it is not, it was 100% born out of performance improvements brainstorming.
However, the EVE team have been working on their own code for a number of reasons, probably similar to ours, and we borrowed their naming convention, i.e. SKINS and icon, because you know, New Eden

As far as I understood the earlier conversation this isn't, currently, about creating your own suit. It is basically a different way of representing BPOs.
Everyone always points out that there are a lot of different Caldari medium frame variants for example. If I understood correctly Dust currently loads each one as a unique suit. If there are 5 different Caldari medium BPOs running around in a match the system has to uniquely figure out the maths for each of them.
SKINS in Dust would mean that the game only has to hold the Caldari Medium Frame in its memory once and thee a add the relevant SKIN saving memory and adding to performance, frame rates etc.
This is clearly a good thing.
It doesn't mean that the ability for corporations to have their own uniforms couldn't be added later though. This would also be a good thing! |

Honest to god I only post these sort of things as a proof of concept because when it hits the test server it usually means its coming to the live server soon after, hence the excitement. Even if it is a performance feature, I think a lot of people are going to be excited to finally bring a thematic look to their suit without having to constantly spend aurum or sacrifice versatility through power tiers.

That's an eve market window, with the top (small) window displaying a module we will get in the future. This will probably have it's own slot, and allows it to colour your suit with a skin module. There will be skin modules based on Frame type, for example:
Caldari Medium Minmatar Heavy Gallente Light
and so on. So no matter which tier, you will be able to colour your fittings, instead of only having different colours on specific suit.

Mate the idea alone is sound and something people have been talking about for some time. If you manage to even make a 0.01% performance increase from this then its a super bonus in my eyes.
I'm looking forward to the skins, any preliminary pics that you can share?

It is really kind of unclear how this system will work with BPOs. We had a lot of discussion in the thread a while back and they have apparently busy coding away to get the final result of that thread integrated.
I think we are probably a long ways off from being able to actually reskin our suits as the first step will be to strip all of the suits down to blank models and then apply the skin that is suppose to match that suit later on. It seems to be all pretty highly experimental and it is possible that CCP is not even sure what functions will be possible with it.
The thing to be excited about here is the fact that this has the potential to massively free up some RAM on the PS3. This could be the feature that gives us higher frame rates or even give us the ability to expand past 32 people in a match. It is all a bit unclear what benefits will come of it but no matter what this seems to be a massive improvement for Dust.
Seeing this kind of thing actually turns around some of the massive amount skepticism I have gained for CCP over the last couple of years in Dust and the last year in Eve.
