Well two things really.
One were the active armour reppers and 180mm armour plates.
The other was the pride and competitive spirit FW used to have before it became a grinding farmville.
If anything else it would have been the old animations certain things used to have like the AR rounds, Closed Beta Missiles, Explosions, etc.

Logi LAVs and Remote Repair Mods, some of the old map layouts before they filled them with random small sockets, the old Manus Peak (dat blue atmosphere), spider tanks, and the entire team switching to AV to take out a single Marauder. It wouldn't have worked with the current game but when there was 1 "super" tank on the field it was like a sudden raid boss had appeared and everyone wanted to take it down.

In addition to Skirmish 1.0, the old shooting mechanics (before Unreal engine) were smooth and tight. My first impression of the UnReal build was that I felt like I was under water. Every move and turn was sliggish and sloppy. We had these really long range gunfights with full auto ARs, and it was easy because the analog curves were designed for speed and accuracy. I have always despised the UnReal engine, and I'll never understand why they gave up on their in-house engine. Sure it lacked some valuable features, like gravity altered trajectories, but I think they wanted to use a type of "accessibility enhancement" where we are forced into making sluggish and sloppy movements to make it easier for new players.

Could that be reason for how laggy Dust has become?

The engine change made hit detection and rendering horrid and has recieved little to no real drastic changes since. The change was made to simply make the game look pretty, and nothing else.

At first I was gonna say "Nothing, this game has gotten consistently better for me," but then I remembered the way the cloak was before the cloak delay and I got sad. :( Knifing somebody straight from cloak was a great feeling. Using the cloak just feels like ass right now.

I miss the old burst assault rifle with a 7 bullets burst with lower ROF, I didn't have to spam the trigger as hard then.
I miss the old AR scope
I miss the closed beta gigantic maps (but I never played them, I joined in open beta)
I miss small turrets
I miss the old aim down sights aiming reticle representation for the scrambler pistol (before it used iron sights, it had a small zoom but with a dot reticle instead of a hipfire reticle, I never player closed beta, but I believe I would find that thing more reliable than the iron sights of the current scrambler pistol because those iron sights are too big, the weapons iron sights also sometimes hides the head when you aim for the head, this means you are accidentally aim too high, I hate that)
I watched youtube vids of closed beta
I miss the open beta music
I miss that 'new game feeling' (the first day you play)
I miss the days where I would spend a minute in the warbarge before a public contract would start
I miss the days when the team chat channel didn't take a very long time to load
I miss the days when ISK mattered and I was broke because I kept buying things like 600 militia suits and 1000 basic suits. I stopped doing 12 months ago and I have 150 million ISK now (I sold a lot of stuff for 70 million ISK)
I miss the days when mass drivers did more damage to tanks
I miss my imperial commando ako with 2 light weapons and 1 sidearm (but I rarely used it, never needed it)
I miss the days when I didn't know most of the game inside out
I miss the days when I had 0 likes (I was incognito, a cold silent DUST 514 killer)
I miss that day when I married the minmatar six kin SMG then had a affair with the kallatota magsec SMG and asked if I could have both, they were both similar minded, they both accepted me. Then I also adopted officer nova knifes as my only child
